2. Soil Stabilization
• The process of improving the engineering properties of soil to
increase the strength and durability of soil.
3. Advantages of soil stabilization
• Improves mainly the strength of subbase and base.
• Economical cost of road construction.
• Reduces the undesirable properties like swelling or shrinkage, high
plasticity, compaction difficulties.
• Reduce compressibility.
• Improve permeability characteristics.
4. Applications
Soil stabilization is used in many sectors of the construction industry.
• 1. Highway construction, airfield pavement and roadways
• 2. Embankment construction
• 3. Rural roadways
• 4. Early & late season construction
• 5. Parking areas

5. Methods of Soil Stabilization
Mechanical Stabilization
-compaction (reducing air voids)
-consolidation (expulsion of pore water)
-Soil gradation (mixing of different
size particles like aggregates, clay, gravel etc.
ie making the soil well graded.)
Chemical Stabilization/Additives
ie. adding chemical like
-Lime
-Sodium Silicate
-Calcium Chloride
-Bituminous materials
6. Mechanical Soil Stabilization
• Compaction- Improves the compactness of the soil, it reduces the air
voids of the soil and make the soil denser.
• Consolidation- After expulsion of excess pore water from the soil, the
grain to grain contact of the soil particles increases which enhances
the load bearing capacity of soil.
• Soil gradation- Well graded soil always have better strength as
compared to poorly graded soil. So mixing of different size particles
reduces the overall void ratio and improves soil strength.
8. Chemical Soil Stabilization
Using Lime
Lime-Soil stabilization is the process of adding lime to the soil to
improve its properties like density, bearing capacity etc. Various
factors affecting lime-soil stabilization are soil type, lime type,
lime content used, compaction, curing period and additives which
are briefly discussed below.
