Split/Merge Handling PowerHA Linked Cluster
Policy Setting Split Merge Approach
Manual   Manual steps needed for recovery to continue
Tie Breaker   Tie break Holder side wins
Majority Rule  Greater of N/2 side wins
Else, side that includes node with the smallest node id
wins
Priority  Operator chooses a numerical value such as “largest
serial number”

Manual (operator controlled failover)
 Split/Merge Policies
– Administrator prompts
– Cluster will wait for Admin inputs
– Optional Policy: After N prompts allow auto-
recovery
– Custom action scripts can invoked at the
time of split or merge as well
 Defaults
– Number of prompts (N)=infinite
– Interval between notifications: once in 30
seconds and then increasing in frequency
– Auto-Recovery after N prompts

PowerHA AIX: Resource Optimized High Availability
• PowerHA provides for LPAR resource management during failovers
• Can readjust resources from the free pool
• Can enable CPU and memory as needed using CoD temp for memory
– For on/off CoD, you’ll need to write scripts for now
• Power Enterprise Pools option-both processors and memory are moveable
– Operator initiated via HMC command line or via custom scripts to automate

PowerHA on AIX with DLPAR cost savings example
• PowerHA and AIX are priced per processor core (license only the cores being used in the cluster)
• Taking advantage of the DLPAR technology in the example topology:
– Assume 770 cluster, 7 AIX and 7 PowerHA
– PowerHA price: 5,000/core = $35,000…..75,000 – 35,000 = savings: $40,000
– AIX price: 2145/core + 530/core = 2675/core = $40,125 – $21,400…..savings: $18,725
– Total savings….$58,725
U.S. example actual results may vary by country

 1. Complete IBM Power Systems integrated end to end solutions for HA DR Focus: 24x 7 Application availability through planned or unplanned outage events Deeply integrated extension of host operating system (AIX, IBM i) Developed and supported by the Power Systems engineering development team HA Clustering technology Clustering provides the applications a complete resiliency infrastructure Cluster monitors and manages primary and secondary resources for HADR operations Storage based data resiliency Data resiliency is an extension of the host system storage management architecture Storage volumes are either switchable or mirrored between nodes in the cluster Hardware based replication services for Multi-Site Operations Host Based Replication (geomirroring for IBM i, or GLVM for AIX) Storage Base Replication (Metro Mirror or Global Mirror) Overall solution characteristic Automation, minimal IT operations involvement Data between primary and secondary nodes always in sync always ready for a failover event
 2. These are a couple of examples of PowerHA configurations. To help the IBM I client to grasp onto this concept you talk about the top configuration They have hard time trying to bridge from the remote journaling concept…your showing them…look…the basic building block of a PowerHA cluster does NOT include replication !! You have to try to get them off of the remote journal mind set and over onto the clustering mind set… For the AIX clients. the bottom picture is the idea we want them to consider… (as well the IBM I clients)..although IBM I clients are accustom to the idea of multi-site configurations they are not always grasping the ideas around Metro Mirror and Global Mirror
 3. This is an emerging trend and with the PowerHA V7.1.3 we have addressed the issues of automated failover between sites. You can expect that we will introduce some options that will allow you to conduct DR testing quickly and easily as well. At this stage there is no reason for our clients to be fearful of multi-site clustering..its up an running all over the world !
 4. Self explanatory chart. Basically pointing out the options for mutli-site replication for PowerHA AIX Enterprise Edition
 5. VSF – Veritas Storage Foundation = VVM (veritas volume manager) + VFS (veritas file system) CVM – cluser volume manager which is cluster wide VVM PowerHA Resource Management: IP address, application monitoring, Volumes, File systems, fastconnect, GPFS TSA Resource Management: IP address, application monitoring, TSA RSM – SRM storage resource manager
 6. Stretched Cluster is suitable for short distances (upto 100 kms) where disks can be shared between sites to be used as repository disks. You should always choose a stretch cluster if possible. It can provide three layers of heartbeat redundancy ; Comm, SAN, and repository disk. This virtually eliminates the possibility of a split site event. PowerHA SystemMirror 7.1.3 uses the Cluster Aware AIX (CAA) services to configure, verify and monitor the cluster topology. This is a major reliability improvement because core functions of the cluster services such as topology related services now run in the kernel space. This makes it much less susceptible to be affected by the workload generated in the user space.
 7. 120-300KM equals ~ 74-186miles
 8. Per Storage ATS VDisk Mirroring should extend to 10KM with FC cable & LW SFPs from node at one site to switch at other site.
 9. http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/aix/v6r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.aix.baseadmn/doc/baseadmndita/devpathctrlmodatts.htm The following table displays the optimal settings to use for a HyperSwap configuration. Table 1. HyperSwap configuration settings NameComponentValueDescription dyntrkProtocol driver (fscsi)EnabledProvides transparent I/O recovery if the N_port ID for a device is changed. For example, due to movement of the Fibre Channel from one switch port to another port. This option is handled at the Host Bus Adapter (HBA) level. fc_err_recovProtocol driver (fscsi)fast_failAllows you to detect Fibre Channel problems between the switch and the storage device. hcheck_intervalDisk driver (hdisk)60The time interval when a health check request is sent to the storage device. The default setting is 60 seconds. rw_timeout 30 seconds (default and lowest for ds8k luns) timeout_policy fail_path (default)
 10. Description 1. 3 sites Site1 has 2 AIX nodes(RAC1 and RAC2), 1 DS8K Site2 has 2 AIX nodes(RAC3 and RAC4), 1 DS8K Site3 has one AIX node as NFS server 2. deploy 4 nodes RAC and 4 nodes PowerHA cluster, using Oracle ASM to manager hdisks 3. PowerHA cluster has one user MG, one repository MG, one concurrent RG which including the user MG. The user MG has several disks for database 4. Oracle CRS has 3 vote devics, one is from DS8K-1(marked Vote-1), one is from DS8K-2(marked Vote-2) and one is from NFS server(marked Vote-3) the LUN from DS8K-1 and DS8k-2 don't need to configure PPRC function 5. there is 1 CAA repository disk, configure pprc pair and enable hyperswap function on AIX 6. there are several hdisks for loading Oracle database, configure pprc pairs and enable hyperswap fuction on AIX 7. the luns(act as vote devices, CAA repository disk and loading Oracle data) belong to different LSS
 11. DLPAR and Power Enterprise Pools are a way to significantly reduce the cost of implementing PowerHA clusters. In essence the PowerHA “talks to the HMC which then takes the action to activate the resources on the target, after a planned fallover has occurred the source is collapsed down to the number of cores prior to the role-over. Point is that you need to license all of the target cores on the secondary node. At present you will need either write scripts or work with lab services to automate this with PowerHA. We are looking to add this capability in a future TL.
 12. Similar to the previous example with the CBU on IBM i, this is a case of two 770s and PowerHA using DLPAR. In this case were using one core on each of the secondary nodes thereby saving our clients 8 AIX licenses and and 8 PowerHA licenses. The key to this from a compliance perspective is that at any moment we are using only the number of cores that we are entitled regardless of which of the boxes in the cluster on which we happen to be running.
