[Second Grade Reading & Comprehension]
Lesson Plan
[2016/2017]
My Strategy: I will be using seven strategies to teach comprehension which are:
monitoring comprehension, metacognition, graphic/semantic organizers for measuring
and assessing, answering questions, generating questions, recognizing story structure,
and summarizing. Using these he steps of explicit instruction typically include direct
explanation, teacher modeling ("thinking aloud"), guided practice, and application
which is intended to engage each learner to reach their maximum reading and
comprehension capacity. I will be using the three core principles to make planning
with UDL a success. This will be incorporated through ways like: how to teach the
content to make it accessible (representation), how the students will show what they
learned (expression), and how to motivate all the learners to do their best work
(engagement).

General Information
Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? This is a cute story about a day in the life of a cute little bear named
Jesse. Yes, it talks about what he’ll wear, but it’s so much more! The book also uses rhyming words in
a playful manner, discusses foods to eat, playtime and bedtime. Definitely a classic and one of our
families favorites!
Expectations and Goals
Children will develop creative-thinking, literacy and language skills as they dramatize and extend the story.
Comprehension strategies are conscious plans — sets of steps that good readers use to make sense of text.
Comprehension strategy instruction helps students become purposeful, active readers who are in control of their own
reading comprehension. These seven strategies have research-based evidence for improving text comprehension.

Required Text
Book: Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear
Activities
1. Read Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? to the children. Invite them to
join in as you read the rhyming words.
2. Explain that you will reread the story. Tell them that you would like
them to join in and create movements to dramatize the events that Jesse
Bear will encounter on his romp through a bright and sunny day.
3. Continue reading the story throughout the week. Provide a variety of
dramatic play props for the children and encourage small groups to
dramatize the story while others narrate it.
4. Invite Families or other classes to their “adventure on a bright and sunny
day.”

• Chart Paper
• Drawing Paper
• Crayons and Markers
Activity
1. Ask the children to recall the different experiences that Jesse Bear will
encounter while on his adventure. List their responses on chart paper.
2. Encourage the children to imagine they are going on an adventure. Ask
them to think of different places that they will go—like outer space, an
island, a jungle, a zoo, etc. What types of experiences might they
encounter or what would they wear in these environments? Record the
children’s ideas.

3. Review the list with the children. Substitute the new bear-adventure
ideas as you reread the book. Encourage the child to recite the
repetitive phrases and to dramatize their new adventures.
Provide the students with drawing materials to illustrate their new
adventure ideas. Attach a sheet of paper to the bottom of the drawings
include the repetitive story text and new adventure. Bind the pages
together to create a fun classroom read aloud.

Jesse Bear eats sprouts bunched on celery, so spread cream cheese on the
celery and then add in the sprouts

Summary: This is a cute story about a day in the life of a cute little
bear named Jesse. Yes, it talks about what he’ll wear, but it’s so
much more! The book also uses rhyming words in a playful manner,
discusses foods to eat, playtime and bedtime. Definitely a classic
and one of our families favorites!

Craft: We made a cute little dress up bear awhile back and I
thought it would be perfect for this activity so we got him back out.
It’s simply a bear printed out on brown cardstock then laminated. I
put Velcro dots on his body then cutout clothes from colorful felt.
It’s easy to dress him as you just stick them on!

Here is a cute paper bear as well if you don’t have the above
supplies:
