Alice was feeling tired and bored sitting by her sister on the riverbank with nothing to do. She saw a White Rabbit with pink eyes run by quickly saying "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!" which seemed natural to Alice at the time. However, when the Rabbit took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket, this surprised Alice because she had never seen a rabbit with either of those things before. Curious, Alice chased after the Rabbit and just in time saw it disappear down a large rabbit hole under the hedge.
