6. Shooter Shooter’s teaser trailer seems to carry all the conventions that our production desires, the plot of the story is clearly defined in the trailer and the mystery created by the trailer which attracts the audience into going to watch this film. The government conspiracy theory, is what I would call a sub-genre, to the action thriller genre is always a very popular choice to audiences. The best parts of the trailer is the shots, mostly all of them are short duration, but close-ups of characters in the film, shows us their expressions and feelings, and this gives the audience the tense feeling and makes us feel like we are in the film ourselves. Also when you see the dog grabbing the beer bottle out of the fridge this is a typical American representation that this bloke is so good his trained his own dog to get his beers out of the fridge for him! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogb72h4vYKU
7. L.A. Confidential The trailer for L.A. confidential was a very interesting one to observe. The use of a variety of shots and lines from the film itself, and also a voiceover informing the audience of the plot. The plot drags the audience in and me as a viewer the trailer made me want to go watch the film, also I noticed towards the end of the trailer the voiceover tells the audience some of the cast and at this point the pace of the shots and the music slows down which I think is a very good effect to use on the audience, also at this points the shots are slightly blurred which represents mystery and confusion which the film is very much all about. And the soundtrack matches the genre of the film, I think we can take assets from this trailer and use this to make our teaser as good as it can be. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT7aFLAS4ZI
8. Taken The trailer for taken is a very powerful one, the use of shots, and music and soundtrack put together is excellently put together, even from the first shot you have an idea what could happen in the film. Also the last shot of the trailer with just Liam Neeson’s name on a black background but the sound was outstanding, the panting of a young girl and then a heartbeat adds so much tension to that trailer alone and make the audience want to find out what happens to the daughter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvUxdQ4q-Lg
9. State of play State of play’s teaser trailer was a real good example of a conspiracy thriller trailer, which is what we want to produce for our production. It has excellent conventions, the storyline was put out very well to the audience. My favourite part of the trailer was at the end when you hear Russell Crowe state: ‘This is as big and as connected as they get’ the audience automatically know that the film is based on conspiracy and leaves the audience on a cliff hanger, because as a viewer you automatically ask yourself what happens in the end of this film. This is the USP of the trailer and is very effective to dragging viewers in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fxfvkv3rMyg
10. Se7en The trailer for seven, which is a crime, mystery thriller, is an excellent trailer that carriers all the conventions needed to draw the audience in. The storyline is portrayed through the trailer with the typical American voiceover. There’s a very good variety of shot types and the length of shots, and dialogue used from the film is very effective, especially the last part when Brad pitt questions Morgan freeman. This was the selling point of the trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4YV2_TcCoE
11. 2012 The trailer for 2012 is a very powerful trailer for the observing audience to watch, it has all the major conventions a disaster movie needs. The fact that you are told that the film is from the director of “Independence Day” and “the Day after tomorrow” you as an audience automatically know that there's going to be explosions and the world blowing up left right and centre. This already drags us in as an audience. And epic special effects are being shown to the audience and this exited me as a viewer, because you know that there will be lots of. The variety of shots and the shot changes are very good and effective. Also we see iconic monuments collapsing which makes us feel that there is a worlds end and a sense of tension is created. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz86TsGx3fc
12. MR. AND MRS. SMITH Mr and Mrs. Smith and action comedy, had a very intense trailer with lots of action shown to the audience between the couple and hints that there is a lot of comedy in the film is evident. Just from a shot when you see them having a shoot out, Angelina Jolie calls ‘you still alive baby’ to Brad Pitt. Even after shooting at each other there is still humour shown to the audience which makes it a very attracting film for the audience to watch and this mad me as a viewer want to watch it and this technique was a good USP. Also the variety of shot changes and the quick shot changes made a good effect and fitted in with the soundtrack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuW-UKadvNY
13. J.F.K. (1991), was a very good trailer to take conventions of good conspiracy thriller trailer to watch, tells us as an audience the plot which is put out through the trailer but not all at once. The quick transitions from black and white to coloured shots is very good as it shows we are looking at the past. Then we see many people being asked questions buy a policeman, but everyone is saying the same thing, the and iconic scene is seen in black and white and as an audience you can see that it was the video of J.F.K. before his assassination. Also you see black on white some think being drawn out buy a close up shot which is effective as you know that it’s eventually writing out J.F.K. Also when actually see J.F.K. and then a gunshot and a red background, which represents death so we know that it is on J.F.K.’s assassination, and then a very powerful phrase is written underneath. ‘The story that wont go away’ which is the USP of this trailer and this trailer is very much an excellent example of the kind of teaser trailer we want to produce. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSJDulXAK3k J.F.K. (1991)
14. Paranormal Activity Paranormal activity was a spin chilling trailer, in a very short amount of time a story line is portrayed. It gives us, the audience clues about the film in general, which looks like a lot of it is set in a room, a documentary/film is very effective as this leaves the audience in true belief of what they have seen, a very effective technique is when the couple are in the room, with the timer in the bottom corner, which tells us that what happens is real life, which frightens the audience, also when the title of the film is shown at the end of the trailer with ‘activity’ reversing with the typical sci-fi sound, also the low key lighting use is very effective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_UxLEqd074&feature=related
15. The short trailer for James Bond ‘Quantum Of Solace, carries all of the conventions of a James bond trailer you would expect there to be, The short shots of all the scenes you would want to see in a bond film e.g. Car chase, in bed with a bond girl, speaking to M, a boat chase etc. The Bond soundtrack and the fast chopping and changing of shots and the variation of shots is exceptional. Also my favourite part of the trailer is the final establishing shot with bond coming over the horizon with a gun in his hand with the ‘007’ form with the ‘quantum of Solace’ appear around the 007, with the two ‘O’s of the title of the film forming the ’00’ part of ‘007’ which I think was fantastically crafted as you can see this effect on the poster next to this text. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfGJJ1cxtZs
16. Terminator Salvation has a very effective trailer, with a rapid variation of shots and explosions has a very and special effects used were very good, my favourite part is at the end of the trailer when it states the end begins, which is definitely the USP for the audience , as this makes us want to go and watch the ‘end of the beginning’, the voiceover is also very effective, and Christian Bale’s voice fits into the genre and the situation of the film very well in my opinion. Also the very last part when you see the last shot with the iconic terminator head with the fiery eyes and the face makes out the city of L.A. Which was a fantastic effect and plays on the audiences mind, this shot is shown on the poster to the right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIjiKj-sOp8
