Starting Out<br />Each team consists of 11 players. One goalie and 10 outfield players.<br />Teams are usually split in formations consisting of defenders, midfielders, and forwards.<br />

Start of Game and During Play<br />At the start of each game or if there is a goal scored, there is a kick-off from the center circle.<br />After kick-off, the ball will be in play until it goes out of bounds or the referee stops play.<br />There are usually two 45-minute halves in a game. This time can vary for different age groups or regions.<br />

No hands, please<br />Even if you know nothing about soccer, you have an idea that you do not use your hands, unless you are the goalie.<br />Hand balls are anything that touches a body part from the finger tips to the shoulder.<br />

Throw-Ins<br />A throw-in is taken when the ball crosses the sideline and leaves the field.<br />Basic rule for a throw-in is to keep both feet on the ground, and throw the ball with both hands over the head.<br />For teaching purposes, we will practice more than once.<br />

Corner Kicks & Goal Kicks<br />A corner kick or goal kick is taken when the ball leaves the field across the end line<br />If the offensive team kicks it out, it is a goal kick; if the defensive team kicks it out, it is a corner kick<br />Goal kick is taken from anywhere inside the penalty box, and the corner kick is taken from the nearest corner<br />Goal Kick<br />Corner Kick<br />

Fouls<br />If it looks like a foul, it probably is!<br />A player can not kick, trip, jump at, charge, strike, push, hold or spit at an opponent.<br />Keep in mind that soccer is a contact sport<br />Bumping or shoulder-to-shoulder while competing for a ball is not a foul, until the arms or elbow come up. <br />Bad <br />Good <br />

Red and Yellow Cards<br />Punishment for fouls committed.<br />Yellow card is almost a warning, you can receive two yellow cards that are equal to a red<br />Red card is ejection, and possible suspension of next game<br />Referee’s can give ‘straight’ red cards if necessary before yellow<br />

10.
Direct or Indirect Kick?<br />It is a direct kick if you can score by directly kicking the ball on goal.<br />Indirect kick has to be touched by two people on the same team before scoring.<br />Both types of kicks are taken after a foul has been committed.<br />Usually, another teammate will stand nearby to ‘quick touch’ it during an indirect kick<br />For a direct kick, a player can shoot directly at the goal<br />
