2. Nancy asks…
What commodities are used as currency or a medium of exchange
other than money?
Example: Prison and cigarettes
It would be really helpful someone can give me 2 or 3 answers to this question.
Steve Winston answers:
Often the things used have intrinsic value. They must be rare or difficult to obtain. In the
highlands of Papua New Guinea, sea shells are often used. These would not be used on the
coast as to get some "money" all you would have to do is go for a short walk along the beach.
You would have to look at traditional societies with little or no contact with modern man.
In Australia, two hundred years ago, rum was used as a currency.
Shark teth havs also been used by other societies.

3. Mandy asks…
What commodities are used as a currency or a medium of
exchange rather than money?
Example: Prison and cigarettes
It would be really helpful someone can give me 2 or 3 answers to this question.
Steve Winston answers:
There are many things that a person can use for currency; food, animals, labor, sexual favors, if
it's desired then it can be used for any type of exchange. There are many cases in which a
family will allow a guest to stay within their house in exchange for the guest's labor in, house
work, occupational assistance or personal endeavors. It depends on the terms of trade and how
much value the people put on certain things.
