Biotechnology: Recombinant Vaccine Development Created & Presented by: Brenda & Razina SBI4UO-B Dec 2008
History of Vaccines Thesis/Focus Definitions (Activity) Persona #1 (GEEK): Brenda Persona #2 (HEART): Razina Persona #3 (BEAN COUNTER): Sajeeda Conclusion Overview
Vaccines
Thesis/Focus: ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],RECOMBINANT VACCINES ARE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN CONVENTIONAL VACCINES
Definitions ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Any substance that can stimulate the production of antibodies and combine specifically with them ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],The basic unit of heredity; sequence of nucleotides along a segment of DNA that provides the coded instructions for RNA synthesis Fundamental component of all living things; composed of complex macromolecules that contain hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and/or sulfur in chains of amino acids Actively poisonous & disease-causing
[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],DNA segments that are chromosome independent & capable of replication in a cell (usually bacteria/yeast) Process of producing a cell, cell product, or organism that is genetically identical to the unit or individual from which it was derived Any disease-producing agent, esp. a virus, bacterium, or other microorganism. Any agent or organism that acts as a carrier or transporter for a pathogen Y-shaped protein molecules produced by B cells as a primary immune defence mechanism
PERSONA #1: SCIENCE (GEEK)
Types of Vaccines 1. Live, Attenuated (weakened) Vaccines -Closest to real infection -Strong antibody response (T-cells & B-cells) -Memory cells created -Risk: attenuated microbes may mutate back into virulent form
Types of Vaccines 2. Inactivated (killed) Vaccines -Microbes killed with heat or chemicals - Alert only B-cells -Hormonal Immunity (1 st dose) & Protective reaction (later doses) -Risk: Not as effective; use adjuvants
Types of Vaccines 3. Conjugate Vaccines -Microbes with protective capsule (polysaccharides) HIDE ANTIGENS -Link polysaccharides to antigens/toxoids that an immature immune system can recognize -Usually used in babies
Types of Vaccines 4. Subunit Vaccines -Antigens of microbes to stimulate response -Created in 2 ways 1)Chemically break microbe apart 2) RECOMBINANT TECH.
Types of Vaccines 5. Recombinant Vaccines -Genes from disease-causing microbe inserted into a harmless vector -Inject vector OR purified antigens (as subunit) -E.g. Hepatitis B (Recombivax HB Hepatitis B Vaccine)
RECOMBINANT VACCINES ,[object Object],-Combination of techniques -Reliable and safer -Control type of vector (safety, ease of growth/storage/cost) -Ability to filter/choose antigens -Strong protective immunity response (proteins expressed on vector is close to a pathogen’s native conformation) ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Impact on Scientific Research: DNA VACCINES
FUTURE IMPACT: DNA VACCINES Pros & Cons -Improve recombinant technique -Control type of vector AND reduce virus contamination -Strong AND long-lasting protective immunity to virus ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object],Persona belief: Recombinant vaccines are effective and have many advantages with its uses
Social & Moral (Heart) ,[object Object],[object Object]
How Do Recombinant Vaccines Affect Society? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Does it benefit the public? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Is it Ethical? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Is it Ethical? (Cont’d) ,[object Object],[object Object]

Does it Interfere With Religious Beliefs?
