Hello, I need answers for those multiple questions. It is for P hilosophy Intro to Ethics. It must be done in one hour. You must be an expert in philosophy. I need all them correct, The area of ethics known as "meta-ethics" is concerned with: The thought of Socrates The thought of Plato The consequences of ethical decisions The questions that may need to be answered before talking about issues of right and wrong. Plato's "Republic" is a dialogue between various characters. The character who defends the view that moral action is doing what is in the best interest of those with less power is: Socrates Plato Thrasymachus Aristotle Which of the following was NOT one of the positions on human nature that we examined in these modules? That human nature is basically good That human nature is basically bad That human nature can be partiallly explained in terms of animal nature That "human nature" is an indefinable concept Why is the study of human nature so significant to ethics? Because... ...if we had no nature at all, then only God's divine law would prevail ...if we could determine what our nature was, then we would know what was best for us ...if we could determine whether human nature was basically good or bad, then we could jettison all ethical theory ...if we determine that there are too many competing theories of human nature, then living in society becomes impossible For Aristotle, being virtuous is not about doing the right acts and avoiding the wrong ones, but rather ethics is about subordinating women to men's wishes ethics is about caring for each other ethics is about obeying one's superiors ethics is about a state of being, namely being virtuous For Thomas Hobbes, morality comes from the "right of Nature," which is our right to what? To self-preservation To revolution against an unfair government To property To take as many resources as we can defend Which human trait does Rousseau think that we would be lost without, and which is the basis of "laws, moral habits, and virtues"? Rationality Empathy Pity Self-interest David Hume and Immanuel Kant agree on which one of the following four propositions? Morality is based in our sympathy for other human beings Morality is an expression of duties that we have regardless of our emotions or desires. What is viewed as moral or immoral is relative to different cultures The demands of morality are not about achieving our own self-interest What is cultural relativism? The view that there are important differences in ethical beliefs and practices across cultures The view that because there are important differences in ethical beliefs and practices across cultures, there cannot be any universally true moral principles The view that because there are important differences in ethical beliefs and practices across cultures, what each culture believes is right is right for that culture, even if other cultures differ The view that ther ...

The Biological Basis of Morality Do we invent our moral absolutes in order to make society workable? Or are these enduring principles expressed to us by some transcendent or Godlike authority? Efforts to resolve this conundrum have perplexed, sometimes inflamed, our best minds for centuries, but the natural sciences are telling us more and more about the choices we make and our reasons for making them · · · · · · · · EDWARD O. WILSON · APRIL 1998 ISSUE CENTURIES of debate on the origin of ethics come down to this: Either ethical principles, such as justice and human rights, are independent of human experience, or they are human inventions. The distinction is more than an exercise for academic philosophers. The choice between these two understandings makes all the difference in the way we view ourselves as a species. It measures the authority of religion, and it determines the conduct of moral reasoning. The two assumptions in competition are like islands in a sea of chaos, as different as life and death, matter and the void. One cannot learn which is correct by pure logic; the answer will eventually be reached through an accumulation of objective evidence. Moral reasoning, I believe, is at every level intrinsically consilient with -- compatible with, intertwined with -- the natural sciences. (I use a form of the word "consilience" -- literally a "jumping together" of knowledge as a result of the linking of facts and fact-based theory across disciplines to create a common groundwork of explanation -- because its rarity has preserved its precision.) Every thoughtful person has an opinion on which premise is correct. But the split is not, as popularly supposed, between religious believers and secularists. It is between transcendentalists, who think that moral guidelines exist outside the human mind, and empiricists, who think them contrivances of the mind. In simplest terms, the options are as follows: I believe in the independence of moral values, whether from God or not, and I believe that moral values come from human beings alone, whether or not God exists. Theologians and philosophers have almost always focused on transcendentalism as the means to validate ethics. They seek the grail of natural law, which comprises freestanding principles of moral conduct immune to doubt and compromise. Christian theologians, following Saint Thomas Aquinas's reasoning in Summa Theologiae, by and large consider natural law to be an expression of God's will. In this view, human beings have an obligation to discover the law by diligent reasoning and to weave it into the routine of their daily lives. Secular philosophers of a transcendental bent may seem to be radically different from theologians, but they are actually quite similar, at least in moral reasoning. They tend to view natural law as a set of principles so powerful, whatever their origin, as to be self-evident to any rational person. In short, transcendental views are fundamentally t ...

9.5 Moral Theories All moral claims are grounded in some moral theory. It is the nature of such claims that they are based on a system of beliefs about what is right and wrong, just and unjust. The table below lists a handful of the moral theories you are most likely to encounter in ethical arguments today. It’s important to note that each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. Moral theories give you general guidelines, but you still usually have to apply moral reasoning in individual cases to test them out. For example, none of these theories explicitly claim that killing is wrong. The theories are more about how you would ground your claim that killing is wrong. Moral theories are also not mutually exclusive. The argument that killing is wrong could be grounded in all of these theories. Whether they know it or not, everyone has a moral theory. It is inescapable. Even if their moral theory is that there are no morals, that still represents a moral theory. But not all moral theories are equal—some hold up to critical thinking better than others. You may see wisdom in all of these perspectives, or you may strongly identify with a single one. Regardless, it's important for you to recognize the potential weaknesses in any moral theory you favor, and it's helpful for you to understand why others find legitimacy in the moral theories they employ. Theory Criticisms Kantian Ethics · Immanuel Kant put forth the categorical imperative, which states that you should only act on moral principles that you would be willing to turn into universal laws mandating that everyone act the same way. · This is a version of the question, “How would you like it if everyone did that?” Any two people who want to get married should be able to. · This theory is so absolute that it sometimes goes against moral common sense. It’s wrong to kiss my spouse because I would not like it if everyone kissed my spouse. Utilitarianism · The morally right course of action is the one that will produce the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people. · The only thing that matters is the consequences of the action, not the intentions behind the action (the ends justify the means). · Ignores people’s rights, duties, and intentions. · Could be used to justify an act that most would consider morally wrong because it inflicts harm on one person unjustly, even if it brings great happiness to many others. It’s okay to steal money from my neighbor and take my family on a vacation, because then my whole family would be happy, and only my neighbor would be harmed. Ethical Egoism · Doing whatever is best for your own interests or would make you happy. · This is not necessarily the same thing as doing whatever you want in the moment, because that might not be in your best interests in the long term. · Can be used to justify terrible actions. Ethical Altruism · Doing whatever is best for others or would bring the greatest amount of happiness to people besides yourself. · Some.

Social Justice as a Form of Discourse Impacting Identity for Action By Philip S. Mirci, Ph.D. (2015)Introduction Richard Paul (1992) wrote: Because we do not come to our experience with a blank slate for a mind, because our thinking is already, at any given moment, moving in a direction, because we can form new ideas, beliefs, and patterns of thought only through the scaffolding of our previously formed thought, it is essential that we learn to think critically in environments in which a variety of competing ideas are taken seriously. … Knowledge is discovered by thinking, analyzed by thinking, organized by thinking, transformed by thinking… There is no way to take the thinking out of knowledge, or the struggle out of thinking, just as there is no way to create a neat and tidy step-by-step path to knowledge that all minds can mindlessly follow … But thinking requires counter-thinking, opposition and challenge, as well as support. We need reasons meaningful to us, some persuasive logic, to move our minds from one set of ideas or beliefs to another. In other words, we must “argue” ourselves out of our present thinking and into thinking that is more or less novel to us if we are to gain genuine knowledge [Critical thinking: what every person needs to survive in a rapidly changing world. Santa Rosa, CA: The Foundation for Critical Thinking, p. xi]. The search for truth and knowledge is one of the finest attributes of man ― though often it is most loudly voiced by those who strive for it the least. The world we have made as a result of the level of thinking we have done thus far creates problems that cannot be solved at the same level of thinking at which we created them. Constructivism, as a learning theory, was consistent with neuroscience research: the brain makes sense of experience by accessing its own existing knowledge base in order to interpret that experience. Furthermore, one’s identity is connected to this sense-making process. Thus, one’s own knowledge about self, others, and the world is limited. Intellectual humility is the discipline of bringing this awareness to different methods of knowing. Stephen Freeman (2000) summarized three different methods of knowing that were first stated by Charles Peirce in 1940: The first method of knowing, the method of tenacity, states that people hold firm to truths they “know” are true. In establishing these truths there may be a tendency to omit evidence that does not support our beliefs and to find and include that, which does. This represents the well-known problem of objectivity. Frequent repetition or re-indoctrination of these assumptions or truths enhances their validity. This, simply stated, means one finds what one looks for… The second method of knowing is the method of authority or established belief. This method has the weight of tradition and public sanction behind it. Many of the things we think we know have been handed down by tradition. People have also .

Consider the different developmental theories discussed in this chapter. What theory do you find most interesting? Most challenging? Most useful to your work as a human service professional? Explain why you feel this way and how you plan to use these concepts to support your clients. Psychology is defined as the science of mind and behavior. Human psychological development involves personality, cognition, emotion, and self-concept. Each child develops into a unique entity with individual strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, however, some principles and processes apply to the psychological development of all people. Likewise, virtually everyone is subject to similar psychological feelings and reactions that affect their behavior. This example portrays two schoolboys discussing their current academic careers. Numerous psychological concepts and variables are affecting even this simple interaction. The boys are addressing their own and their peers’ ability to learn and achieve. Learning is easier for some children and more difficult for others. Personality characteristics also come into play. Some children are more dominant and aggressive. Others are more passive. Some young people are more motivated to achieve and win. Others are less interested and enthusiastic. Finally, some children feel good about themselves, and others have poor self-concepts. A Perspective Psychological variables interact with biological and social factors to affect an individual’s situation and behavior. Their interaction influences the potential courses of action available to a person at any point in time. This chapter will focus on some of the psychological concepts that critically impact children as they grow up. There are four major thrusts. The first presents a perspective on how personalities develop. The second provides a basic understanding of how children think and learn. The third focuses on emotion, and the fourth on self-concept. Learning Objectives This chapter will: A. Summarize prominent psychological theories concerning personality development, including psychodynamic, neo-Freudian psychoanalytic, behavioral, phenomenological, and feminist theories. B. Suggest a procedure for evaluating theory and discuss some concepts useful in enhancing sensitivity to human diversity when doing so. C. Examine Piaget’s theory of cognitive development and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of cognitive development. D. Describe the concept of emotion and investigate the development of temperament and attachment. E. Discuss self-concept and self-esteem. F. Examine the concepts of intelligence and intelligence testing, emphasizing the potential cultural and other biases involved. G. Explore cognitive disabilities (mental retardation), learning disabilities, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, their effects on children, and current macro system responses.Theories of Psychological Development How many times have you heard someone make statements such as the f.

This system could be derived from a number of factors: religion, culture, and upbringing. It is difficult enough to determine what an individual s morals are, but going further to determine how we came to possess those morals is even more ambitious. Still, regardless of its difficulty, this subject consumes many philosophers and psychologists. One such moral psychologists, Jonathan Haidt, is theorizing the possibility of evolution causing ones morality. Haidt is a moral psychologist at the Universtiy of Virgina further believes that complex social structures such as religion and politics as well as our need for social structures affect...show more content...One is the ancient system, a system that developed before humans could speak. This system drives our emotions. It is with this system that humans received their instinctual reactions to specific situations; it is these sorts of gut reactions that enabled human survival in ancient times. The other is a modern system, a system that initiated when language was invented. This system, he explains, is more associated with our ability to reason and judge. This system allows us to question our instinctual reactions and determine some explanation as to why we feel a particular way. However, he feels that these two complex systems are subconsciously active within the individual; he does not believe that people are aware of these concepts affecting their morality. These two systems are the key or answer to why moral dumbfounding occurs. It occurs when the two systems conflictwhen reasoning cannot explain
