 Families are more important than just groups
of people related by blood, marriage or
adoption. They are more than statistics and
categories based on size, number of parents
and children, or marital status ..... This is
precisely why ‘family’ is a concept that is
slippery to grasp, a battleground for
    competing ideologies and loyalties.
From: Foreward by Don Edgar in Funder (1991)
                                        Images of Australian Families
                                      Longman Cheshire, Melbourne
 ‘What is family? The family is a social
construct, a set of ideas rather than
something ‘out there’, it is constantly
changing, and interpreted in many different
    ways by different people.’
                                                        Sargent (1994:105)
