George Frideric Handel Influences
Known for writing the greatest oratorio of all time "Messiah", George Frideric Handel was not only a
composer of masterpieces but also made significant contributions to all of the musical genres of his
generation (Bio, 2015). Handel brought a new popularity to operas and oratorios throughout England and
Germany and his music became a central part of England's national culture and he was later viewed as a
German composer of the first rank (Cudworth, 2014). This presentation will firstly be overviewing a
timeline of Handel's life and death, it will then go on to inform of Handel's major works and
accomplishments thus including his operas and oratorios. This presentation will then explain the
influences that Handel had in his era and in conclusion, express the influence Handel still ... Show more

George Frideric Handel was born on the 23rd of February 1685 (Late Baroque era) in Halle, Germany.
During his upbringing Handel had a passion for music and desired to study it, although his mother was
very supportive of his musical abilities, his father was not as accepting and opposing of his wishes he
would not even allow Handel to own a musical instrument causing Handel to have to sneak a keyboard
into his attic to practice. At the age of seven, Handel met composer Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow. Zachow
was so impressed by Handel's talent and invited Handel to become his pupil (Bio, 2015). After the death
of his father in 1702 and briefly studying law at the University of Halle, Handel decided to pursue his
musical aspirations and became an organist for the Reformed Cathedral in Halle. After a year of serving at
this sanctuary, Handel felt called to Hamburg where he joined the opera orchestra playing the violin and in
1705 directed his first opera Almira which was a success (Cudworth, 2014). A year later in 1706, Handel
moved to Italy where he mastered contemporary trends in Italian opera thus making him an international
figure. With expansion of knowledge he then

Carnival By Händel
Georg Friedrich Händel, a Baroque composer, born in Halle 'an–die–Saale', Germany on February 23,
1685 primarily performed as a keyboardist and had begun to compose music as a juvenile (Cudworth 7).
At the age of 19, Händel's initial opera Almira premiered in January of 1705 in Hamburg, Germany. Soon
after the completion of the aforementioned work, he would voyage to Florence, Italy (upon the invitation
extended to him by Prince Ferdinand de' Medici) to master the Italic form (Cudworth 12). Moreover, in
1709, Händel had constructed his first prodigious opera, Agrippina and premiered it during the Venetian
celebration of Carnival. Consequently, after the debut of this piece he felt that he had learned vastly from
his Italian mentors and friends

George Frederick Handel Essay
George Frederick Handel
George Frederick Handel was born on February 24, 1685 in Halle, Germany.
One of the greatest composers of the late baroque period (1700–50) and, during his lifetime, perhaps the
most internationally famous of all musicians. Handel was born February 24, 1685, in Halle, Germany, to a
family of no musical distinction. His own musical talent, however, expressed itself so clearly that before
his tenth birthday he began to receive, from a local organist, the only formal musical instruction he would
ever have. Although his first job, beginning just after his 17th birthday, was as church organist in Halle,
Handel's musical tendencies lay elsewhere. Thus, in 1703 he traveled to Hamburg, the operatic center of
Germany; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under the sponsorship of the duke of Chandos, he composed his oratorio
Esther and the 11 Chandos anthems for choir and string orchestra (1717–20). By
1719 Handel had won the support of the king to start the Royal Academy of Music for performances of
opera, which presented some of Handel's greatest operas:
Radamisto (1720), Giulio Cesare (1724), Tamerlano (1724), and Rodelinda (1725).
In 1727 Handel became a naturalized British citizen; in 1728 the academy collapsed. He formed a new
company the following year. Forced to move to another theater by the Opera of the Nobility, an opponent
company, in 1734, he continued to produce opera until 1737, when both houses failed. Handel suffered a
stroke and retired to Aachen (Aix–la–Chapelle) to recover. In 1738 Handel, as determined as ever, began
yet another operatic effort, which ended with his last opera, Deidamia, in 1741. During the 1730s,
however, the most important directions taken by Handel were, first, the composition of English dramatic
oratorios, notably Athalia (1733) and Saul (1739); and, second, the surge of instrumental music used in
connection with the oratorios, including some of
Handel's greatest concertos—the solo concertos of op. 4 (1736, five for organ and one for harp) and the 12
concerti grossi of op. 6 (1739). In 1742, Messiah, the work for which he is best known, was first
performed in Dublin. Handel

A Comparison Of Johann Sebastian Bach And George Frideric...
Although numerous composers have shown their musicality from different musical periods, only some of
the remarkably talented ones are still remembered and honored. Such composers' compositions are
performed all around the world even today. From the Baroque period, Johann Sebastian Bach and George
Frideric Handel are the two most renowned composers. Even though both of their compositions are
considered to be well written, they have shown completely different musical styles. Bach composed
pieces that are extremely complicated and intense, whereas Handel emphasized simplicity and clearness in
his work. Since their approaches in composing music completely differ, it is improper to deduce who is
better as they both are successful in their own unique ways. However, audiences in the Baroque period
had a strong opinion as to who is more successful. Many musical experts from the Baroque period tend to
indicate that Bach should have adopted Handel's musical styles in order for him to be even more
acknowledged as a composer. According to the John Hawkins's A General History of the Science and
Practice of Music, Johann Sebastian Bach was born into a musical family. He was the son of a formal
musician, John Ambrose Bach and the younger brother of an organist, John Christopher Bach. From a
young age, Johann Sebastian Bach has learned to play Harpsichord and Organ. With these instruments, he
started to pursue his career in music as an organist and a chamber musician at many churches.

The Life of G.F. Handel Essay
The Life of G.F. Handel George Frideric Handel was born on February 23rd, 1685 in Halle, Germany.
Handel had a passion for music from the time he was capable of understanding it. His father Georg was a
highly respected barber/surgeon (Cavendish, vol. 4, pg. 60), which did not believe in music as a career
and wanted his son to study law. Georg thought a career in law would offer more prospects and stability
(60). Handel's father was so against having his son play music, he took all of his son's instruments out of
the house. However, Handel was so interested in music he managed to sneak a clavichord into the loft of
the house on which he practiced secretly (60). In his early years, up until he ... Show more content on

While never actually working together, J.S. Bach copied many of Antonio's works in trying to unravel the
mystery that was behind his compositions. Then there's Francesco Geminiani, which was a student of
Corelli's (Carlin 59). Unlike the previously mentioned composers, Geminiani was a soloist choosing to
play the violin. The man responsible for teaching G.F. Handel how to play the keyboard and compose was
Friedrich Wilhelm Zachau, who was an extraordinary musician himself. Aside from the violins there were
also masters of the keyboards, such as a gentleman named Dietrich Buxtehude. Buxtehude had a
determination to make the church a center of musical activity (Carlin 62) and founded a series of
religious–oriented music. He is remembered today for his inspiration for Bach and other younger and
greater composers. Bach and Handel are considered the Classical Giants. While their music was a strong
influence to the Baroque time period, it was also their achievements that made them the most influential.
There were also masterminds such as Hayden and Mozart who added to the culmination marking the
development to what we consider classical music. Handel composed well over two hundred pieces in his
lifetime. Ranging from oratorios, operas, cantatas, sacred and secular vocals,

Comparing Handel And Bach
Bach versus Handel Two of the greatest Baroque Era composers that still influence music to this day with
their compositions are Johan Sebastian Bach and George Fredrick Handel. The influence of Bach and
Handel's music is found in mainstream media throughout the world. Their compositions are still played in
modern times by tribute bands, television commercials, operas, concerts and even sound therapies by
relaxation therapists. It is evident that their music has touched the lives of many people throughout the
centuries. Bach and Handel both have unique styles of music. Even though they are similar in some ways,
they are rather different in other ways. Handel and Bach composed music for similar types of instruments
and composed musical pieces and vocal works. They both wrote compositions for some of the same type
of works such as Fugues, Preludes, and Suites. Although, Handel wrote some operas, Bach wrote a large
variety of church music. Majority of Bach's compositions were Cantatas and Passions. What made
Handel's music rather different then Bach was the fact that he used simple harmonic progression. Bach's
music was written with sudden surprising harmonic shifts and he also focused on adding extra ordinary
chords throughout his works. Handel preferred using simple textures, by creating music with three
different melodies that were to be played at once, while several other instruments were being played at the
same time. Bach on the other hand creatively composed his music

The similarities are that both opera and oratorio have soloists, ensemble, distinguishable characters, arias,
and choirs. Most of the arias in opera are very similar in musical style, form, nature of the musical ideas,
and technique of expressing affects to the arias in oratorios. Handel's arias in operas have strictly Da Capo
structure which makes them longer because of repeating. Since many people didn't like the idea of using
of Da Capo and the fact that after the character is done singing exited the stage, both of these things were
abandoned. Today arias are in strophic form as in ballad opera. One more big similarity between opera
and oratorio is that they both have librettos and recitatives that could be performed not only by a male, but
by a female as well. Handel also preferred to write operas and two oratorios in Italian

What Is George Frideric Handel?
George Frideric Handel was truly one of the greatest Baroque composers. He composed many major
musical works and contributed greatly to the development of the musical world. According to Goulding,
Handel is known as "Baroque Melodist; Oratorio Genius" (5). Handel is perhaps most well–known for his
oratorio, Messiah. When people think of Messiah, it is a foregone conclusion that it is 'Handel's Messiah.'
Much can be learned about George Frideric Handel through examining his life, musical works, and
Christian faith. George Frideric Handel was born in Halle, Germany on February 23, 1685. His family
consisted of his father, a barber–surgeon, his mother who was the daughter of a Lutheran pastor, six step–
siblings, and three siblings (Steen, 34). As a child, he endured many difficulties, one of which was the
almost complete prohibition of music, both the learning of it and having access to it. Kavanaugh stated,
"Even though young Handel showed extraordinary musical talent as a child, his father refused for several
years to permit him to take lessons" (27–28). The real reason for this prohibition may not truly be known,
but there are a few possibilities. Perhaps Handel's father feared the life of a musician would be too hard
for his son, or perhaps he also wanted his son to study law at university and be successful. Consequently,
Handel continued through his childhood mostly deprived of music. However, at the age of eight or nine,
Handel was playing a postlude at church, and the duke of Weissenfels heard him play (Smith & Carlson,
39). The duke then ordered Handel's father to allow him to have music lessons. His teacher was one of the
best teachers in all of Germany, "energetic Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, who was organist at the
Liebfrauenkirche" (Hogwood, 15). To have such an experienced teacher most likely contributed greatly to
Handel's growth in music.
Handel worked hard and in a few years, he completed his first composition and could even take the place
of his teacher at the organ (Smith & Carlson, 40). He performed his first opera when he was nineteen,
after which he went to Italy where so many talented artists and musicians had gone before him. He spent
six years traveling through Italy and the surrounding

Comparison and Contrast of Classical Composers Handel and...
Classical composers comparison and contrast: Handel versus Bach
Handel and Bach are considered two of the greatest composers of all time. However, when comparing the
output of these two musicians, the diversity manifest in music in the era when they wrote immediately
becomes apparent. Handel, although he used religious subject matter, is usually characterized as
fundamentally a 'secular' composer. He composed for the concert hall, not the church, and primarily as a
result of royal commissions. His music is strident, powerful, and large in scope. It is designed to entertain,
rather than to spur contemplation (The pure power of Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus', NPR, 2008). Bach, in
contrast, often created music designed to be performed in sacred spaces. His music is more fluid and
nuanced in style and designed more to spur contemplation and devotion rather than excite people's interest
as a piece of entertainment. Handel's "Halleluiah Chorus" from the Messiah is one of the most famous
pieces in all of Western classical music. The Chorus uses "the rhythm of the word hallelujah," to structure
the piece, lengthening the first note, and creating a stirring 'explosion' of sound at the end (The pure power
of Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus', NPR, 2008). The "King of Kings" passage is a single note, but by
"repeating the passage in higher and higher registers...[e]ach one seems to be the highest you could
possibly get," creating the "climax of the piece" (The pure power of Handel's

Terrorist And Freedom Fighter By Steven Handel
Terrorist and Freedom fighter can be separated through there definition, but not through there synonyms
that clarify an unjust distinction. It is a mentality that majority of American's apply whether they realize it
or not. Individuals according to Steven Handel believes that we implement "The Us vs. Them Mentality"
by extension elaborates the mentality that individuals for instance, Americans, give people who are
different than us through race, gender, age, nationality, culture, religion, or socioeconomic status. In his
article, The Us vs. Them Mentality: How Group Thinking Can Irrationally Divide Us, Handel maintains
that "We see it all the time in politics (Republicans vs. Democrats)" in other words these two groups act
irrationally and uncooperative. Consequently this causes the two groups to be blind and fail to recognize
other people's interests and values. Do we as American's also fail to recognize the interest or values of a
terrorist or do we just assume that they are pure evil? I believe that we fail to recognize a terrorist interests
and values. The ends justify the means but American's should not ignore these common differences.
Americans should be super mindful of the group that we identify ourselves in and the way we view other
people because it might have a negative effect. Americans are not the brightest of people; this might start
having a negative effect. Accordingly to Michael S. James that Americans are guilty of this act of
dehumanizing the enemy. To

Bach v. Handel When thinking of composers, whose works changed the world of music forever, many
names may come to mind. Among those on that list, both Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric
Handel are figures whose effect on music has been felt worldwide. Born in the same year, these
composers have much in common and many differences that illustrate their importance to their era and
music as we see it today. Their individualism and creativity influenced much of their time and together,
their works defined the Baroque Period as we know it today. Johann Sebastian Bach, born in the year

His career includes 42 operas, 29 oratorios, 16 organ concerti, over 120 cantatas, trios and duets, chamber
music, odes, and many ecumenical pieces, his most famous work being the Oratorio "Messiah."
Composed in 1741, the oratorio was preformed first in Dublin in 1742. It had a scriptural text from the
King James Bible and was written for modest vocal and instrumental forces. The work, although very
much in the style of Handel, is a series of thoughts on the Christian idea of redemption and utilizes a
mixture of traditions. After Handel's death in 1759, the Oratorio began to gain popularity even further and
was adapted to larger scale choirs and orchestras. Handel has very much influenced the world of music,
especially through his operas, and has grown in popularity throughout the years. As the inventor of
English Oratorios and being so well known for his Italian operas his style and influence is felt around the
world even still in the music of today. So where are the similarities between these two composers? Both
being German and born in the same year, both excelled at organ and studied the music of German and
Italian composers. Being masters at counterpoint, both exhibited similarities in their skills and styles.
Aside from Bach's absence from opera, both composers had remarkable influence on nearly every
contemporary genre. They both made huge impressions on keyboard pieces, being exceptionally skilled at
organ.

Importance Of The Opera Rinaldo
The opera Rinaldo by George Fredric Handel is one of Handel's earliest most successful works. This case
study aims at discovering more about the different contexts of the opera, the structure, and the
performances of Rinaldo. The context around Rinaldo is important as it can examine the environment
around the time of the composition and the relationship that Handel had with the patrons, performers,
librettists, audiences, and publishers. The compositional elements that Handel used in Rinaldo as well as
the significance of the genre and the relationship between music and its text–setting is crucial to the
discussion and discovery of the structure through the music. Through looking at these two sections, it is

In 1706, Handel travelled to Rome but at the time, the church had banned opera in some states so he wrote
sacred music for the church. It was in 1707 and 1709 that Handel wrote his fifth opera Rodrigo and sixth
opera Agrippina respectively. In 1710 on his way to London, after becoming Kapellmeister to Prince
George, Handel wrote his 7th opera, Rinaldo which premiered in 1711 on the 24th of February
(Schoelcher, 1857). Handel wrote Rinaldo within a fortnight with the directional aid of Aaron Hill who
was the director of the Haymarket Theatre at the time. They performed the opera 15 nights in a row which
back then, was a rare occurrence (Lang, 2012). These moments may have lead Handel to write the opera
Rinaldo in 1711.
George Fredric Handel's librettist for the opera Rinaldo was Aaron Hill but Giacomo Rossi translated it
into Italian (Rodina, 2008). Rossi, has been "universally condemned as a miserable poetaster." However,
the opera Rinaldo was Rossi's first libretto for Handel. Rossi does defend himself for the pace that he had
to write the lyrics for the opera. "Mr. Hendel, the Orpheus of our century, while composing the music,
scarcely gave me time to write, and to my great wonder I saw an entire opera put to music by that
surprising genius, with the greatest degree of perfection..." Handel was often in front of the librettist when
writing the music to any opera but especially for Rinaldo. He was so impatient when waiting for lyrics

great composers, Johannes Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, and the lives they led. They both

George Frideric Handel's Water Music
Not only is George Frideric Handel's Water Music extraordinarily beautiful, it also helped to establish the
orchestral suite as a legitimate art form. Written to be performed outside instead of in a theater, it remains
one of the most outstanding compositions in Handel's catalogue. Even though it is somewhat overplayed,
the Water Music continues to be a very popular work of art. By nature of the venue this great work was to
be performed in, Handel had to be very original in orchestration. His strong usage of woodwinds and

George Frideric Handel is generally considered the second most important Baroque composer after Bach.
Unlike Bach's nearly complete focus on church music in Germany, Handel more openly embraced the
French, Italian, and English secular music. Also unlike Bach, Handel did not come from a long line of
musicians. When he was born on February 23, 1685, Handel's family had no idea that he would rise to a
legendary status in music. Handel's father began to see his son's desire to compose at an early age and
violently objected. His mother was responsible for nurturing and continuing his musical education. At the
age of seven, Handel was asked to give an organ recital for the Duke of Sachse–Weissenfels. The Duke
was very impressed and awarded the family with a generous amount of money. This event persuaded his
father to allow Handel to pursue his musical career. When his father died in1697, Handel was freed from
his father's will. He studied with numerous organists and gained minor fame. In 1703, he moved to
Hamburg. There he met Telemann and began to have many of his works performed. He then traveled to
Rome and numerous European capitals until he settled in England in 1714. He remained a world traveler
his entire life which was a main contributing factor to his originality and probably was responsible for his

George Frideric Handel was a German–born composer whose specialty included operas, instrumentals,

the great musical pioneers of the Baroque musical era and, according to the text, Enjoyment of Music, are

Bach's Wachet Auf was, however, composed as a church cantata which was the conventional way of

composition by way of several quick exclamations making use of longer notes and a mixture of
homophonic, monophonic and polyphonic musical textures, which all seem to change abruptly. The
highlight of this piece culminates when all voices and instruments perform in unison. Wachet Auf, First
Movement, utilizes an array of rising scales which seems indicative a forward procession which provides
the kind of movement in which music in the baroque era was known for. Wachet Auf, First Movement

George Frideric Handel was born in Halle, Germany on February 23, 1685. He expressed an interest in
music at an early age. While his mother encouraged this love of music, his father, George Handel, was not
supportive of him pursuing music as a career, and pushed him towards a career in law. However, when
Handel was 9, a duke heard him playing the organ and persuaded his father to let Handel study under
Friedrich Zachow (the organist at the Liebfrauenkirche at Halle) who instructed him in the organ as well

Handel had started to experiment with oratorios in 1732, after the success of a ballad opera called the
Beggars Opera by Johann Pepusch and John Gay. His own operas had declined in popularity, and operas
were expensive and difficult to produce (Barber, and Donald). An oratorio was basically the same thing as
an opera, except there were no expensive sets and costumes (Bonds). Handel composed Messiah from
August 22 to September 14, 1741, a space of only 3 weeks. After finishing the oratorio, he put it away and
started to work on another oratorio, Saul. It sat collecting dust for months, until Handel was invited to
Ireland to visit the Duke of Devonshire in early November of 1741. After a rather disappointing opera
season in 1740 and 1741, Handel was eager to get to Dublin. The libretto for Messiah was written by
Charles Jennens (who also wrote the libretto for Saul) in the summer of 1741. It contained a compilation
of verses from the bible; it didn't tell a story, but reflected on the life of Christ and the Christian message,
which is why it is a popular performance with churches today (Barber, and Donald). Messiah contains a
recitative, "He that dwelleth in heaven", and an aria, "Thou shalt not break them". A recitativeis a style of
singing that is between a lyrical song and speech, and makes the words clearer and easier to understand.

Authentic Performance Essay
Introduction
Messiah is an oratorio, written in English and composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741, with a
scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible and the version of the Psalms
included with the Book of Common Prayer. It was first performed at the Great Music Hall, Fishamble
Street in Dublin on 13th April 1742. From this modest premiere, it gained huge popularity and has
become one of the most well–known and regularly performed pieces of Western choral music. This essay
will discuss whether it is possible to produce an authentic performance of the work and if that is desirable.

Nor do newspaper reports really help us understand how it was performed– they simply report it as a
"triumph" and a "delight".
Specifically
There is also a specific conundrum with an AP of Messiah– we need to decide which performance we are
trying to replicate, as there is no single, definitive version of the oratorio. In total Handel created
altogether nine different versions of the work, and forty–three versions of the fifteen different solos. Every
single one of the nine different versions that Handel wrote is unique, and all have a wide variety of
approaches. Handel re–orchestrated the piece almost every time he re–performed it over the years before
his death in 1759, introducing new movements and re–writing others, as well as increasing the number of
performers/instrumentalists and making adjustments to suit the songs to the different singers'

"Gloria" is a piece by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina from the Renaissance Era.Baroque music broke
away from the harshness of the Medieval and early Renaissance style with new emphasis on the use of
vocal and instruments. Many musical forms were born out of this era including opera. Some composers of
this time were Tomaso Albinoni ,Antonio Vivaldi, Johann David Heinichen,George Frideric Handel,
Domenico Scarlatti , and Johann Sebastian Bach. The church was the most important place where Baroque
and Renaissance were playing as a serve in the church . There are many changes happened between the
renaissance and baroque period : The first crucial distinction is the texture the shift from the imitative
polyphony in the renaissance era to treble–bass polarity, monody and the development of basso continuo .
The second crucial distinction is the tone of the baroque music was of development of tonal architecture
and formal principles; baroque, binary, ternary, fugue, etc. while the form of renaissance music was much
of the systematic point imitation and Cantus Firmus structures. The third crucial distinction is the Baroque

Bach And Handel : The Great Composers Of The Baroque Period
Bach and Handel are often compared against each other as the great composers of the Baroque period.
They both were masters of the Baroque music and wrote many pieces that are still part of the normal and
required repertoire. However, Paul Henry Lang makes an argument against comparing these two
composers together as well as an argument against the idea of Handel being a German national composer.
Lang had extensive education in this field, and so he was able to argue these points with facts behind him.
Paul Henry Lang was born in Hungary in 1901. He graduated from the Budapest Academy of Music in
1922, trained in musicology at both the University of Heidelberg and the Sorbonne in Paris, completed his
doctoral dissertation at Cornell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This of course does not exhaust the genres they wrote. Lang believes that, while they often wrote in the
same genres, it is unfair to compare them because of the differences in their purpose for writing music.
Lang supports this by stating that out of the great works Handel produced only two of them, the Messiah
and Theodora, are strictly from the Old Testament or the legends of antiquity. He states, "Yes, Bach 'sang'
of Christ, all his life, but where did Handel?". So, while they wrote many of the same styles of works their
subject matter was often quite different. This difference in subject matter quite possibly was due to their
lives. Bach was primarily a church musician, and so he approached music with this mindset. Handel wrote
music more for entertainment than for the church as previously stated. So it only makes sense that their
music would have differences because of their purposes in writing the music and their geographical
locations. I would like to interject here with a comment about Lang's articles. Lang led myself to believe
that Handel traded his German identity for an English identity. However, Dr. Mr. Vaneman portrayed
Handel in a very different light. He talked about Handel bringing the Opera to England and then English
being excited and engaged by it. He spoke of Handel using his German knowledge to his advantage,
rather than simply discarding the

The Handel: A Short Story
I miss feeling the touch of another person's skin. The scent, the glance, the unique movements. These were

stand there with my hand around the handel, for what feels like forever. I let my fingers slip from the

rock forms in my throat and tears collect in my eyes. Forget the handel, there's always tomorrow. The

How Did Handels Influence Music And Theatre
Britain in the mid–1700s was an exciting place. The power of the Church was rapidly declining and more
and more often, people looked to worldly pleasures for fun. At the same time, there was influx of national
pride, the citizens turning their backs on the outside influences they'd so enjoyed before. Music and
theatre were overflowing the bounds of the country–anyone who was anyone would be at the theatre for
opening nights, and one of the aforementioned nights, which though one of the smallest of the century is
possibly of the greatest of all time, was of Handel's Messiah. George Frideric Handel, the German–born,

George Frideric Handel made an incredible impact on several other well known musical composers. "He

apparently stated, " He is the only person I would wish to see before I die, and the only person I would

The Baroque Era Essays
THE BAROQUE AGE
Social and Cultural Background
Baroque is a term borrowed from the visual arts and one that is used in many different senses. The
Baroque Era applies to the years between
1600 and 1750. The most famous composers of this time were Bach, Handel,
Vivaldi and Teleman.
Politically it was an age of magnificent absolute Monarch's. The most magnificent of all was Louis XIV
of France. Louis ruled from 1634 until 1713.
During this time the need to create a national culture or a regional style that would match or surpass the
elsewhere created cultural models was pressed for.
When looking at Baroque architecture it is noticeable that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The composers at this time usually did not specify dynamics on their pieces, they simply wrote "loud" or
"soft."
The most prominent element in Baroque music was rhythm and texture. Baroque's fast movement
generally caused the feeling of rhythmic drive. Tempos were always constant. The least prominent
element was melody. Gradual rise of tonality on the other hand was a great Baroque innovation. This is
the major–minor system that is still used today in the twentieth century.
Opera was one of the most important developments in the Baroque
Era. It began in Florence in 1600. French operas featured more emphasis on the orchestra and chorus.
During this time Handel invented the oratorio.
An oratorio is a large work for soloists, chorus, and orchestra sung in concert format, without costumes or
staging, in a concert hall rather than as part of a church service. Some other instrumentals formed during
this era were: Concerto Grosso: in three movements, fast–slow–fast, and pits a large group of soloists
against the larger string ensemble.
Suite: a less formal structure consisting of several binary dance movements Fugue: Latin for "flight" or
"chase," denotes a standard Baroque compositional process.

2) Handel's stay in Hamburg inspired him to compose two operas for the theater; Handel's Almira, and

through 1710 where he met two composers who inspired him to start writing music in the Italian style.
These influences include: Archangelo Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti. Handel composed many operas
while he stayed in Italy, and also numerous oratorios. "In Florence, Venice, and Rome he became a great
success for his church compositions and instrumental music as well as for his operas." (Mackay, Para. 3)

The Influence of George Frideric Handel on Music
Introduction
Over time, the world has seen many outstanding musicians, and so much fantastic music. Each highly
remembered composer or musician changed the way we think and see the world. They give us new ideas,
and music is a wonderful way to convey moods and emotions. Each also slightly changed music itself.
Handel was one of the greatest of these people. He was a superior composer who largely influenced and
expanded music.
Background
George Frideric Handel was born in Germany, but found his future in England as a composer. Stanley
states that: "Handel was by training and temperament a composer... Like Mozart he possessed in the
highest degree the supreme attributes of the musical dramatist" (105–106). The surprising thing is Handel

England loved Handel dearly. He was famous all over. He wrote different genres, and for many occasions,
so many people were familiar with him, one way or another.
The musical history of England is greatly dependent on Handel. He was, undoubtedly, one of their most
honored composers.
To George Frederik Handel we own our prestige as a musical nation; to his inimitable genius and mighty
intellect we are indebted ... [Handel's operas] have served as a model for the formation of our national
style; his individual idiosyncrasies have become the accepted formulae of sacred musical utterance, and
the purity of his themes and major proportions of his style have given at once the example, and the spirit
of emulation to succeeding generations of native musicians! (Qtd in. Parker)
He gave England its reputation in music, providing the foundation for many fantastic composers after
him. Handel notably impacted the writings of future composers. Langlois evaluates Handel's influence in
many of Mozart's pieces. These are in pieces such as The Solemn Vespers, or C Minor Mass. He also tells
of Handel's influence on Beethoven. "There can be found a certain Handelian influence in Beethoven's
music. Many of Beethoven's grand themes sound as if they could have been written by Handel... More

George Frideric Handel George Frideric Handel (23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759) was a baroque era
composer, with an impressive repertoire of compositions. Handel didn't grow up in a music rich
environment, but in fact, he was forbidden by his father to touch any musical instrument, but found time
when everyone else was asleep to play a clavichord he had smuggled to an upstairs room in the house. He
grew up in Halle, Germany and at the age of 18, he traveled to Hamburg, and took a job as a violinist in
the Hamburg Opera House. He supported himself by giving private lessons, and eventually published his
first opera, Almira. That was in 1703. By the end of 1710 he had completed an Italian tour that included

Despite his success, life was not exactly easy for Handel. He was often criticized by members of the
English social establishment because of his artistic endeavors. Some of them had considered italian operas
silly, and some believed that his biblical dramas were profane. Case and point: Messiah, which he wrote,
was well received in Dublin at its premiere in 1742. however, when it came to London a year later, it was
clouded by controversy. The summer of 1737 took its toll on Handel physically as he had several bouts of
serious illness. Most likely these episodes were strokes, but the myth that it was central nervous system
lead poisoning is also widely accepted because of his imbibing of cheap port. As the years went on, his
vision went south because of bad cataracts, and went completely blind after the English occultist John
Taylor attempted to treat him. John Taylor also cared for J.S. Bach, who went blind too. Despite the
unfortunate circumstances, Handel remained optimistic, and kept his sense of humor about him. He was
always charitable, and became quite close with the Foundling Hospital, which continued to host annual
benefit performances of his Messiah. It was during this time, that he created some of the most enchanting
music ever written. He died on April 14th, 1759 at the age of 74. He was buried in Poets Corner in
Westminster Abbey. Handel is most notably recognized for his works Messiah and Water Music, but

Johann Sebastian Bach And George Frideric Handel
During the Baroque Period, dwelled two extremely skilled musicians, one a little–known organist, the
other a famous composer. These two men's names are Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel.
Johann Sebastian Bach lived from 1685 to 1750 and many would nominate him as the greatest musicians
that has ever lived. Bach was born in Eisenach Germany on the spring of 1885 and devoted his life to God
through his music. At the age of 10, Bach's parents died and so he went to live with his brother. Ironically,
his brother soon died and so Bach went to live in Luneburg where he attended school and studied musical
culture. Leaving Luneburg at 18, Bach began his first business by playing Violin and Viola with the

Handel was born in a town called Halle in Germany and although his father wished him to become a
lawyer, his father eventually recognized his musical talent and let him embrace it. Handel had only one
teacher, Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, whom trained Handel up in the organ, harpsichord, violin, and oboe.
Handel loved his Zachow and even after his death in 1712 Handel sent gifts to his widow and children.
After discovering opera, Handel journeyed to Italy to study everything there is to know about music.
While in Italy Handel created a few operas, one such opera called Agrippina became renowned in Venice
resulting in world fame. After Venice came Hanover, which was short lived and quickly replaced by
London, England in 1712. In England, Handel's operas became increasingly popular because of their
Italian touch. Eventually, people grew bored with operas and in response Handel started constructing
oratorios in English. Handel's music like Bach's is founded on his Christian faith. It was the foundation of
all his oratorios and even his first success Esther. Handel's most famous piece is his Messiah, which he
wrote in 24 days without once leaving his house. His servant had to bring food to him which often he
didn't eat and his servants often found him in tears Handel said, "I did think I did see all of heaven before
me and the great God Himself." In 1759, Handel, whom was almost blind, conducted 10 concerts ending
with his Messiah on April 6, he knew that this was his last performance. He wished for himself to die on
good Friday and so on April 14, 1759 George Frideric Handel died. Johann Sebastian Bach and George

Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Pachelbel, And Handel
There are three big periods of music. These periods are Baroque, Classical, and Romantic. In these
periods there were several different composers who helped shape that period. Here are but a few in each
of the period.
In the Baroque period, some composers are Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Pachelbel, and Handel. There, of course,
are much more as these are just four composers. First, Vivaldi, his full name is Antonio Lucio Vivaldi.
Vivaldi was born in 1678 and grew to be an Italian violinist and a composer. He was born with angina

By the time Claudio was in his teens, he had already published several religious and secular music, but his
music took a turn when he was employed by the Duke of Mantua. There he would meet Giaches De Wert
who changed his music drastically. The change puts his music in a whole new direction. Monteverdi will
later die in the year 1643.
The last composer mentioned is Handel. Handel was a German composer who was born in 1685 and later
became an English citizen in his later years. In Handel's younger years his father did not wish for him to
go into music due to thinking it would not create him enough money. Handel's mother did approve
through and helped him to study in secret. When Handel got older he would later, please his father by
going to school to become a lawyer but later dropping out to pursue music, his passion. Handel suffered
through several problems throughout the years. He struggled with anxiety and depression. He also
suffered two strokes within the same year. Both of which he made a shockingly quick recovery. Also in
his later years, he ended up losing sight in his left eye but that did not stop him as he continued to
compose. Two years after losing sight in his left eye, he lost sight in his right eye. Despite being
completely blind, he continued to compose depending on his memory of the notes to compose.
In the Classical period, some composers are Haydn, Boccherini, Mozart, and Hummel. There, of course,
are much more as these are just four composers.

Handel And Handel 's Influence On Music
Two of the greatest Baroque Era composers that still influence music to this day with their compositions
are Johan Sebastian Bach and George Fredrick Handel. The influence of Bach and Handel's music is
found in mainstream media throughout the world. Their compositions are still played in modern times by
tribute bands, television commercials, operas, concerts and even sound therapies by relaxation therapists.
It is evident that their music has touched the lives of many people throughout the centuries. Bach and
Handel both have unique styles of music. Even though they are similar in some ways, they are rather
different in other ways. Handel and Bach composed music for similar types of instruments and composed
musical pieces and vocal works. They both wrote compositions for some of the same type of works such
as Fugues, Preludes, and Suites. Although, Handel wrote some operas, Bach wrote a large variety of
church music. A majority of Bach's compositions were Cantatas and Passions. What made Handel's music
rather different from Bach was the fact that he used simple harmonic progression. Bach's music was
written with sudden surprising harmonic shifts and he also focused on adding extra ordinary chords
throughout his works. Handel preferred using simple textures, by creating music with three different
melodies that were to be played at once, while several other instruments were being played at the same
time. Bach on the other hand creatively composed his music by writing music

Compare the lives and works of Bach and Handel
Many musical scholars believe that J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel are the two most important, influential
composers of the Baroque period. Both of these men were born in Germany in 1685, and since they came
into existence around the same time, they share some similarities. As an introductory statement, Bach and
Handel were born into two very different families. Handel did not come from a musical family; his father
wanted him to study law. By age nine, his talent was too obvious for his father to ignore and Handel began
to study with a local organist and composer. On the contrary, Bach came from a long line of musicians.
Bach also had four sons which became gifted composers, in their own right. Bach, like Handel, also

In addition, Bach was a virtuoso on the organ. He also served as an organ consultant, and composer of
organ works, like toccatas, chorale preludes, and fugues. He had a reputation for having great creativity,
and he was able to integrate many national styles into his works. Many of his works are said to have North
German influences that were taught to Bach by Georg Bröhm. Bach also copied the works of many
French and Italian composers in order to decipher their compositional languages. Later on, he arranged
several violin concertos by Vivaldi for organ. Most experts of musical composition believe that the years,
between 1708 and 1714, were his most productive. Within this period, he composed several preludes,
fugues, and toccatas. During this span, Bach wrote the Little Organ Book, Orgelbüchlein. This book
remains an unfinished collection of forty–nine short chorale preludes. Later on in his life, Bach composed
the Orchestral Suite No.3 in D Major. This work's second movement was appropriately titled Air, because
it was an aria for the orchestra. Bach wrote music for single instruments, duets, and small ensembles.
Bach's works for solo instruments include the six sonatas and partitas for violin (BWV1001–1006), the six
cello suites (BWV 1007–1012) and the partita for solo flute (BWV1013). Bach's best–known orchestral

George Briaric Handel Biography
George Frideric Handel was born February 23, 1685 to an affluent family in Halle, Germany. His father
was a well–to–do barber and surgeon that worked for the court of the Duke of Saxony (Charlton 82).
Handel's father wanted a law education and a legal career for his son, but at the age of eight Handel's
father allowed him to begin music study within their town's Lutheran church, where young Handel
learned to play the "organ, harpsichord, violin and oboe," (Charlton 83) as well as studied composition.
Handel's mother nurtured his musical gifts, but his father had tried to persuade him from going into music

Handel Goes Wild: Music Analysis
In a recent phone interview with Christina Pluhar, founder and director of the early music ensemble
L'arpeggiata, tells WOSU Radio that "for Handel, improvisation was extremely important, and for all
musicians from that time, as well." This statement is clear in her new album Handel Goes Wild. Heavily
influenced by jazz and latin rhythms, Pluhar takes some of Handel's famous works and interprets them in
a new way with jazz harmonies and improvisations.
Treatises from the baroque era attest that Handel and his contemporaries expected musicians and vocalists
to improvise and add ornaments. This album follows that tradition but updates it to include influences of
jazz and world music traditions. Although their use of ornaments may not conform with the baroque
treatises, the idea of turning baroque music into jazz transforms the performer into a creator of fresh new
music that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In their adaptation of Kapsberger's Canario, Pluhar takes improvisation to a completely jazz and world
music style. Dancing to a rhythmic baroque guitar, the musical form of the piece invites individual
instrumental solo improvisations including an electric Hammond organ. Further, the use of konnakol and
percussion for solo improvisations takes authentic baroque performance practice outside the picture. The
use of percussion for improvisation would not have been used during Kapsberger's time. Following this
observation, it may be argued that Pluhar has gone too far into mixing different genres that the jazz–
spirited recording can seem disjointed. L'Arpeggiata's attempt to revive Baroque ornamental fluidness
through a contemporary improvisatory style seems ineffective when the audience takes this crossover
album literally. The purpose of this album is not to attempt a revival of the baroque in the original style,
but to create a new eyepiece where baroque music can be viewed through a contemporary

This particular opera was quite popular and had a twenty–performance run. Some of his other operas were

In 1710, he left Venice for London because he wanted to try freelancing. While there, Handel composed
the opera Rinaldo upon request from the manager of the King's Theatre. This opera is what "gained
[Handel] the widespread recognition that he would maintain throughout the rest of his career" (George).
His next few years were spent working for English royalty. In 1719, Handel was offered the position of
the Master of the Orchestra at the Royal Academy of Music, which he was happy to accept. Unfortunately,
the opera he composed while there were not that helpful to the academy. In 1726, Handel decided to

repertoire. In fact, it has been over one hundred years since any of them–except for Almira in 1874–were
performed publicly. Despite popular belief to the contrary, Handel's works were more than solos and
duets. In Alcina, Handel freely used the chorus during the scenes that involved Alcina's victims;

George Frederick Handel Research Paper
George Frederick Handel was a baroque composer and was born in Halle, Germany in on February 23,
1685. He later died April 14, 1759 in London, England. His father did not want him to pursue his career in
music. Handel's father didn't even allow him to own a musical instrument. But his mother helped and
supported him. He practiced secret because of his mother's support. He was later given the chance as a
young boy to play the organ for the duke's court in Weissenfels. In Weissenfels he met Frideric Wilhelm
Zachow an organist and composer. Zachow was impressed with his ability and Handel became a pupil of
his. Zachow taught him the organ, violin, oboe, and helped with composition. Handel began to compose

The Triumph Of Love During Handel 's Giulio Cesare
The Triumph of Love in Handel's Giulio Cesare
An Examination of the Character Cleopatra Through Motive and Music
In George Frideric Handel's masterful 18th century opera, Giulio Cesare, one may find many examples of
the classic operatic archetype of power, particularly in relation to love and fear in how they are both tools
that are oftentimes used to gain power. In this specific opera, Handel heralds the greater power–seizing
potency of love when compared to its counterpart–– terror. In this essay, I plan to examine how the
Egyptian character Cleopatra utilizes the power of love in order to achieve her own political and personal
gains. I shall use text examples from the libretto to show how she triumphs over the darker forces of her
enemies, Ptolemy and his great general named Achillas. In order to demonstrate the success that was
achieved by Cleopatra in her quest to take power over Egypt as well as to take the hand of the Roman
emperor, Julius Caesar, it is necessary to show exactly what kind of individual she was required to take
power over–– namely the tyrannical emperor of Egypt named Ptolemy. Ptolemy also happened to be
Cleopatra's brother. In the first act of the opera, Ptolemy has his general Achillas present Caesar with the
disembodied head of Caesar's enemy–– Pompey. Caesar had originally planned on allowing Pompey to
live as long as he asked for Caesar's pardon. This was at the request of Pompey's wife, Cornelia, and his
son, Sextus, who both came to Caesar

Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Pachelbel, And Handel
There are three big periods of music. Theses periods are Baroque, Classical, and Romantic. In these
periods there where several different composers who helped shape that period. Here are but a few in each
of the period. In the Baroque period some composers are Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Pachelbel, and Handel.
There of course are many more as these are just four composers. First, Vivaldi his full name is Antonio
Lucio Vivaldi. Vivaldi was born in 1678 and grew to be an Italian violinist and a composer. He was born
with angina pectoris or chest pain due heart disease of his heart not gaining enough oxygen, he was also
born with asthma. Due to these conditions he was known for running out of church, but he was also
known to run out due to a composition idea he would have. Once Vivaldi started to work he worked in a
place called Ospedal Della Pieta where he would teach women to play the violin. This place would later
be known as an orphanage since noble men would drop off the female children that they would have with
their mistresses and leave them there. The fathers of these girls helped pay the 'orphanage' as hush money
to keep the knowledge silent. Vivaldi was known to work here for several years on and off before he died
in 1741 at the age of sixty– three years old. Now another composer was Pachelbel. He was a German
composer fully named Johann Christoph Pachelbel. His exact birthday is unknown, but he was born in the
year 1653. Pachelbel wrote mainly for church and for his

Handel House Trust
The registered charity Handel House Trust Limited was incorporated on October 11 1991. It is overseen
by a Board of Trustees that meets recurrently to "provide strategic direction and monitor and review the
work of the Trust." Furthermore, they are accountable for compiling financial and Trustee reports for
presentation at the end of the financial year. More in–depth and legally specific information regarding
their role can be sourced from the museum's Financial Statements document. There are currently thirteen
members (including Bardwell and Stranack). Guided by Sarah Bardwell (former Director of Handel
House) and Alistair Stranack (the board's Chairman), Trustee Members are elected each April and form
several committees. Nominations Committee ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Circle members – currently fifty in number – pay £1000 to join and, in thanks for their support,
receive a number of exclusive benefits such as free entry and special events. These benefits are also
shared by the Handel House Trust of America. Alternatively, there are two branches of 'Friends' support:
Sonata and Cantata. The former is £40 a year and enables priority events booking and newsletters, whilst
the latter is £100 a year and additionally offers free admission and special events. At present, there are no
'Friends of Handel & Hendrix' type groups and, interestingly, it is possible to donate to Hendrix Flat
separately from Handel House. This hints at a marked and conscious separation of the audience–base.
However, as with the Gift Shop (as will be discussed later), the website may be providing outdated

George Frideric Handel Influences

  • 1. George Frideric Handel Influences Known for writing the greatest oratorio of all time "Messiah", George Frideric Handel was not only a composer of masterpieces but also made significant contributions to all of the musical genres of his generation (Bio, 2015). Handel brought a new popularity to operas and oratorios throughout England and Germany and his music became a central part of England's national culture and he was later viewed as a German composer of the first rank (Cudworth, 2014). This presentation will firstly be overviewing a timeline of Handel's life and death, it will then go on to inform of Handel's major works and accomplishments thus including his operas and oratorios. This presentation will then explain the influences that Handel had in his era and in conclusion, express the influence Handel still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... George Frideric Handel was born on the 23rd of February 1685 (Late Baroque era) in Halle, Germany. During his upbringing Handel had a passion for music and desired to study it, although his mother was very supportive of his musical abilities, his father was not as accepting and opposing of his wishes he would not even allow Handel to own a musical instrument causing Handel to have to sneak a keyboard into his attic to practice. At the age of seven, Handel met composer Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow. Zachow was so impressed by Handel's talent and invited Handel to become his pupil (Bio, 2015). After the death of his father in 1702 and briefly studying law at the University of Halle, Handel decided to pursue his musical aspirations and became an organist for the Reformed Cathedral in Halle. After a year of serving at this sanctuary, Handel felt called to Hamburg where he joined the opera orchestra playing the violin and in 1705 directed his first opera Almira which was a success (Cudworth, 2014). A year later in 1706, Handel moved to Italy where he mastered contemporary trends in Italian opera thus making him an international figure. With expansion of knowledge he then ... Carnival By Händel Georg Friedrich Händel, a Baroque composer, born in Halle 'an–die–Saale', Germany on February 23, 1685 primarily performed as a keyboardist and had begun to compose music as a juvenile (Cudworth 7). At the age of 19, Händel's initial opera Almira premiered in January of 1705 in Hamburg, Germany. Soon after the completion of the aforementioned work, he would voyage to Florence, Italy (upon the invitation extended to him by Prince Ferdinand de' Medici) to master the Italic form (Cudworth 12). Moreover, in 1709, Händel had constructed his first prodigious opera, Agrippina and premiered it during the Venetian celebration of Carnival. • 5. George Frederick Handel Essay George Frederick Handel George Frederick Handel was born on February 24, 1685 in Halle, Germany. One of the greatest composers of the late baroque period (1700–50) and, during his lifetime, perhaps the most internationally famous of all musicians. Handel was born February 24, 1685, in Halle, Germany, to a family of no musical distinction. His own musical talent, however, expressed itself so clearly that before his tenth birthday he began to receive, from a local organist, the only formal musical instruction he would ever have. Although his first job, beginning just after his 17th birthday, was as church organist in Halle, Handel's musical tendencies lay elsewhere. Thus, in 1703 he traveled to Hamburg, the operatic center of Germany; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under the sponsorship of the duke of Chandos, he composed his oratorio Esther and the 11 Chandos anthems for choir and string orchestra (1717–20). By 1719 Handel had won the support of the king to start the Royal Academy of Music for performances of opera, which presented some of Handel's greatest operas: Radamisto (1720), Giulio Cesare (1724), Tamerlano (1724), and Rodelinda (1725). In 1727 Handel became a naturalized British citizen; in 1728 the academy collapsed. He formed a new company the following year. Forced to move to another theater by the Opera of the Nobility, an opponent company, in 1734, he continued to produce opera until 1737, when both houses failed. Handel suffered a stroke and retired to Aachen (Aix–la–Chapelle) to recover. In 1738 Handel, as determined as ever, began yet another operatic effort, which ended with his last opera, Deidamia, in 1741. During the 1730s, however, the most important directions taken by Handel were, first, the composition of English dramatic oratorios, notably Athalia (1733) and Saul (1739); and, second, the surge of instrumental music used in connection with the oratorios, including some of Handel's greatest concertos—the solo concertos of op. 4 (1736, five for organ and one for harp) and the 12 concerti grossi of op. 6 (1739). In 1742, Messiah, the work for which he is best known, was first performed in Dublin. Handel continued ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. A Comparison Of Johann Sebastian Bach And George Frideric... Although numerous composers have shown their musicality from different musical periods, only some of the remarkably talented ones are still remembered and honored. Such composers' compositions are performed all around the world even today. From the Baroque period, Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel are the two most renowned composers. Even though both of their compositions are considered to be well written, they have shown completely different musical styles. Bach composed pieces that are extremely complicated and intense, whereas Handel emphasized simplicity and clearness in his work. Since their approaches in composing music completely differ, it is improper to deduce who is better as they both are successful in their own unique ways. However, audiences in the Baroque period had a strong opinion as to who is more successful. Many musical experts from the Baroque period tend to indicate that Bach should have adopted Handel's musical styles in order for him to be even more acknowledged as a composer. According to the John Hawkins's A General History of the Science and Practice of Music, Johann Sebastian Bach was born into a musical family. He was the son of a formal musician, John Ambrose Bach and the younger brother of an organist, John Christopher Bach. From a young age, Johann Sebastian Bach has learned to play Harpsichord and Organ. With these instruments, he started to pursue his career in music as an organist and a chamber musician at many churches. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Life of G.F. Handel Essay The Life of G.F. Handel George Frideric Handel was born on February 23rd, 1685 in Halle, Germany. Handel had a passion for music from the time he was capable of understanding it. His father Georg was a highly respected barber/surgeon (Cavendish, vol. 4, pg. 60), which did not believe in music as a career and wanted his son to study law. Georg thought a career in law would offer more prospects and stability (60). Handel's father was so against having his son play music, he took all of his son's instruments out of the house. However, Handel was so interested in music he managed to sneak a clavichord into the loft of the house on which he practiced secretly (60). In his early years, up until he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While never actually working together, J.S. Bach copied many of Antonio's works in trying to unravel the mystery that was behind his compositions. Then there's Francesco Geminiani, which was a student of Corelli's (Carlin 59). Unlike the previously mentioned composers, Geminiani was a soloist choosing to play the violin. The man responsible for teaching G.F. Handel how to play the keyboard and compose was Friedrich Wilhelm Zachau, who was an extraordinary musician himself. Aside from the violins there were also masters of the keyboards, such as a gentleman named Dietrich Buxtehude. Buxtehude had a determination to make the church a center of musical activity (Carlin 62) and founded a series of religious–oriented music. He is remembered today for his inspiration for Bach and other younger and greater composers. Bach and Handel are considered the Classical Giants. While their music was a strong influence to the Baroque time period, it was also their achievements that made them the most influential. • 11. Comparing Handel And Bach Bach versus Handel Two of the greatest Baroque Era composers that still influence music to this day with their compositions are Johan Sebastian Bach and George Fredrick Handel. The influence of Bach and Handel's music is found in mainstream media throughout the world. Their compositions are still played in modern times by tribute bands, television commercials, operas, concerts and even sound therapies by relaxation therapists. It is evident that their music has touched the lives of many people throughout the centuries. Bach and Handel both have unique styles of music. Even though they are similar in some ways, they are rather different in other ways. Handel and Bach composed music for similar types of instruments and composed musical pieces and vocal works. They both wrote compositions for some of the same type of works such as Fugues, Preludes, and Suites. Although, Handel wrote some operas, Bach wrote a large variety of church music. Majority of Bach's compositions were Cantatas and Passions. What made Handel's music rather different then Bach was the fact that he used simple harmonic progression. Bach's music was written with sudden surprising harmonic shifts and he also focused on adding extra ordinary chords throughout his works. Handel preferred using simple textures, by creating music with three different melodies that were to be played at once, while several other instruments were being played at the same time. Bach on the other hand creatively composed his music ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. George Frederic Handel George Frederic Handel, one of the greatest composers of the late baroque period. He was born February 24, 1685 in Halle, Saxony, Germany. Handel's parents were very religious and highly respected people since his dad worked as barber–surgeon. His father really wanted his son to study civil law, and in 1702, Handel started studying law. However, everyone around saw him as a genius musician. When Frederic was only eleven, he was already playing a pipe organ. He also learned to play the violin, clavichord, harpsichord, and oboe. His father realized that his son was a talented at music allowed him to be a musician. When young Handel turned 18 in 1703, he went to Hamburg, where he worked as a violinist at the Hamburg Opera and gave private lessons. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The similarities are that both opera and oratorio have soloists, ensemble, distinguishable characters, arias, and choirs. Most of the arias in opera are very similar in musical style, form, nature of the musical ideas, and technique of expressing affects to the arias in oratorios. Handel's arias in operas have strictly Da Capo structure which makes them longer because of repeating. Since many people didn't like the idea of using of Da Capo and the fact that after the character is done singing exited the stage, both of these things were abandoned. Today arias are in strophic form as in ballad opera. One more big similarity between opera and oratorio is that they both have librettos and recitatives that could be performed not only by a male, but by a female as well. • 15. What Is George Frideric Handel? George Frideric Handel was truly one of the greatest Baroque composers. He composed many major musical works and contributed greatly to the development of the musical world. According to Goulding, Handel is known as "Baroque Melodist; Oratorio Genius" (5). Handel is perhaps most well–known for his oratorio, Messiah. When people think of Messiah, it is a foregone conclusion that it is 'Handel's Messiah.' Much can be learned about George Frideric Handel through examining his life, musical works, and Christian faith. George Frideric Handel was born in Halle, Germany on February 23, 1685. His family consisted of his father, a barber–surgeon, his mother who was the daughter of a Lutheran pastor, six step– siblings, and three siblings (Steen, 34). As a child, he endured many difficulties, one of which was the almost complete prohibition of music, both the learning of it and having access to it. Kavanaugh stated, "Even though young Handel showed extraordinary musical talent as a child, his father refused for several years to permit him to take lessons" (27–28). The real reason for this prohibition may not truly be known, but there are a few possibilities. Perhaps Handel's father feared the life of a musician would be too hard for his son, or perhaps he also wanted his son to study law at university and be successful. Consequently, Handel continued through his childhood mostly deprived of music. However, at the age of eight or nine, Handel was playing a postlude at church, and the duke of Weissenfels heard him play (Smith & Carlson, 39). The duke then ordered Handel's father to allow him to have music lessons. His teacher was one of the best teachers in all of Germany, "energetic Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, who was organist at the Liebfrauenkirche" (Hogwood, 15). To have such an experienced teacher most likely contributed greatly to Handel's growth in music. Handel worked hard and in a few years, he completed his first composition and could even take the place of his teacher at the organ (Smith & Carlson, 40). He performed his first opera when he was nineteen, after which he went to Italy where so many talented artists and musicians had gone before him. He spent six years traveling through Italy and the surrounding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Comparison and Contrast of Classical Composers Handel and... Classical composers comparison and contrast: Handel versus Bach Handel and Bach are considered two of the greatest composers of all time. However, when comparing the output of these two musicians, the diversity manifest in music in the era when they wrote immediately becomes apparent. Handel, although he used religious subject matter, is usually characterized as fundamentally a 'secular' composer. He composed for the concert hall, not the church, and primarily as a result of royal commissions. His music is strident, powerful, and large in scope. It is designed to entertain, rather than to spur contemplation (The pure power of Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus', NPR, 2008). Bach, in contrast, often created music designed to be performed in sacred spaces. His music is more fluid and nuanced in style and designed more to spur contemplation and devotion rather than excite people's interest as a piece of entertainment. Handel's "Halleluiah Chorus" from the Messiah is one of the most famous pieces in all of Western classical music. The Chorus uses "the rhythm of the word hallelujah," to structure the piece, lengthening the first note, and creating a stirring 'explosion' of sound at the end (The pure power of Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus', NPR, 2008). The "King of Kings" passage is a single note, but by "repeating the passage in higher and higher registers...[e]ach one seems to be the highest you could possibly get," creating the "climax of the piece" (The pure power of Handel's ... Individuals according to Steven Handel believes that we implement "The Us vs. Them Mentality" by extension elaborates the mentality that individuals for instance, Americans, give people who are different than us through race, gender, age, nationality, culture, religion, or socioeconomic status. In his article, The Us vs. Them Mentality: How Group Thinking Can Irrationally Divide Us, Handel maintains that "We see it all the time in politics (Republicans vs. Democrats)" in other words these two groups act irrationally and uncooperative. Consequently this causes the two groups to be blind and fail to recognize other people's interests and values. Do we as American's also fail to recognize the interest or values of a terrorist or do we just assume that they are pure evil? I believe that we fail to recognize a terrorist interests and values. Handel When thinking of composers, whose works changed the world of music forever, many names may come to mind. Among those on that list, both Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel are figures whose effect on music has been felt worldwide. Born in the same year, these composers have much in common and many differences that illustrate their importance to their era and music as we see it today. Their individualism and creativity influenced much of their time and together, their works defined the Baroque Period as we know it today. His career includes 42 operas, 29 oratorios, 16 organ concerti, over 120 cantatas, trios and duets, chamber music, odes, and many ecumenical pieces, his most famous work being the Oratorio "Messiah." Composed in 1741, the oratorio was preformed first in Dublin in 1742. It had a scriptural text from the King James Bible and was written for modest vocal and instrumental forces. The work, although very much in the style of Handel, is a series of thoughts on the Christian idea of redemption and utilizes a mixture of traditions. After Handel's death in 1759, the Oratorio began to gain popularity even further and was adapted to larger scale choirs and orchestras. Handel has very much influenced the world of music, especially through his operas, and has grown in popularity throughout the years. As the inventor of English Oratorios and being so well known for his Italian operas his style and influence is felt around the world even still in the music of today. So where are the similarities between these two composers? Both being German and born in the same year, both excelled at organ and studied the music of German and Italian composers. Being masters at counterpoint, both exhibited similarities in their skills and styles. Aside from Bach's absence from opera, both composers had remarkable influence on nearly every contemporary genre. They both made huge impressions on keyboard pieces, being exceptionally skilled at organ. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1706, Handel travelled to Rome but at the time, the church had banned opera in some states so he wrote sacred music for the church. It was in 1707 and 1709 that Handel wrote his fifth opera Rodrigo and sixth opera Agrippina respectively. In 1710 on his way to London, after becoming Kapellmeister to Prince George, Handel wrote his 7th opera, Rinaldo which premiered in 1711 on the 24th of February (Schoelcher, 1857). Handel wrote Rinaldo within a fortnight with the directional aid of Aaron Hill who was the director of the Haymarket Theatre at the time. They performed the opera 15 nights in a row which back then, was a rare occurrence (Lang, 2012). These moments may have lead Handel to write the opera Rinaldo in 1711. George Fredric Handel's librettist for the opera Rinaldo was Aaron Hill but Giacomo Rossi translated it into Italian (Rodina, 2008). Rossi, has been "universally condemned as a miserable poetaster." However, the opera Rinaldo was Rossi's first libretto for Handel. Rossi does defend himself for the pace that he had to write the lyrics for the opera. "Mr. Hendel, the Orpheus of our century, while composing the music, scarcely gave me time to write, and to my great wonder I saw an entire opera put to music by that surprising genius, with the greatest degree of perfection..." Even though it is somewhat overplayed, the Water Music continues to be a very popular work of art. Unlike Bach's nearly complete focus on church music in Germany, Handel more openly embraced the French, Italian, and English secular music. Also unlike Bach, Handel did not come from a long line of musicians. When he was born on February 23, 1685, Handel's family had no idea that he would rise to a legendary status in music. Handel's father began to see his son's desire to compose at an early age and violently objected. His mother was responsible for nurturing and continuing his musical education. At the age of seven, Handel was asked to give an organ recital for the Duke of Sachse–Weissenfels. The Duke was very impressed and awarded the family with a generous amount of money. This event persuaded his father to allow Handel to pursue his musical career. When his father died in1697, Handel was freed from his father's will. He studied with numerous organists and gained minor fame. In 1703, he moved to Hamburg. There he met Telemann and began to have many of his works performed. He then traveled to Rome and numerous European capitals until he settled in England in 1714. Johann Sebastian Bach, like George Frideric Handel, was also born in Germany and was revered as one of the most famous composers who lived during his time. Both George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach were considered to be among the great musical pioneers of the Baroque musical era and, according to the text, Enjoyment of Music, are considered to be two of the giants of the baroque style of musical composition. Hallelujah Chorus, from Messiah, sets the tone of the composition by way of several quick exclamations making use of longer notes and a mixture of homophonic, monophonic and polyphonic musical textures, which all seem to change abruptly. The highlight of this piece culminates when all voices and instruments perform in unison. Wachet Auf, First Movement, utilizes an array of rising scales which seems indicative a forward procession which provides the kind of movement in which music in the baroque era was known for. Handel had started to experiment with oratorios in 1732, after the success of a ballad opera called the Beggars Opera by Johann Pepusch and John Gay. His own operas had declined in popularity, and operas were expensive and difficult to produce (Barber, and Donald). An oratorio was basically the same thing as an opera, except there were no expensive sets and costumes (Bonds). Handel composed Messiah from August 22 to September 14, 1741, a space of only 3 weeks. After finishing the oratorio, he put it away and started to work on another oratorio, Saul. It sat collecting dust for months, until Handel was invited to Ireland to visit the Duke of Devonshire in early November of 1741. After a rather disappointing opera season in 1740 and 1741, Handel was eager to get to Dublin. The libretto for Messiah was written by Charles Jennens (who also wrote the libretto for Saul) in the summer of 1741. It contained a compilation of verses from the bible; it didn't tell a story, but reflected on the life of Christ and the Christian message, which is why it is a popular performance with churches today (Barber, and Donald). Messiah contains a recitative, "He that dwelleth in heaven", and an aria, "Thou shalt not break them". In total Handel created altogether nine different versions of the work, and forty–three versions of the fifteen different solos. They both were masters of the Baroque music and wrote many pieces that are still part of the normal and required repertoire. However, Paul Henry Lang makes an argument against comparing these two composers together as well as an argument against the idea of Handel being a German national composer. Lang had extensive education in this field, and so he was able to argue these points with facts behind him. Paul Henry Lang was born in Hungary in 1901. He graduated from the Budapest Academy of Music in 1922, trained in musicology at both the University of Heidelberg and the Sorbonne in Paris, completed his doctoral dissertation at Cornell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This of course does not exhaust the genres they wrote. Lang believes that, while they often wrote in the same genres, it is unfair to compare them because of the differences in their purpose for writing music. Lang supports this by stating that out of the great works Handel produced only two of them, the Messiah and Theodora, are strictly from the Old Testament or the legends of antiquity. He states, "Yes, Bach 'sang' of Christ, all his life, but where did Handel?". So, while they wrote many of the same styles of works their subject matter was often quite different. This difference in subject matter quite possibly was due to their lives. Bach was primarily a church musician, and so he approached music with this mindset. Handel wrote music more for entertainment than for the church as previously stated. So it only makes sense that their music would have differences because of their purposes in writing the music and their geographical locations. I would like to interject here with a comment about Lang's articles. Lang led myself to believe that Handel traded his German identity for an English identity. However, Dr. Mr. Vaneman portrayed Handel in a very different light. He talked about Handel bringing the Opera to England and then English being excited and engaged by it. He spoke of Handel using his German knowledge to his advantage, rather than simply discarding the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The composers at this time usually did not specify dynamics on their pieces, they simply wrote "loud" or "soft." The most prominent element in Baroque music was rhythm and texture. Baroque's fast movement generally caused the feeling of rhythmic drive. Tempos were always constant. The least prominent element was melody. Gradual rise of tonality on the other hand was a great Baroque innovation. This is the major–minor system that is still used today in the twentieth century. Opera was one of the most important developments in the Baroque Era. It began in Florence in 1600. French operas featured more emphasis on the orchestra and chorus. During this time Handel invented the oratorio. An oratorio is a large work for soloists, chorus, and orchestra sung in concert format, without costumes or staging, in a concert hall rather than as part of a church service. Some other instrumentals formed during this era were: Concerto Grosso: in three movements, fast–slow–fast, and pits a large group of soloists against the larger string ensemble. Suite: a less formal structure consisting of several binary dance movements Fugue: Latin for "flight" or "chase," denotes a standard Baroque compositional process. Johann ... Handel And Handel 's Influence On Music Two of the greatest Baroque Era composers that still influence music to this day with their compositions are Johan Sebastian Bach and George Fredrick Handel. A majority of Bach's compositions were Cantatas and Passions. What made Handel's music rather different from Bach was the fact that he used simple harmonic progression. Bach's music was written with sudden surprising harmonic shifts and he also focused on adding extra ordinary chords throughout his works. Handel preferred using simple textures, by creating music with three different melodies that were to be played at once, while several other instruments were being played at the same time. • 61. Compare the lives and works of Bach and Handel Many musical scholars believe that J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel are the two most important, influential composers of the Baroque period. Both of these men were born in Germany in 1685, and since they came into existence around the same time, they share some similarities. As an introductory statement, Bach and Handel were born into two very different families. Handel did not come from a musical family; his father wanted him to study law. By age nine, his talent was too obvious for his father to ignore and Handel began to study with a local organist and composer. On the contrary, Bach came from a long line of musicians. Bach also had four sons which became gifted composers, in their own right. Bach, like Handel, also started as an organist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, Bach was a virtuoso on the organ. He also served as an organ consultant, and composer of organ works, like toccatas, chorale preludes, and fugues. Many of his works are said to have North German influences that were taught to Bach by Georg Bröhm. Bach also copied the works of many French and Italian composers in order to decipher their compositional languages. Later on, he arranged several violin concertos by Vivaldi for organ. Most experts of musical composition believe that the years, between 1708 and 1714, were his most productive. Within this period, he composed several preludes, fugues, and toccatas. During this span, Bach wrote the Little Organ Book, Orgelbüchlein. This book remains an unfinished collection of forty–nine short chorale preludes. Later on in his life, Bach composed the Orchestral Suite No.3 in D Major. This work's second movement was appropriately titled Air, because it was an aria for the orchestra. Bach wrote music for single instruments, duets, and small ensembles. Bach's works for solo instruments include the six sonatas and partitas for violin (BWV1001–1006), the six cello suites (BWV 1007–1012) and the partita for solo flute (BWV1013). His father was a well–to–do barber and surgeon that worked for the court of the Duke of Saxony (Charlton 82). • 65. Handel Goes Wild: Music Analysis In a recent phone interview with Christina Pluhar, founder and director of the early music ensemble L'arpeggiata, tells WOSU Radio that "for Handel, improvisation was extremely important, and for all musicians from that time, as well." This statement is clear in her new album Handel Goes Wild. Heavily influenced by jazz and latin rhythms, Pluhar takes some of Handel's famous works and interprets them in a new way with jazz harmonies and improvisations. Treatises from the baroque era attest that Handel and his contemporaries expected musicians and vocalists to improvise and add ornaments. This album follows that tradition but updates it to include influences of jazz and world music traditions. Although their use of ornaments may not conform with the baroque treatises, the idea of turning baroque music into jazz transforms the performer into a creator of fresh new music that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In their adaptation of Kapsberger's Canario, Pluhar takes improvisation to a completely jazz and world music style. Dancing to a rhythmic baroque guitar, the musical form of the piece invites individual instrumental solo improvisations including an electric Hammond organ. Further, the use of konnakol and percussion for solo improvisations takes authentic baroque performance practice outside the picture. The use of percussion for improvisation would not have been used during Kapsberger's time. Following this observation, it may be argued that Pluhar has gone too far into mixing different genres that the jazz– spirited recording can seem disjointed. L'Arpeggiata's attempt to revive Baroque ornamental fluidness through a contemporary improvisatory style seems ineffective when the audience takes this crossover album literally. The purpose of this album is not to attempt a revival of the baroque in the original style, but to create a new eyepiece where baroque music can be viewed through a contemporary ... The Triumph Of Love During Handel 's Giulio Cesare The Triumph of Love in Handel's Giulio Cesare An Examination of the Character Cleopatra Through Motive and Music In George Frideric Handel's masterful 18th century opera, Giulio Cesare, one may find many examples of the classic operatic archetype of power, particularly in relation to love and fear in how they are both tools that are oftentimes used to gain power. In this specific opera, Handel heralds the greater power–seizing potency of love when compared to its counterpart–– terror. In this essay, I plan to examine how the Egyptian character Cleopatra utilizes the power of love in order to achieve her own political and personal gains. I shall use text examples from the libretto to show how she triumphs over the darker forces of her enemies, Ptolemy and his great general named Achillas. In order to demonstrate the success that was achieved by Cleopatra in her quest to take power over Egypt as well as to take the hand of the Roman emperor, Julius Caesar, it is necessary to show exactly what kind of individual she was required to take power over–– namely the tyrannical emperor of Egypt named Ptolemy. Ptolemy also happened to be Cleopatra's brother. In the first act of the opera, Ptolemy has his general Achillas present Caesar with the disembodied head of Caesar's enemy–– Pompey. Caesar had originally planned on allowing Pompey to live as long as he asked for Caesar's pardon. This was at the request of Pompey's wife, Cornelia, and his son, Sextus, who both came to Caesar ...
