Leveraging Opportunities for Women to Lead
• What has changed?
• How does it impact the way Businesses are Run?
• Upcoming corporate world / workplaces?
• What does it mean for men and women at work?
4
Gender diversity is not a favor you bestow on
women folk; it is what progressive enterprises
celebrate as a gift to themselves.

Technology at this time in history
• The main characteristic of technology in the current economic phase is
that it is providing virtualization.
• Technology is creating, adding, unlocking, and exploring newer
dimensions of being human.
• As technology acquires more capability, and is even becoming more
“intelligent”, it is creating newer dimensions and frontiers of well-being.
• We need to enlist technology in ways to better understand the needs and
dreams of other people, as a basis for providing more effective services.
• Humans, social systems, and technologies exist in mutually co-sustaining
relationships.

People are available to each other 24x78
Everyone Connected, Everywhere, Everytime..
(Billions of people online – not fiction but fact)
Everybody can publish,
search, collaborate and
become a celebrity
quickly
• Globalization and the Internet gave customers real
choices, access to instant reliable information and
the ability to communicate with each other.
• Power in shifted from seller to buyer.
• Customers insist “better, cheaper, quicker and
smaller,” along with “more convenient, reliable and
personalized.” : My Way !
Steve Denning, The Management Revolution That's Already Happening/ Forbes.com 30th May 2013
How the Customer became a king?
9
What on earth is happening to management?
• The sacred goal of maximizing shareholder value is now “the dumbest
idea in the world”.
• The “essence of strategy” seen as “coping with competitors” is obsolete.
• The uni-directional value chain —the very core of 20th Century
management thinking—is now a problem, not a solution.
• Supposed distinctions between leaders and managers have collapsed.
• Plethora of recent management books suggest that today’s organizations
represent a failure so deep and pervasive that there are hardly words
to describe it.

Characteristics of New Workforce
• Employment is moving to knowledge workers who
resist command & control.
• Organizations run more like a symphony/ orchestra
composed mainly of specialists.
• The specialists are more at the bottom who direct
their own work and matter a lot !
The greatest challenge we face is that the
very nature of innovation itself is
changing… the basis of innovation is less
focused on things, and more on ideas,
collaboration and expertise.”
-Sam Palmisano, Former Chairman and CEO, IBM
13
Organizations are awakening to the
understanding..
• People are not inventory
• People are not the product
• People are processors, co-producing/creating business
value with the client
• People are intelligent collaborating agents who seek to
maximize value
ALL people in the ecosystem, not just employees

Facebook ?
3 April 2014
WhatsApp touches record daily high of 64 billion messages in 24 hours :
Witnessed a temporary disruption in service
What is happening?
• The technology/ automation began to erode jobs that
required physical strength – the job market started
changing and the “people skills” became more valuable.
• The lasting professions became what a robot could not
easily do!
• Feminine attributes – empathy, patience, communal
problem solving began to replace the top-down
autocratic model of leadership and success.

A Respectful Workplace
17
http://www.joegerstandt.com/resources.php
Meaningful work aligned with MY sense of purpose is a key driver
18
Many people leave their job
not because
there is a strong reason to leave,
but because
there is no compelling reason to
stay.
19
Attributes Perceived by the Society
Masculine values
• Aggression
• Control & ruthless
• Dictatorship
• Dominance
• Reaching the top
Feminine values
• Encouraging team work
• Collaboration
• Interdependence
• Patience, caring, Nurturing
• Execution Excellence
20
Sense of Self..
• A man’s sense of self is
defined by his
ability to achieve results.
• A woman’s sense of self is
defined through her feelings
and quality of her relationships.
Overcoming Challenges …
• It is not enough to ask for a woman’s equality vis-
à-vis the men in the society/community.
• It does not take a woman very far even if she
becomes equal to a man who himself is burdened
with his own challenges.
• It is necessary to have a just and equitable
atmosphere – for women and men both with an
approach of Emancipation / Liberation.

Our Clients are Increasingly WOMEN who make decisions
Our ecosystems are giving stronger voice to women
http://diversitynowbyegloballearning.blogspot.in/2012/08/leadership-styles-men-vs-women.html
25
Women today have the "soft skills" that are
more in demand in the workplace. The
world has gotten more verbal; boys haven't.
Women are advancing on all fronts,
and men, in general, are retreating.
Not only retreating, but failing,
underachieving, becoming redundant
and "useless".
Control is a mirage. The most effective leaders right now--men and women--
are those who embrace traits once considered feminine: ( FLUFFY)
• Empathy: Being sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of others.
• Vulnerability: Owning up to one's limitations and asking for help.
• Humility: Seeking to serve others and to share credit.
• Inclusiveness: Soliciting and listening to many voices.
• Generosity: Being liberal with time, contacts, advice, and support.
• Balance: Giving life, as well as work, its due.
• Patience: Taking a long-term view.
Feminine traits and values are a new form of innovation. They are
an untapped form of competitive advantage.
John Gerzema and Michael D’Antanio

Employers will have to rethink their
relationship with their people
• Strategy Behind the design of work
arrangements
• The setting in which work is done
• Organization of workflows and how
individual contributors add value
• Technologies used to support higher
achievements
• Degree to which employment
arrangements are tailored to
individuals
Customer’s end-to-end journey
• Customer Touch points matter, but it’s the full
journey that really counts!

Negotiating with Emotion !
• Emotion plays a positive role in decision making,
creativity and relationship building – all key
factors in reaching agreement – specially in
high-stakes deal making.
• There is a close link between creativity and
emotion
• Just like star athletes who are “In the Zone” wise
negotiators are centered, energized and resilient
in the face of strong feelings
• Traditional negotiation training admitted no role for
emotion.

• Socially Responsible CEOs and companies on the rise

more responsible
• Mature, Genuine Touch Points are Integral to everything
• Crowdsourcing / Free Agents are on rise !

The IN thing in the Corporate world and it is here to stay
Bringing Personalized Approach to Leadership Ecosystem – Growing
Recognition that women inherently do it well
What do you think?
• Masculine traits alone don’t work –i.e.
decisiveness, control, and confidence etc.
• The ideal leader, then, should be like the earth
itself: positioned between Mars and Venus.
• But in an environment of uncertainty and shifting
power structures, Venus is rising.

  • 7. 7 Technology at this time in history • The main characteristic of technology in the current economic phase is that it is providing virtualization. • Technology is creating, adding, unlocking, and exploring newer dimensions of being human. • As technology acquires more capability, and is even becoming more “intelligent”, it is creating newer dimensions and frontiers of well-being. • We need to enlist technology in ways to better understand the needs and dreams of other people, as a basis for providing more effective services. • Humans, social systems, and technologies exist in mutually co-sustaining relationships. Source :Co-Sustenance of Well-being in Socio-Technological Ecosystems Sukanya Patwardhan & Doug McDavid – International Society for Systems Sciences Conference 2006 USA

  • 9. • Globalization and the Internet gave customers real choices, access to instant reliable information and the ability to communicate with each other. • Power in shifted from seller to buyer. • Customers insist “better, cheaper, quicker and smaller,” along with “more convenient, reliable and personalized.” : My Way ! • 10. What on earth is happening to management? • The sacred goal of maximizing shareholder value is now “the dumbest idea in the world”. • The “essence of strategy” seen as “coping with competitors” is obsolete. • The uni-directional value chain —the very core of 20th Century management thinking—is now a problem, not a solution. • Supposed distinctions between leaders and managers have collapsed. • Plethora of recent management books suggest that today’s organizations represent a failure so deep and pervasive that there are hardly words to describe it. 10
  • 11. Management Literature Trend 11 Steve Denning, The Management Revolution That's Already Happening/ Forbes.com 30th May 2013

  • 14. Organizations are awakening to the understanding.. • People are not inventory • People are not the product • People are processors, co-producing/creating business value with the client • People are intelligent collaborating agents who seek to maximize value ALL people in the ecosystem, not just employees 14

  • 16. What is happening? • The technology/ automation began to erode jobs that required physical strength – the job market started changing and the “people skills” became more valuable. • The lasting professions became what a robot could not easily do! • Feminine attributes – empathy, patience, communal problem solving began to replace the top-down autocratic model of leadership and success. 16

  • 20. 20 Sense of Self.. • A man’s sense of self is defined by his ability to achieve results. • A woman’s sense of self is defined through her feelings and quality of her relationships.
  • 21. Overcoming Challenges … • It is not enough to ask for a woman’s equality vis- à-vis the men in the society/community. • It does not take a woman very far even if she becomes equal to a man who himself is burdened with his own challenges. • It is necessary to have a just and equitable atmosphere – for women and men both with an approach of Emancipation / Liberation. 21
