different
• Something about the future
• Your Questions

West Yorkshire Police
19. 19. The role of the new PCC
• Setting the strategic direction and accountability for policing
• Being accountable to the electorate.
• Setting strategic policing priorities.
• Holding the force to account through the Chief Constable, and consulting and
involving the public.
• Working with partners to prevent and tackle crime
• Ensuring that the police respond effectively to public concerns and threats to
public safety.
• Promoting and enabling joined-up working on community safety.
• Increasing public confidence in how crime is cut and policing delivered.
• Invoking the voice of the public, the vulnerable and victims
• Ensuring that public priorities are acted upon and that the most vulnerable
individuals are not overlooked. Complying with the general equality duty under
the Equality Act 2010.
• Contributing to resourcing of policing response to regional and national threats
• Ensuring an effective policing contribution, alongside other partners, to national
arrangements to protect the public from other cross-boundary threats in line with
the Strategic Policing Requirement.
• Ensuring value for money Being responsible for the distribution of policing grants
from central government and setting the police precept raised through Council
Tax.
• Commissioning services from partners that will contribute to cutting crime.
20. 20. An outline of issues for me as Chief
Our Future
• What should it be
• What shouldn’t it be
• Learning and development
• Experience
• Commitment
21. 21. Some of the questions asked
• With the closure of police stations how will you maintain the
confidence of the public?
• As chief constable you have responsibility for the direction of
Cumbria police. What will you do if a Commissioner is elected
and wants to take the force in a different direction?
• Is amalgamation with Lancashire still an option for the future?
• Why can't specials be taser or PSU trained if they have the
same powers as a regular officer?
• The armed forces directly recruit at officer level. What is your
opinion on this being introduced for the police service (i.e.
Inspector level)?
22. 22. Some more of the questions
• The recent Police budget cuts would significantly reduce
available resources for Cumbria Constabulary. How does the
Chief Constable decide on which resources are to be effected
and to what extent? Following that how will Cumbria
Constabulary continue to lower crime figures?
• What is the hardest challenge the force faces today? How
does the Chief Constable deal with it?
• The CPS are targeted on successful convictions and are
unlikely to take a case to court if there is any doubt in it
resulting in conviction. This in my opinion is a great barrier to
bringing offenders to justice and may result in many offenders
walking free. How does Cumbria Constabulary deal with this
issue? (Law Abiding Citizen)
23. 23. Final Thanks for a great discussion
