Korean Language
●
Korean is the language spoken in the Korean Peninsula
of Northeast Asia
– It is spoken by about 77 million people
– It is the official and national language of both Koreas: North Korea
and South Korea

As a Linux Newbie
●
16 years ago, When I first started Linux, they looked up
Korean Linux Document on the KLDP( 한국어 리눅스 문서화
프로젝트 , Korean Linux Documentation Project) site
– (Currently, It is rarely used by Korean Linux Users)
– Site: https://kldp.org/
●
14 years ago, I found the Korean threads on KLDP
– ttf-alee 11 업로드 (upload) https://kldp.org/node/74311
– " 구슬체 " 에서 한자대신 한글이 출력되는 문제 (The problem: Hangul
is printed form "Guseul" font instead of Hanja"
https://kldp.org/node/89240
9. 9
As a Linux Newbie
●
Some Korean thread’s some problems on KLDP
– Some FLOSS Korean developers ignore Hanja( 한자 / 漢字 ,
Chinese characters) issues
– One FLOSS Korean developer made the Hanja problem on
font(“Guseol” font)
– The Korean font developer insists, “Hanja is not Korean
Language” and change hanja to Korean hanja sound
●
ex) 漢字 → 한자
10. 10
As a Linux Newbie
●
“Guseul” font’s Hanja
issue on KLDP ( 15 years
ago)
– Strongly Problematic
●
Ideographs and Korean Hanja
sound cannot be mapped 1:1
ex) 樂– 4 Sounds
악 ak 낙 nak 락 rak 요 yo
●
There is a problem that
characters cannot be properly
expressed When Chinese &
Japanese strings appear

As a Linux Newbie
●
Ubuntu Korea’s libHWP Incident (2013)
– Korean Open Source developer has already developed HWP open
source library (libHWP)
– One member copied HWP open source library, and he lied that he
developed the HWP library himself had developed the HWP library
– As a result, HWP open source library was closed & destroyed
– It shows the problem of the FLOSS community’s responsibility

When I contributed to some FLOSS projects (such as,

– I’m curious about the development of Ideographs( 漢字 / 字汉 ,
한자 , かんじ ) processing in East Asian languages such as
Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese
– So, I have participated in a variety of FLOSS conferences in East
Asia regions (such as Japan, Mainland China, Taiwan, etc)

know exactly about North Korea’s situation though)
– North Korean developers seem to be using FLOSS projects
because of trade sanctions.
