The Battle of Midway took place from June 4-7, 1942 in the Central Pacific Ocean between American and Japanese naval forces. The Americans, led by Admiral Nimitz, had decoded Japanese plans to attack Midway Island and were waiting with aircraft carriers when the Japanese forces, led by Admiral Yamamoto, arrived. This resulted in a major victory for the Americans, as they sank four Japanese aircraft carriers at a cost of one American carrier, significantly weakening the Japanese navy and turning the tide in the Pacific theater of World War 2 in favor of the Allies.
