1. All about food
Цілі: активізувати вживання в мовленні тематичної лексики; виховувати культуру спілкування
та колективну співпрацю, інтерес до країни, мова якої вивчається; вдосконалювати
комунікативно-пізнавальну діяльність; вдосконалювати навички монологічного та діалогічного
мовлення, аудіювання, слухову пам’ять, увагу, здатність до здогадки, вміння працювати в парах
та вести дебати в групах.

Teacher 1 . Good morning, everybody! We are glad to see you happy and healthy in our class. Do
you know that healthy and long life depends on healthy food? How to eat well and be happy, good-
looking and thin? We'll try to answer all these questions today.
Teacher 2. I hope you are fine and you will be active and energetic at our lesson. So we are ready to
start our show 'Master Chef".
Teacher l . Today two groups of experienced cooks will try to convince everybody that they know
much about preparing different tasty things.
Music, girls-assistants appear.
Teacher 1. The green refrigerator is being opened by our assistant for the first group «As hungry as
hunters» and we meet its chief Julia. She can name at least five different ways of cooking potatoes.
She does not eat many biscuits and buns so she is a good-looking and pretty girl.
Her first assistant Rita eats a lot of healthy food. She does not eat much meat and drinks only
a little coffee.
And the last in this wonderful group is Dima. We know that he is a great sweet tooth. He eats
much chocolate, so he is always in a good mood.
Teacher 2. The red fridge is being opened for the chief of another group «Good health is above
wealth», Tania. She is very experienced in cooking meat and fish. She is quite a determined person
who makes decisions quickly and works very hard.
Her first assistant Yana is a great lover if chips and sweets though she knows that it is bad for
her teeth and figure. She is good at baking cakes.
The soul of any party and the last member of this group is Sasha. He is kind, generous,
energetic and organized although he occasionally panics when he has to do his exams.
Teacher 1. Two teams have occupied their places. Let's get some more information about them.
Teacher 1. (comes to team 1). Hi, you all look wonderful.
Students. Thank you.
Teacher 1. How are you?
Students. Fine thanks.
Teacher 1. Julia, are you a good eater?
J ul i a . Yes, I am.
Teacher 1. What do you usually have for breakfast?
J ul i a . I usually have some porridge, fried eggs and tea with lemon.
Teacher 1. OK. Thank you. Dima, what do you usually eat when you are hungry?
D i ma . Oh, when I am hungry I eat everything. I eat bread, meat, vegetables, sandwiches, almost any
food.
Te a c he r 1. Rita, you are slim and good looking. Do you keep to a diet? Do you take vitamin pills?
R i t a . Oh, no. I prefer fresh fruit and vegetables. They have enough vitamins.

Teacher 2. Sasha, have you got any favourite dish in your family?
S a s ha . M y mother cooks very well. She makes wonderful borsch. It is a regular and favourite meal
with us.
Teacher 2. Yana, are you a great lover of meat dishes? Do you often eat meat or are you a vegetarian?
Y a n a. I don't often eat meat, but I love eating chickens. I also try to eat a lot of fresh fruit and salads.
Teacher 2. OK. Tania, are you careful about food? What do you normally eat?
Ta ni a . I don't follow any diet. 1 have a big daily breakfast: cereal with milk, two pieces of toast
with butter.
Teacher 2. Thanks.
Teacher l. Nice. Our cooks are ready to show what they are able to cook. The supporters are ready to
help them. I am glad to introduce the fans of the team from the green fridge. Cheer them up! Those
are the fans of the cooks from the red fridge. The members of our respected jury have taken their
places, too. The head of the jury is...
Teacher 2. And our assistant is ready to open the fridge and show us what food is prepared for cooking
today.
Assistant. Today we have boiled potatoes, carrots, eggs, red beef, sausage, pickled cucumbers,
cabbage, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, slices of bread, a tin of sprats.
Teacher 2. Thank you. We have a wide choice of food. The cooks have some minutes to think what
ingredients are necessary for them.
Teacher 1. And it’s time for the fans of both teams to show their knowledge of our topic and get some
points for their teams. The first question is to the supporters of the green sector.
1) «Ketchup», the famous spicy sauce based on tomatoes, onions, vinegar and sugar was:
a) an American invention;
b) a Chinese invention.
Answer: ketchup was brought from China to the West by some English sailors.
Teacher 2. Our next question is to the supporters of the red sector.
2) What was the word «restaurant» used for the first time?

Answer: the word «restaurant» was used for the first time to describe a soup invented by a French
cook in the 16th century.
Teacher l. (to the cooks). Are you ready to name the food you've chosen?
Student 1. Yes, I think so. We have chosen…
Teacher 1. So our teams have 25 minutes to cook two dishes using the food they have just chosen.
Then we'll see whose dishes will be tastier.
Teacher 2. And we are applying to the supporters as usual. We need two students from each sector.
Using the vocabulary on Cooking Meals complete the charts below by adding the words in the correct
column.

Teacher 1. All the rest should recall our best Ukrainian fairy-tales. Do you know that almost
in all fairy-tales the main characters eat or drink something? Almost all fairy-tales end with the words:
«So if they are not yet dead,
They eat fresh-baked bread,
Drink water, not ale, carry hay in a pail
And milk in a sack from the cowhouse back».
The home task for both teams was to find out the sentences from the fairytales connected with
food and drinks. Before the lesson they gave us a list of these tales. Look at it.

Teacher 1. Well done. Both sectors were wonderful. Have a look at the blackboard. The supporters of
both teams were asked to write the words in correct columns. Let's see how they have coped with their
task. Read your columns
Vegetables are: potato, cucumber, tomato, onion, cabbage, lettuce, carrot.
Fruit are: pear, orange, banana, cherry, peach.
Meat: pork, chicken, lamb, ham, turkey, beef, goose, sausage.
Drinks: milk, juice, lemonade, beer, mineral water.
Teacher 2. Very good. You have good knowledge of words connected with food. Now I want the
members of our jury announce the score of our competitions.

Teacher 1. Thank you. Let's go on. We have one more task for the fans. Two supporters from each
sector are welcome. You can see a picture with some shapes on it. You should colour the shapes with
food words in and as a result you'll find a fruit.
Teachr 2. The rest of the supporters will have another task.
On this slope you should find out six food words. Mark them as quickly as possible.

Julia, can you tell what you have done and what you are going to do.
The students describe how they are doing their cooking using the words: to mix, to add, to open a tin,

Teacher 1. I t sounds absolutely delicious. We are looking forward to the end of cooking.
Teacher 2. Look, I think the supporters of our teams are ready to show us what they have done.
So, what fruit is it?
The students of one of the teams. It's a banana.

5. Teacher 1. What about our slopes? What words have you marked? (To the supporters of the red
sector.) Name three of them.

Teacher 2. (To the supporters of the green sector.) Name three other words.

Teacher 2. Nice, both teams have marked all the words on their slopes.
Teacher 1. Have you ever been to the supermarket? What can you buy there?
Students. We can buy almost all we want there.
Teacher 1. Let's imagine that we are in the supermarket now. Try to remember as many food products
as you can. (The students are shown the picture with a great number of products.)
Teacher 1. Take sheets of paper and write down all the products you have just seen.
Teacher 2. While the students are busy with their task our cooks are going to tell you some interesting
facts about food. Let's listen to them.
C o o k 1. Do you know that the world's biggest pancake ever was 49 foot in diameter and 1 inch in
deep with a weight of 2 tons. It was made in England in August 13, 1994, as a part of celebrations to
mark the 150th anniversary of the cooperative movement.
C o o k 2. The Royal Dragon restaurant in Bangkok Thailand can seat up to 5000 customers and is
manned by a staff of 1,200. Opened in October 1991, it employs 541 waiters, who wear roller skates
to enable them to serve up to 3,000 meals an hour.
C o o k 3. On October 27, 1996, the staff at the Polish daily newspaper Express Lustrowany produced
a cake with 900 candles on it, to celebrate the 900th goal scored by the Polish soccer club Vidzew
Lods.
Teacher 2. So time is up. I want one supporter from each sector stand in front of the class. You'll read
your words in turn. The student who will name more food products is the winner.
Teacher 1. Let's try one more kind of work. The participants of our show will listen to the short texts
on the computer and do some tasks after that.
Teacher 2. The text for the green lector is about a boy and a girl, Paul and Mary. You should decide
who of hem always has a breakfast, who is a vegetarian and who eats a lot of fruit. So, good luck.
The audio-recording is turned on.
Paul and his sister Mary are different in a lot of ways. For example, Paul never has a breakfast
in the morning, but Mary always has cereal and toast. For lunch Paul often eats in the Red Lion pub
where they serve meals. He could order sausages and chips or have ham and eggs but he doesn't eat
meat.
So he usually has a cheese sandwich. Mary has a salad at least once every three days usually
with chicken or ham. Paul buys a lot of fruit but rarely has any because Mary always eats it before he
can.

Teacher 1. (to the red sector). Your task is almost the same. You should listen to the dialogue and
write how many times Chris eats in a day, what he usually eats for breakfast, what he drinks for
breakfast. Listen to the text and fill in the chart.
— Chris, I can see you enjoy food. What do you normally eat?
— I love my food and normally I eat six times a day.
— Six times! All right then. What do you usually have for breakfast?
— In the morning, I always have a big English breakfast.

Teacher 1. We know that the supporters of our cooks are great foodies. They know that eating the
proper food is important to stay healthy. What are the basic types of food a person should eat?

Teacher 1. your tables you have two boxes (for each sector) and a number of cards with the names of
food. You should distribute the cards between two boxes and explain why you did so.
Teacher 2. While the students are distributing their cards the cook of the red sector will tell some more
interesting information for our guests.

of 1000 foot in Japan.
C o o k 2. The banana is the most consumed fruit in the world. It's also the fifth most important
agricultural commodity in terms of international trade, coming after cereals, sugar, coffee, and cocoa.
C o o k 3. A pizza with a diameter of 122 food 8 inches was baked at Norwood Hypermarket, South
Africa on December 8, 1990. The largest ice- cream was made in Edmonton, Canada. It weighted 24
tons.
The students of both sectors explain how they distributed the cards with the names of food:
- meat products help us have a strong and healthy body;
- dairy builds strong teeth and bones by providing calcium;
- fruits and vegetables help us have healthy gums, good eyesight by providing vitamins A and C;
- bread and cereal give us energy by providing protein, iron and several В vitamins.
Teacher 1. You know that some English word combination cannot be translated word to word. Each
sector has two idioms. Try to guess how they are translated:
- to eat your words (взяти свої cлова);
- to have you cake and eat it (порівнювати несумісне);
- to eat somebody out of house and home (об'їдати когось);
- to make a meal of something (ускладнювати щось)
Teacher 2. Our dear cooks, your time is up. Be ready to show the dishes you have cooked. Put
them on the table. How did you name your dishes?
Teacher 1. Our cooks have some minutes to write the recipes of their dishes. And their supporters
have a chance to make their results better. Both sectors have prepared some more questions to their
opponents.

to food is the same as our attitude to life! Do this questionnaire and discover more about yourself and
