RAJIV GADHI INTERNATIOAL
AIRPORT
UPPER CLASS
1. Airports, are used by people, who
want to reach or arrive at their
destination without wasting too
much time in travelling.
2. The whole process, of arriving at
the airport, till one gets out of it, is
extremely smooth. It totally
eliminates the possibilty of carrying
heavy baggage everywhere, or of
waiting for long periods becoming a
problem.
3. The experience and the
environment which an airport
provides, is extremely user friendly,
and comfortable for the people who
travel by it.
4. Many people, love airports, only
for the feel of it. The end number of
duty free options, or just watching
people, and flights take off, and land
is an experience in itself.
UNDERSTANDING THE
ERGONOMICS OF AN
AIRPORT
1. LIGHTING : the lighting inside the
airport, plays a very important role,
in designing the airport space. The
lighting should be comfortable and
calm, easing the burden of waiting,
especially in the case of delays.
at the check-in counters, better
lighting, can keep the passengers, calm
and collected.
At the baggage claim area, Waiting to
be reunited with your baggage after a
flight can be an anxious time for
passengers., thus A natural lighting
solution that mimics daylight will
enhance guidance
LED lighting at entrances, murals or
sculptures play a major role, and makes
it a prominent landmark.
2. SOUND : the sounds, that one
gets to hear, at an airport, are
mostly of announcements about
the incoming and outgoing flights.
The announcements are loud, and
extremely clear to grab the
attention of the passangers.
3. COLORS : The colors used on
an airport, consists, of mostly
whites, and neutral colors, but
signages, add the extra element
to an airport. .illuminated signs,
enhance the readability of the
signage.
High contrast in signages, has a
good readibility from a distance.
4. TARGET CUSTOMERS : It is
usually preferred by people
belonging to the upper class since
travelling by flights involves a lot
of cost.
FUTURE OF DÉCOR PRODUCTS
1. Automated check in : passengers, are opting for online check in, or self service .
Thus in the future passengers might be given a biometric, which will store their
passport, and ticket details for a temporary time in the smartphone.
2. Bag collection : the bags, will have chips infused in them, which will alert the
passengers, about when to collect the baggage, and from which belt.
3. Body scanners : these scanners can get into the depth of a person’s behaviour,
slight change or suspiscion in behaviour may help in arresting criminals. This in turn
also eliminates of the passengers going through this tedious process.
FUTURE OF SPACE AT THE AIRPORT
1. Terminals : the terminals gates as compared to the lobbies, are way smaller in size. Thus the architecture of
the terminals need to change as people spend most of their time there, and more money should be put into
it for its development.
2. Green spaces : airports are moving towards having dedicated green spaces, rather than only luxury
shopping, as an aspect which attracts the media, and makes it unique.

TEA STALL
Lower class
SPACE DIVISION:
It was located on a street with very small space.
• It had space for only one person to stand and make
tea for customers.
• It has a small stall made with steel body.
• It has shelter made of plastic sheet supported by
Bamboo sticks. It was made to keep the stall safe from
Rain and sun.
• There was a small place for people to sit, behind the
stall.
• People usually stand in front of the stall and have tea or
some sit where ever they find place to sit.
• Near the stall there is small space kept to keep the glasses and other
Useful things used by the owner.
• Light: There was only one tube light in the stall. Street light
helped in making the place little bright.
• Sound : Since it is on a street, traffic commotion is disturbing.
• Hygiene is not maintained, since no dustbin is kept.
• Since they serve the tea in a glass, there was a small space where
they wash all the glasses.
• A stove is also present to make tea.
PRIVATE SPACE
MIDDLE CLASS : DOSTEA
INTRODUCTION
1. Reasonable prices, as target
customers are usually middle class
people
2. Good variety of snacks and
beverages
3. Good quality
4. Time effective
5. Not enough payment options.
LIGHTING
1.the place is well lit, as far as
the interiors of the space is
considered. It has a total of 3
tube lights, which are sufficient
for the customers, to order, and
the employees to serve them.
2. It also consists of 3 ceiling
lights, on the outside which
provides light to the people
standing at the tables placed
outside.
3. The banner of the café, is not
at all lit up, which is a cause of
concern as people cannot
clearly identify the place.
4. Lighting inside the café,
exists for fulfillling only one
sole purpose, and does not
actually add an extra element
to the feel of the café.
SPACE
The space element at this café
is extremely small, with just
enough space to place an
order at the counter, and wait
on the outside till the order
arrives.
There is no seating
arrangement , and consists of
only 2 round, tall tables, for
people to keep their tea cups
on.
The space, does not invite,
people to sit, for long hours.
People spend only 10-15
minutes here, and come for
short breaks only.
COLOR
The entire café has only one color, that
is yellow.
Right from the logo, to the paper cups
and the walls, everything is in the same
shade of yellow.
One of the reasons of keeping the color
yellow, might be that of depicting the
color of hunger and that of friendship
and happiness.
This perfectly justifies their name as
well.
FUTURE OF DÉCOR PRODUCTS
• 1. A vending machine , to give tea and coffee, could be used. This would in turn save time, of the people
waiting for their tea or coffee to be made.
• 2. The color of the interiors, is very monotonous and bright, hence a color or two, may justify the funky
name as well.
• 3. A dedicated space to keep the tables, is a necessity since it kind of blocks the entrance to the café.
• 4. Hygiene could be improved, by keeping the dustbins, faraway from the table area.
Starbucks Coffee
Private Space Upper
Class
THE SPACE
There is just enough space for you to
walk through to your table, to sit. There
is not much free space, there is only so
much space for you to move from the
counter to your seat. That suggests a bit
about how it is a place for you to sit,
talk or work; much like any other café.
But the overall “feel” of it is much
different. The wall textures, the
drawings, the wooden furniture, the
lamps, the lights etc, are the game
changers.
For example, Café Coffee Day. People
choose Starbucks over CCD for reasons
like 1. the lighting 2. the ambience and
3. the products.
The counter is rather crowded with
options that never fail to capture our
eye. We are tempted to check out
everything that’s kept on the desk. With
the tones of brown mostly, all the
objects are quite interesting to possess.
But the truth is that they don’t add up
to your life much, except for the fact
that they’re from Starbucks – but that is
exactly what they want as well.
The cold coffees are named very
exotically, the food reminds us of the US
– tempting us to adapt to their popular
choices in food.
There is a 100 kinds of drinkables, which
are different coloured so they might
taste deliciously different as well.
It is also placed high, above the usual
height that we get to see in Indian cafes.
It enables us to look at the menu placed
at the top of the counter. We’re given an
option to enrol for a membership, which
gives us a membership card to pay
through each time we come, instead of
using money. The cups are of different
sizes; Tall, Grande, Venti and Trenta. The
smallest cup size is called Tall, ironically.
There are packaged Frappuccino's
available, as ready to drink products – for
people who may be preferring something
quick.
LIGHTING
The space is lit in a very balanced way.
There as many shadows observed as
there are lights. The lighting is done in
such a way that there is enough
shadows, so that there is a certain
ambience created.
Due to this, when people sit under this
lighting, the light falls on the object/
person in a very interesting way - that
adds up to the “lavish” element of the
café.
Such kind of lighting usually helps hide
any flaw. Such bright, yet soothing lights
help you ignore certain flaws. For
example, compare the pictures taken in
here with another from any other café,
we notice that the light is much better
in Starbucks, it betters the look and feel.
AMBIENCE
The entire café has only two colours
that we can see, brown and green.
Green is the colour of the logo and it
seen here and there but the colour
brown is pretty much everywhere. The
walls, the counter, the paintings, the
furniture. Every element has an
undertone of brown. That makes us feel
like the environment is highly planned
and organised, adding up to the
speciality element.
The sound in the environment is quite
calm, and adds to the social aspect of
the café. There are usually songs played,
that uplift the spirit of the people sitting
in there.
In cafés like CCD, there is a simpler
approach to the décor. The furniture
and walls do add up to the ambience
but there is a lack of harmony in the
place, which we get to see in cafés like
Starbucks. The credit goes to the walls
and the furniture – the browns,
basically. There is a unity between all
the elements, not only due to the
colour but also because of the way
they’re arranged.
THE FUTURE OF DÉCOR IN STARBUCKS
The future of it, we can say, could be glass. Since the only material that screams “elite”, more than wood, is
glass. The furniture is well placed around the corners and is made of solid wood. But in the future, there could
be furniture that is made of glass, instead of wood. Starbucks sticks to its element of lavishness, which makes it
stand different from all other cafes. As soon as you get in, you are a person who demands a fancy hot coffee to
sip while you read a book. It is an experience which leaves you feeling elite. So while their motto seems to be
that, as the materials get advanced, the set up is only going to get better and fancier. There could be glass
tables, brown tinted or more so, the wood may stay the same. The set up being very simple yet striking, there
might not be any drastic changes in their décor. Chances are that their organic yet lavish décor will pertain.

Stove rack : 9ft(length)
Sink space : 1ft
Space between shelf and stove rack : 4ft
Distance between shelf and entrance : 3ft
ERGONOMIC FACTORS ( CHANGES MADE )
• There were 3 shelves to store items. To a hassle free work station, we have changed it to an L shaped single
shelf, that has 3 levels in it.
• As customers come to the counter, there are 2 huge containers of tea and coffee. There is a huge risk of
them falling or hurting a customer, so we have placed them in the counter behind.
• The display rack was rectangular in shape, but we have changed it to a curve in the front, so make it more
comfortable and accessible, giving a wider space above.
• We have given the tea shop a wallpaper with an apt logo, that adds to the space and attracts like minded
crowd. The yellow makes the space look wider and brighter.
• There were no chairs in the shop. But we have included foldable chairs, that are fixed to the walls. They
provide seating for a short period of time (15-20 mins) that allows the customer to have a comfortable
experience for as long as they choose to stay. Since the space is meant for the customer to spend only about
25 mins at max, the seating gives limited comfort, to serve the purpose of sitting and nothing more. This also
helps in creating less chaos and clutter in the shop as there is moment, with the customers coming in and
going out, not settling there for long.

  • 20. RAJIV GADHI INTERNATIOAL AIRPORT UPPER CLASS 1. Airports, are used by people, who want to reach or arrive at their destination without wasting too much time in travelling. 2. The whole process, of arriving at the airport, till one gets out of it, is extremely smooth. It totally eliminates the possibilty of carrying heavy baggage everywhere, or of waiting for long periods becoming a problem. 3. The experience and the environment which an airport provides, is extremely user friendly, and comfortable for the people who travel by it. 4. Many people, love airports, only for the feel of it. The end number of duty free options, or just watching people, and flights take off, and land is an experience in itself.
  • 21. UNDERSTANDING THE ERGONOMICS OF AN AIRPORT 1. LIGHTING : the lighting inside the airport, plays a very important role, in designing the airport space. The lighting should be comfortable and calm, easing the burden of waiting, especially in the case of delays. at the check-in counters, better lighting, can keep the passengers, calm and collected. At the baggage claim area, Waiting to be reunited with your baggage after a flight can be an anxious time for passengers., thus A natural lighting solution that mimics daylight will enhance guidance LED lighting at entrances, murals or sculptures play a major role, and makes it a prominent landmark.
  • 22. 2. SOUND : the sounds, that one gets to hear, at an airport, are mostly of announcements about the incoming and outgoing flights. The announcements are loud, and extremely clear to grab the attention of the passangers. 3. COLORS : The colors used on an airport, consists, of mostly whites, and neutral colors, but signages, add the extra element to an airport. .illuminated signs, enhance the readability of the signage. High contrast in signages, has a good readibility from a distance. 4. TARGET CUSTOMERS : It is usually preferred by people belonging to the upper class since travelling by flights involves a lot of cost.
  • 23. FUTURE OF DÉCOR PRODUCTS 1. Automated check in : passengers, are opting for online check in, or self service . Thus in the future passengers might be given a biometric, which will store their passport, and ticket details for a temporary time in the smartphone. 2. Bag collection : the bags, will have chips infused in them, which will alert the passengers, about when to collect the baggage, and from which belt. 3. Body scanners : these scanners can get into the depth of a person’s behaviour, slight change or suspiscion in behaviour may help in arresting criminals. This in turn also eliminates of the passengers going through this tedious process.
  • 24. FUTURE OF SPACE AT THE AIRPORT 1. Terminals : the terminals gates as compared to the lobbies, are way smaller in size. Thus the architecture of the terminals need to change as people spend most of their time there, and more money should be put into it for its development. 2. Green spaces : airports are moving towards having dedicated green spaces, rather than only luxury shopping, as an aspect which attracts the media, and makes it unique.

  • 28. TEA STALL Lower class SPACE DIVISION: It was located on a street with very small space. • It had space for only one person to stand and make tea for customers. • It has a small stall made with steel body. • It has shelter made of plastic sheet supported by Bamboo sticks. It was made to keep the stall safe from Rain and sun. • There was a small place for people to sit, behind the stall. • People usually stand in front of the stall and have tea or some sit where ever they find place to sit. • Near the stall there is small space kept to keep the glasses and other Useful things used by the owner.
  • 29. • Light: There was only one tube light in the stall. Street light helped in making the place little bright. • Sound : Since it is on a street, traffic commotion is disturbing. • Hygiene is not maintained, since no dustbin is kept. • Since they serve the tea in a glass, there was a small space where they wash all the glasses. • A stove is also present to make tea.
  • 30.
  • 32. INTRODUCTION 1. Reasonable prices, as target customers are usually middle class people 2. Good variety of snacks and beverages 3. Good quality 4. Time effective 5. Not enough payment options.
  • 33. LIGHTING 1.the place is well lit, as far as the interiors of the space is considered. It has a total of 3 tube lights, which are sufficient for the customers, to order, and the employees to serve them. 2. It also consists of 3 ceiling lights, on the outside which provides light to the people standing at the tables placed outside. 3. The banner of the café, is not at all lit up, which is a cause of concern as people cannot clearly identify the place. 4. Lighting inside the café, exists for fulfillling only one sole purpose, and does not actually add an extra element to the feel of the café.
  • 34. SPACE The space element at this café is extremely small, with just enough space to place an order at the counter, and wait on the outside till the order arrives. There is no seating arrangement , and consists of only 2 round, tall tables, for people to keep their tea cups on. The space, does not invite, people to sit, for long hours. People spend only 10-15 minutes here, and come for short breaks only.
  • 35. COLOR The entire café has only one color, that is yellow. Right from the logo, to the paper cups and the walls, everything is in the same shade of yellow. One of the reasons of keeping the color yellow, might be that of depicting the color of hunger and that of friendship and happiness. This perfectly justifies their name as well.
  • 36. FUTURE OF DÉCOR PRODUCTS • 1. A vending machine , to give tea and coffee, could be used. This would in turn save time, of the people waiting for their tea or coffee to be made. • 2. The color of the interiors, is very monotonous and bright, hence a color or two, may justify the funky name as well. • 3. A dedicated space to keep the tables, is a necessity since it kind of blocks the entrance to the café. • 4. Hygiene could be improved, by keeping the dustbins, faraway from the table area.
  • 38. THE SPACE There is just enough space for you to walk through to your table, to sit. There is not much free space, there is only so much space for you to move from the counter to your seat. That suggests a bit about how it is a place for you to sit, talk or work; much like any other café. But the overall “feel” of it is much different. The wall textures, the drawings, the wooden furniture, the lamps, the lights etc, are the game changers. For example, Café Coffee Day. People choose Starbucks over CCD for reasons like 1. the lighting 2. the ambience and 3. the products.
  • 39. The counter is rather crowded with options that never fail to capture our eye. We are tempted to check out everything that’s kept on the desk. With the tones of brown mostly, all the objects are quite interesting to possess. But the truth is that they don’t add up to your life much, except for the fact that they’re from Starbucks – but that is exactly what they want as well. The cold coffees are named very exotically, the food reminds us of the US – tempting us to adapt to their popular choices in food. There is a 100 kinds of drinkables, which are different coloured so they might taste deliciously different as well.
  • 40. It is also placed high, above the usual height that we get to see in Indian cafes. It enables us to look at the menu placed at the top of the counter. We’re given an option to enrol for a membership, which gives us a membership card to pay through each time we come, instead of using money. The cups are of different sizes; Tall, Grande, Venti and Trenta. The smallest cup size is called Tall, ironically. There are packaged Frappuccino's available, as ready to drink products – for people who may be preferring something quick.
  • 41.
  • 42. LIGHTING The space is lit in a very balanced way. There as many shadows observed as there are lights. The lighting is done in such a way that there is enough shadows, so that there is a certain ambience created. Due to this, when people sit under this lighting, the light falls on the object/ person in a very interesting way - that adds up to the “lavish” element of the café. Such kind of lighting usually helps hide any flaw. Such bright, yet soothing lights help you ignore certain flaws. For example, compare the pictures taken in here with another from any other café, we notice that the light is much better in Starbucks, it betters the look and feel.
  • 43.
  • 44.
  • 45. AMBIENCE The entire café has only two colours that we can see, brown and green. Green is the colour of the logo and it seen here and there but the colour brown is pretty much everywhere. The walls, the counter, the paintings, the furniture. Every element has an undertone of brown. That makes us feel like the environment is highly planned and organised, adding up to the speciality element. The sound in the environment is quite calm, and adds to the social aspect of the café. There are usually songs played, that uplift the spirit of the people sitting in there.
  • 46. In cafés like CCD, there is a simpler approach to the décor. The furniture and walls do add up to the ambience but there is a lack of harmony in the place, which we get to see in cafés like Starbucks. The credit goes to the walls and the furniture – the browns, basically. There is a unity between all the elements, not only due to the colour but also because of the way they’re arranged.
  • 47. THE FUTURE OF DÉCOR IN STARBUCKS The future of it, we can say, could be glass. Since the only material that screams “elite”, more than wood, is glass. The furniture is well placed around the corners and is made of solid wood. But in the future, there could be furniture that is made of glass, instead of wood. Starbucks sticks to its element of lavishness, which makes it stand different from all other cafes. As soon as you get in, you are a person who demands a fancy hot coffee to sip while you read a book. It is an experience which leaves you feeling elite. So while their motto seems to be that, as the materials get advanced, the set up is only going to get better and fancier. There could be glass tables, brown tinted or more so, the wood may stay the same. The set up being very simple yet striking, there might not be any drastic changes in their décor. Chances are that their organic yet lavish décor will pertain.

  • 50. EXISTING PLAN Dosteaa area : 10x10ft Stove rack : 9ft(length) Sink space : 1ft Space between shelf and stove rack : 4ft Distance between shelf and entrance : 3ft
  • 51. ERGONOMIC FACTORS ( CHANGES MADE ) • There were 3 shelves to store items. To a hassle free work station, we have changed it to an L shaped single shelf, that has 3 levels in it. • As customers come to the counter, there are 2 huge containers of tea and coffee. There is a huge risk of them falling or hurting a customer, so we have placed them in the counter behind. • The display rack was rectangular in shape, but we have changed it to a curve in the front, so make it more comfortable and accessible, giving a wider space above. • We have given the tea shop a wallpaper with an apt logo, that adds to the space and attracts like minded crowd. The yellow makes the space look wider and brighter. • There were no chairs in the shop. But we have included foldable chairs, that are fixed to the walls. They provide seating for a short period of time (15-20 mins) that allows the customer to have a comfortable experience for as long as they choose to stay. Since the space is meant for the customer to spend only about 25 mins at max, the seating gives limited comfort, to serve the purpose of sitting and nothing more. This also helps in creating less chaos and clutter in the shop as there is moment, with the customers coming in and going out, not settling there for long.
