Hurricane Katrina caused widespread damage and flooding in New Orleans in late August 2005. At least 80% of the city was flooded after levee breaches, with over 700 bodies recovered. Total losses from Katrina are estimated to exceed $100 billion, including over $34 billion in insured losses and a reduction of 1.4 million barrels per day of oil production in the Gulf of Mexico.
