1. Management has very little so-called "spare"
time—just like you!
2. Management cannot easily make time to read a
long report, absorb key points, and make
connections to overall priorities and strategies.
3. Management often has different
communication and learning styles than those
found in staff, librarians, and systems folk.

5 Key Tips for: Talkingto Management
1. Use powerful vocabulary. Action verbs are more powerful than
other verbs. Avoid jargon—especially product names or systems
and library jargon. But do use their jargon.
2. Couch the message in terms that they care about. WIIFT—what's
in it for them?
3. Don't be defensive. You're not defending the library or
technology. You're building support for a vision and trying to
influence priorities. Frame rebuttals as requests for more
information.
4. Don't focus on money and budget increases or cuts. Focus on
priorities that connect to institutional mandates, objectives,
missions, and visions. Money follows priority strategies.
5. Focus on measurements, not statistics; impact, not effort;
outcomes, not processes. Money and strategy follow a
successful vision that engages.

Draw a relationship chart of the library and its constituent
users/groups. Who are the opinion leaders and connectors?
Build a CRM by searching key users’ profiles on the web
(Profiles, LinkedIn, FB, Twitter, etc.)
Start to develop your target list—book your top three

  • 24. Conversations and the Foundations for Talking to Management 1. Management has very little so-called "spare" time—just like you! 2. Management cannot easily make time to read a long report, absorb key points, and make connections to overall priorities and strategies. 3. Management often has different communication and learning styles than those found in staff, librarians, and systems folk. 25
  • 25. 5 Key Tips for: Talkingto Management 1. Use powerful vocabulary. Action verbs are more powerful than other verbs. Avoid jargon—especially product names or systems and library jargon. But do use their jargon. 2. Couch the message in terms that they care about. WIIFT—what's in it for them? 3. Don't be defensive. You're not defending the library or technology. You're building support for a vision and trying to influence priorities. Frame rebuttals as requests for more information. 4. Don't focus on money and budget increases or cuts. Focus on priorities that connect to institutional mandates, objectives, missions, and visions. Money follows priority strategies. 5. Focus on measurements, not statistics; impact, not effort; outcomes, not processes. Money and strategy follow a successful vision that engages. 26

  • 29. 30 Ensure you have a current organizational chart. Make a “real” one. Draw a relationship chart of the library and its constituent users/groups. Who are the opinion leaders and connectors? Build a CRM by searching key users’ profiles on the web (Profiles, LinkedIn, FB, Twitter, etc.) Start to develop your target list—book your top three coffee breaks this week!
