A History Of Abundance
America is a country which has a great
abundance.
Sometimes, America has been criticized
as a “throw-away” country.
This abundance is a gift of nature.
The nature wasn‟t the only reason why
many immigrant come to this country.
America became one of the
wealthiest countries today
because of a man
named Tocqueville. He said
that the wealthy took these
things for granted and placed
little importance or material
things. The poor people in
those aristocratic nations also
did not concern themselves
with wealth, since they knew
that they had little hope of
becoming wealthy or
changing their status.
From Producers to Consumers
 In the 1970s and 1800s, most Americans were farmers
and factory workers. So they thought of themselves as
producers.
 But with the invention of advertising by radio and TVs
in the 1920s and „50s, the overall business increased
rapidly and by that they became more of a consumer.
 And today, the American economy depends on
consumerism.
What Consumers American
Like?
The American people have to rely on four
things:
1. comfort,
2. cleanliness,
3. novelty,
4. convenience.
An Abundance Of
Technology→ First technology has changed
television viewing habits by the
development of satellite TV
→ The result is that the viewing
audience is more fragmented,
with a smaller percentage
watching any given programs.
→ The technology revolution is
changing now Americans get
both entertainment and
information.
Challenges of The
Technological Revolution
The merging of technology providers
 The effect of all this technology on
children
 the quality of what children are watching
on TV and what they are seeing on the
internet
The Ever-Expanding Pie
• They viewed the material wealth of the United
States as an ever-expanding pie.
• American believed that their economic pie
would just continue to grow so that all people
could get a bigger piece of a bigger pie.
• The belief in an everlasting heritage of
abundance had many good effects.
.. or The Decline of American
Abundance?
• Over the last few decades the American
economic has had it ups and downs.
• In 1980s and 1990s bought a general turn
around in the economy, the poor got pooer
and the rich got richer.
• They could not live out from the American
dream.
What of The Future?
• It is uncertain about the American economic future. One
thing is certain that the American tradition of abundance has
had a profound effect on the lifestyle and the American
value.
• Possitive side effect : less wasteful more potective of their
environment.
• Negative side effect : the old habits are hard to change.
• The traditional American values will remain strong in
coming decades or undergo basic changes is impossible to
predict, only time will tell.
