The present condition of water situation in India and what can be done about the same. How individuals can contribute to water conservation. Right from recogising virtual water in everything we use, till changing behaviours to sustainability
3. 1.BECAUSE WATER
IS PRECIOUS
• While the earth has
71% water, only less
than 0.1% of it is
usable
• Do you know what
proportion of earth is
water?
• It is 71%
• Do you know how much
usable water we have
on earth?
4. 2.BECAUSE WATER
DEMAND & SUPPLY
TREND IS ALARMING
Source : BOOK; AU - Sharma, Charul; AU - Sharma, Sanjay; PY - 2017/07/06
“WASTEWATER REUTILIZATION SCENARIO: AN OVERVIEW OF ITS SCOPE AND POLICIES”
By 2030, the country's water demand is projected to be twice the available
supply
- Kasturirangan Committee report
5. Is demand increasing because
of population growth ?
NOT EXACTLY
Because of the changing
habits of the population
That’s why these two lines are not parallel. The per capita water demand is
increasing day by day due to change in consumption pattern.
6. Supply steeply declining
year by year
Again due to changing habits
of the population which
increased;
• Pollution of water bodies
• Destruction of mountains
• Deforestation in the name of
‘development’
Anything below 1700 is considered to be deep distress situation
Per capita per year in thousand cubic meters
9. FOLLOW 6+1 R’S
1. Recognize water in everything you use
2. Reduce usage
3. Reduce wastage
4. Recharge
6. Reverse habits
7. R?????
And finally………………
5. Refrain from polluting water bodies
10. 1. RECOGNISE WATER IN EVERYTHING –
VIRTUAL WATER
How much water did you drink
today?
How much water did you eat
today?
How much water do you wear?
11. 2. REDUCE USAGE
• Aerators are
available from
0.5LPM(Litres Per
Minute) to 3 LPM
while the normal
average is 10 LPM
• On an average if
10 mins tap usage
per household,
minimum 70 litres
per day per
household.
• With all other
options minimum
150 litres is
possible per day.
• 55,000 litres per
household per
year.
• If 50% of Indian
population does
this, we can save
35,00,000 Crore
litres of water per
year.
12. 3 REDUCE WASTAGE
How much virtual water do you
see here?
Major wastage is happening in
Weddings and hotels
Say no to bottled water
Fill only how much you want to
drink and finish it
Order only what you want and
finish it
Stop ordering from home as side
dishes (Chutney, Sambar etc.,)ar
generally packed more than
warranted
INDIA WASTES AS MUCH FOOD AS UK CONSUMES
– A STUDY IN JULY 2019
13. 4 RECHARGE
Install Rain Water
harvesting
Induce others too
Rejuvenate water
bodies collectively
as society
Plant more trees
Indian Ground water situation:
Jun 06 2017 : The Times of India
GOING DOWN AND DOWN;
INDIA IS BIGGEST CONSUMER OF GROUND WATER, 124% MORE THAN CHINA AND US
Source: Managing Water Under Uncertainty and Risk, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Data for 2010. Together, these
countries account for 72% of the groundwater extracted annually
14. 5 REFRAIN FROM POLLUTING WATER
BODIES
Remember all that we do not
dispose responsibly, reaches
the water bodies
and hence ;
Reduce plastics
Reduce e-wastes
Reduce chemicals in daily
use
o Shampoos
o Hair dyes
o Detergents
o Dish wash liquids
o Soaps
o And what not?
INDIA RANKS 120TH OUT OF 122 COUNTRIES IN WATER QUALITY INDEX
- NITI AAYOG REPORT JUNE 2019
15. 6 REVERSE HABITS
Carry your own bags/containers for shopping
Replace RO with clay pots
The less you buy, the lesser will be your wastage
(stop impulse buying, adopt wardrobe balance)
Go organic; It takes less virtual water for
producing organic produces
Let the Wedding and other functions be simple
Stay in harmony with nature
16. 7 REMEMBER YOUR CHILDREN
Natural Resources are not your ancestral property; it’s a debt to
owe to your next generation; Return it with interest
No amount of wealth can match availability of water to live
There is every reason and an urgent necessity to stay “obsessed”
with water conservation
