THE “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
POVERTY
IN THIS PRESENTATION I HAVE DISCUSSED THE
FOUR REASONS FOR POVERTY ACCORDING TO MY
OWN IDEAS AND BELIEFS.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015,
provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.
At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all
countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and
other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce
inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our
oceans and forests.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by UN
The “Sustainable Development Goals - National Indicator Framework Progress Report, 2020 (version
2.1)” highlights the progress made so far in the journey of SDGs monitoring/achievement at national
level and also identifies the gaps.
NSS – National Sample Survey
The last survey in the series of poverty was conducted in 2009-10 (NSS 66th round), the
NSSO repeated the large scale survey in 2011-12 (NSS 68th round)
NSS Survey On Poverty in INDIA.
based on minimum daily requirement of 2,400 and 2,100 calories for an adult in rural and
urban areas, respectively.
Tendulkar committee stipulated a benchmark daily per capita expenditure of R27 and R33 in
rural and urban areas, respectively, and arrived at a cut-off of about 22% of the population
below poverty line. It sparked of a furious row, as these numbers were considered unrealistic
and too low.
According to common people surviving with an income of around 5000 per month is in itself
a condition of poverty.
How Poverty is defined?
“Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor.
Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear
for the future, living one day at a time.
Poverty has many faces, changing from place to place and across time, and has been described in
many ways. Most often, poverty is a situation people want to escape. So poverty is a call to action --
for the poor and the wealthy alike -- a call to change the world so that many more may have enough to
eat, adequate shelter, access to education and health, protection from violence, and a voice in what
happens in their communities.”
The World Bank Organization describing poverty
1. Inadequacies in childhood
2. Improper dissemination of adolescent power
3. Unemployability and lack of vocation
4. Lack of ethics and value system
Causes of poverty
The first 1,000 days from conception to age two are increasingly
being recognized as critical to the development of neural pathways
that lead to linguistic, cognitive and socio-emotional capacities that
are also predictors of labour market outcomes later in life.
The effects are cumulative and the absence of appropriate childcare
and education in the three to five age range can exacerbate further
the poor outcomes expected for children who suffer from
inadequate nurturing during the critical first 1,000 days.
1.Inadequacies in childhood
Adolescence can be a time of both disorientation and discovery.
The transitional period can raise questions of independence
and identity
The stages of adolescence include early adolescence from age 10
to 14, mid-adolescence from age 15 to 17, and late adolescence
from age 18 to 24.
Breaking from their and childhood attachment security allows
children to acquire freedom and responsibility to develop
independence and to differentiate themselves from their parents
and childhood to establish their own unique identity.
2.Improper dissemination of adolescent power
Many young teenagers may be torn in making career choices at secondary school levels.
Besides when someone likes their career, i.e., are passionate towards it, they tend to do a tremendous
job, this means growth and more profit to the company as well as the individual.
Vocation schools provide a place for those who are unsure of which career path to choose.
Vocational education is training that equips students with practical experience and technical skills in a
specific type of field.
Lack of vocation may lead to unemployability.
Unemployability essentially means that even if there were available jobs, companies wouldn’t hire the
student because he is largely substandard and lack skills worth paying for. Unemployability emerges
from a wide gap between the level of student’s skills and knowledge resulting from his college
education and in the level of what market demands.
3.Unemployability and lack of vocation
The prime learning environment is five to sixteen years' of age. Hence the school hours for
children are the best time for learning and need the best of environment and mission
oriented learning with value system. During this stage, they need value based education in
school and at home for them to become good citizens.
If the child misses the value based education in the school, no government or society can
establish a transparent society or a society with integrity.
- Dr.A.P.J ABDUL KALAM,
FORMER PRESIDENT OF INDIA.
• ADDRESS AT THE VALEDICTORY FUNCTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL
CONFERENCE ON 'HUMAN VALUES AND ETHICS IN THE GLOBAL
SCENARIO’, BANGALORE
There is a serious defect in the school curriculum in the absence of provision for education
in social, moral and spiritual values.
4.Lack of ethics and value system
We have a population of over one billion people of which 260 million are still living below the poverty line. They need education, they
need habitat, they need health care, and creation of employment potential. To meet their needs we have the second vision of
transforming India into a developed nation by the year 2020.
We have identified five areas where India has a core competence for integrated action:
(1) Agriculture and food processing
(2) Reliable and quality electric power and surface transport for all parts of the country.
(3) Education and Healthcare
(4) Information and Communication Technology
(5) Self reliance in critical technologies.
These five areas are closely inter-related and if implemented in a co-ordinated fashion will lead to food, and economic security, and
national security.

FORMER PRESIDENT OF INDIA.
