Joomla tags have been around since J! 3.1. This presentation discusses:

2. A tag cloud (or word cloud) is one kind of “weighted list”, (e.g.
commonly used on geographic maps to represent the relative size
of cities in terms of relative typeface size).
Tags are usually single words and the importance of each tag is
shown with font size or colour.
The term “tag cloud” as a feature of early Web 2.0 websites and
blogs, used primarily to visualize the frequency distribution of
keyword metadata and as a navigation aid.
Tag clouds are used in social networking websites (e.g. Twitter via
the #hashtag), in ’blogs, in image sites (e.g. Flicker) … and now
you can use them in Joomla!
3. Tags can be used in
• Articles
• Categories
• Featured Articles
• Contacts
• Newsfeeds
• Weblinks
For demonstration purposes, we will look at how tags
work in a simple J! 3.4.1 website using the Protostar
template.
4. From J! 3.1, tags have been included as part
of the core feature set. There is nothing else
to add if you are using Joomla 3.1+.
The tags feature enables you to add a
keyword or words to an item and those
keywords.
Tags can be displayed in a few different
ways.
5. There are a couple of
ways you can add tags
in Joomla:
1. With the Joomla Tag
Manager component
2. Dynamically, on-the-
fly, when you create a
Joomla article (or
article category,
weblink, etc.)
6. Tags can be displayed in a few ways.
Once a tag has been added to an article it will
display automatically under the article title as
shown in the image below:
“recipes” is a tag
7. Tags can also be displayed using the Popular Tags
and Similar Tags modules.
To choose one of the modules go to
Extensions » Module Manager.
• Click the New button and
the following two
modules will be available,
as shown in the image.
8. You also have three options for using tags via menu
links: Tagged items, Compact list of tagged items,
List of all tags.
9. Tags are similar to, but different from, categories. Both
tags and categories are used to organise content.
You can happily use both tags and categories on your
site at the same time.
However, there are two major ways in which tags are
better than categories:
• You can place articles into multiple tags but only one category.
• Tags are a unifying system across your site. You can use the
same tags for all your extensions. With categories, each
extension has its own categories that aren’t shared.

We will conclude with a practical demonstration
In the language of visual design, a tag cloud (or word cloud) is one kind of “weighted list”, as commonly used on geographic maps to represent the relative size of cities in terms of relative typeface size.
Tags are usually single words, and the importance of each tag is shown with font size or colour. This format is useful for quickly perceiving the most prominent terms and for locating a term alphabetically to determine its relative prominence. When used as website navigation aids, the terms are hyperlinked to items associated with the tag.
The specific visual form and common use of the term “tag cloud” rose to prominence in the first decade of the 21st century as a feature of early Web 2.0 websites and blogs, used primarily to visualize the frequency distribution of keyword metadata that describe website content, and as a navigation aid.
Tag clouds are used in social networking websites (e.g. Twitter via the #hashtag), in ’blogs, in image sites (e.g. Flicker) … and now you can use them in Joomla!
Tags can be used in Articles, Categories, Featured Articles, Contacts, Newsfeeds and Weblinks. Extension developers can also incorporate the use of tags so it will be interesting to see how this new tag feature develops in future Joomla! upgrades
Where the tag is displayed depends on the Joomla site template layout that you are using. The demonstration here uses the Protostar template layout. If your tags display in a different location then you will have to modify the layout of your template or you play around with the CSS to reposition the tags elsewhere.
