2. History
In 1971, a small team of activists set sail from Vancouver,
Canada to bear witness to US underground nuclear
testing at Amchitka, Alaska, which is one of the world's
most earthquake-prone regions. The journey sparked a
flurry of public interest.
The voice had been heard. Nuclear testing on Amchitka
ended that same year, and the island was later declared
a bird sanctuary.

Today, Greenpeace is an international organization that
prioritizes global environmental campaigns.
Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Greenpeace has
2.8 million supporters worldwide, and national as well as
regional offices in 41 countries.

4. Mission of Green Peace International
- Catalyzing an energy revolution to address the number
one threat facing our planet: climate change.
-Defending our oceans by challenging wasteful and
destructive fishing, and creating a global network of
marine reserves.
- Protecting the world’s remaining ancient forests which
are depended on by many animals, plants and people .

- Working for disarmament and peace by reducing
dependence on finite resources and calling for the
elimination of all nuclear weapons.
- Creating a toxic free future with safer alternatives to
hazardous chemicals in today's products and
manufacturing.
- Campaigning for sustainable agriculture by encouraging
socially and ecologically responsible farming practices.

6. Recent Activities of Greenpeace
- The Great Bear Rainforest protection agreement comes
into force in Canada. This was one of Green peace's
longest running campaigns for protecting an area half the
size of Switzerland from logging.
- After a six-month long “Quit Coal” campaign by
Greenpeace, the Greek Minister of Development states that
the government is not considering coal or nuclear power as
part of Greece's energy future

- Electronics giant Philips bows to pressure from
Greenpeace and consumers and becomes a leader in
environmentally friendly take-back policies for electronic
waste.
- Greenpeace volunteers and local forest communities
have halted the destruction of an area of swamp forest in
Sumatra, Indonesia. These swamps were to be converted
to commercial palm oil plantations.

8. Activities in India
- Smart Farming Dialogue Series Launched in Punjab
‘Smart Farming’, a forum convened by Greenpeace India
launched a dialogue series titled ‘Smart dialogues’ to
discuss smart and sustainable farming solutions with a
vision to ensure food security in India.
- IT Sector slow in demonstrating climate leadership
Despite having a massive capacity to cut greenhouse gas
emissions the IT industry is not yet delivering on its
potential according to the first results of the Green peace's
Cool IT Challenge
