The aim of this project was to transform an Ordnance Survey Ireland NTF vector dataset into GeoTIFF rasters using FME. In the past OSI would have produced a 1:5000 raster tiles through old legacy software but now that software has reached end of life and is no longer supported. As part of FME 2014, FME and Mapnik have been brought together to create the MapnikRasterizer which was perfect timing for the OSi.

Slides for my talk at Architecture IO 2014 in London. Watch it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjA98jhz1KY In recent years more and more data about the city is digitally collected. This data from sources such as mobile phones, sensors, and location-based services can be visualised to reflect urban activity. Usable and approachable geovisualisations allow casual users and experts alike to make sense of this data, to see the city in different perspectives, and to understand their environment. In my talk, I explore the challenges in urban data visualisation, as well as showcase multiple projects that demonstrate current approaches to and new thinkings about urban mobility.

Since already 15 years Switzerland has been establishing its Swiss Federal Spatial Data Infrastructure (FSDI). The Swiss FSDI evolved from an infrastructure project to a prioritized eGovernment pillar covering all administrative levels. Policy making, establishment of a legal framework and a paradigm shift from data to service provision (including metadata, data models, infrastructure) were key milestones. geo.admin.ch is the implementation and the portal to the Swiss FSDI according to the Swiss Federal Act on Geoinformation. In 2012 geo.admin.ch has won the 2012 United Nations Public Service Award, 2nd place, in the category of “Advancing Knowledge Management in Government” which rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide. FSDI customers benefit from a very performant and very flexible spatial data infrastructure. Thanks to the flexible underlying cloud infrastructure it was possible for the Swiss Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) to handle the steady growth of the web traffic, which has doubled every year since 2008. This could be achieved by a novel combination of an open source software framework with an innovative cloud computing architecture resulting in an attractive cost/benefit ratio. A major economic benefit can be achieved with the establishment of geo.admin.ch in Switzerland. Some Federal administration benefits for decision-making, planning and improving efficiency of governmental processes are that data production can be accelerated and data exchange processes simplified. Other major achievements are leveraging open access, open standards, open source software, mobile support, map viewer user interface, mashups and API for all and, last but not least, scalability and agility on the infrastructure level thanks to cloud computing.

Abstract: The arrival of web-based mapping from Google and others has revolutionised, in the space of only five years, the way many people interact with maps and map data. And the success of projects such as Wikipedia highlight how collation of small amounts of information from large numbers of people - an approach called 'crowdsourcing' - can challenge traditional models of data collection and ownership. Bringing these concepts together is OpenStreetMap, a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world. Well-established enterprises such as the Ordnance Survey are coming under increased pressure from this new model, and large companies such as MapQuest and Microsoft are starting to use and invest in it. Martin Lucas-Smith, Webmaster in the Department, and one of two main developers of the leading UK-wide cycle journey planner website, CycleStreets, will discuss OpenStreetMap, its use within a wide range of systems (from cartography, routing, and even its central role helping deal with the Haiti disaster) and discuss the challenges it poses to traditional forms of cartography and data collection.

Presented at the 46th Society of Cartographers Summer School in Manchester on September 10 2010. The abstract for the talk was as follows: "OpenStreetMap is coming of age, but as it starts to be used more in the mainstream, the age-old questions of quality and completeness are coming to the fore. A range of data sources have been used to build up the map in the UK, from GPS traces to aerial imagery, historic mapping, NaPTAN and the OS Open Data release, each with their own benefits and limitations. This talk looks at a number of studies and tools developed to quantify, compare and address accuracy and coverage of the project in the UK, in an attempt to answer the key questions - is it complete yet and just how good is it?"

Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.

Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
