Essay about My Communication Skills
My Communication Skills Improving my communication skills has been a work in progress
starting back in the early years of my life. I have always been my own worse critic. Usually beating
myself down through interpersonal communication. Now as an adult I have made great improvements
but still have trouble dealing with perception and self–image. Not being raised in an environment of
positive reinforcement and poor communication in the workplace I have made it a point to change
that trait in my own family and professional environment....show more content...
My goals for improving self–image are first to make the steps to be the person I want to be.
Whether it is through exercise or education myself to build up my intellectual strength. Making a
self–image inventory, noting those things that I like about myself. The make a list of the negative
traits that I want to improve. Changing my focus from negative to positive should help me avoid
being depressed. The best thing I can do I recognize my shortcomings but don't dwell on them. A
key characteristic in dire need of improvement would be my perception. I was raised in an
environment where stereotypes and first impressions were the norm. Expecting certain actions
from people based on what I've heard or seen in the past, not being empathetic in my views. In
circumstances like UOP, if a student does not interact or participate at the same level as myself,
they would be interpreted as being a procrastinator. I certainly have issues with trust, usually taking
a cautious approach to the team atmosphere in fear of not meeting the courses expectations. In the
last few classes I have posted questions and asked for feedback on peoples expectations in hopes that

Communication is the articulation of sending a message, through different media whether it be
verbal or nonverbal, as long as a being transmits a though provoking idea, gesture, action, etc. (media.
Online Etymology dictionary. Retrieved on March 14, 2008)
Communication is central to all of these worlds (that we build together), not in the sense of control,
which positivist ontology naturally favors, but in the sense of dialoguing an ongoing process that
respects the autonomy of different reality constructions, enables each participant to interrogate his or
her history and grow beyond it. Dialogue probably is the most noble form of human interaction, and
communication scholars should be the first to appreciate its outstanding human qualities.
(Krippendorff, 1989, p. 94)
Communication scholars have intensified their interest in theories of dialogue during the past 20
years, finding and creating applications in interpersonal, organizational, intercultural, rhetorical,
media, community, and performance settings (see, e.g., the earlier collections of essays we edited
on the theory and practice of dialogue–Anderson, Baxter, & Cissna, 2004; Anderson, Cissna, &

interpersonal interaction, which is regulated by certain norm and oriented by goals (Schoop,
Köhne, & Ostertag, 2010). Through learning the Business Communication course, I had understood
various communication concepts and theories. Additionally, I have further developed my
understanding of interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics through applying concepts into practical

Low level of interpersonal trust and negative interaction are considered to be the attributes of
Internet communication (Fawkes & Gregory, 2010; Lee et al., 2011). According to Gerpott (2010),
Internet communication is not only separates people from physical distance, but also psychological
connections. Mayer (2010) adds that confrontational expression and disagreement can be often seen
from Internet communication. However, this does not fully apply to our circumstance. Although
there are some negative impacts of purely relying on Internet communication, by meeting
pace–to–pace purposefully, the negative influence can be mitigated (Forrester & Tashchian, 2010).
In the group work, the Internet communication was only the alternative to us and we started to form
the group as classmates who meet each other daily. Group work is defined by Judeh (2011), a
number of people have their motives mixed and work collaboratively to achieve common goals.
Cooperative and competitive forms are often detected in terms of group work interdependence
(Riebe, Roepen, Santarelli & Marchioro, 2010). Improved communication, high productivity and
willingness of participating are often observed from cooperative interdependence whereas
communicating deadlocks, aggressiveness and competition are often found in competitive
interdependence (Forrester & Tashchian, 2010). Noticeably, the cooperativeness was the spirit for
the group and we

Essay on Effective Communication Skills
Introduction
An important step to becoming an effective leader is to develop effective communication skills.
Communication is the transmission of meaning from one person to another or to many people,
whether verbally or non–verbally (Barrett, 2006). Effective communication enables leaders to lead.
Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that
the sender intended to covey. As a leader, studying the communication process is important.
Communication skills, including the ability to problem solve, work in teams, and adapt to various
audiences, are critical in today's workplace (Levy& Murname, 2004). Since the most successful
leaders communicate well, understanding how your...show more content...
The IHC instrument consists of 27 statements. Using a 5–point scale with 1 being strongly agree and
5 being strongly disagree, I rated each of the 27 statements. A score between 109 and 135
indicates an excellent understanding of the communication process. A score between 82 and 108
means there are a few areas that need some work while a score between 54 and 81 suggests there
are several areas that need attention. A score between 27and 53 implies across the board
improvement is needed. This instrument heightened my understanding of my role as a sender and a
receiver. It highlighted the importance of asking questions and providing feedback in order to
promote clarity. It stressed the significance of non–verbal communication so that I not only hear, but
also see what is being communicated to me. Finally, I learned the impact of using the appropriate
communication channels for maximum effectiveness.
Next, I used an updated version of Mok's (1975) Communication Style, to determine my
communication style (see Appendix B). The Mok survey was modified by Hartman and
McCambridge (2010) using insights from Alessandra and Hunsaker (1993) and Merrill and Reid
(1999). I chose this survey instrument because it has been used in both academia and executive
development programs over the last several years. The reason this particular tool is popular in both
academia and business is because it highlights the

This assignment discusses barriers to, and methods of, effective communication with people who are
confused by reflecting on my experience in communicating with an elderly confused patient.
Specifically, and within the scope of this assignment, I reflect on two methods of effective
communication with elderly confused patients; one verbal (reality orientation) and one non–verbal
(touch).
During my first placement I was asked to assist in the care of Elsie (pseudonym), an 86 year old
lady admitted to hospital with a fracture to her hip and a urinary tract infection (UTI). Elsie was
suffering from frequent periodic episodes of confusion; however this was not due to a diagnosed
cognitive disorder. Manos and Braun (2006) and Keenan (2011a)...show more content...
I felt helpless as I didn't know how to help Elsie understand what I was communicating and for me
to understand Elsie. I felt more anxious when Elsie became tearful because I felt that my inability to
effectively communicate with her had caused her to become upset. Langland and Panicucci (1982)
say that using effective communication is vital for establishing the nurse–client relationship, and
particularly important with the elderly confused patient in helping them make choices and in
providing direction and/or supervision in self–care. In providing nursing care, the Department of
Health (DoH) Essence of Care report on communication says that health professionals should ensure
that "people and their carers experience effective communication" (DoH, 2010, p.7) with a best
practice benchmark that "appropriate and effective methods are used to enable people and carers to
communicate" (DoH, 2010, p.8). Additionally, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) say that
we must "make arrangements to meet people's language and communication needs" (NMC, 2008,
p.3).
The communication barrier I experienced may have been due to Elsie's lack of ability to process or
understand what I was saying or an inability to express herself verbally. Bowlby (1991) and Miller et
al. (1996) say that some of the

I used my phone and computer combined for a total of 199 minutes on this particular day. I was
on the phone my cell or my house phone for a majority of that time, totaling 154 minutes to be
exact. My Mother lives in Michigan, I don't get to see her very often our way of communicating is
over the phone and when I talk to her it's normally for a least an hour. Only 45 minutes was
computer usage and that was to read the discussion forum and check alerts, e–mails. I don't think that
199 minutes is that long but it definitely made me realize how much I'm on it on a daily basis. Out
of a 24 hour day I used 3 hours and about 32 minutes of my day on the phone and computer. Now a

and if you don't like what it says you can reword and type it over. It also gives you a permanent
record of what you said, and what others have said to you. You definitely have to pay attention as to
what you are saying and make sure that you really mean it. "We can use emoticons, punctuation, and
capitalized words as nonverbal symbols that provide additional meaning to the words we write. We
can also now communicate using videoconferencing technology on our computers, tablets, and

Essay about Communication
Communication Communicating means the passing on or receiving of information. Communication
is important so that information, instructions, directions and requests can be passed between people
and organisations.
Internal and External communications
This can be by verbal, non–verbal or written means between people within the same organisation e.g.

You don't know who you are talking to.
Nearly everyone has access to a phone.
The Importance of Passing on Information
It is important for a business that information is passed on correctly, quickly and securely.
Poor or misleading sales and market information could lead a company to make a wrong decision in
deciding their future business strategy. In a competitive market it is also important that you are first
to have vital market information ahead of your competitors, as this gives you an advantage.
Personal information must be stored correctly and securely and not passed onto other people without
their permission. The storage and use of personal information is controlled by the Data Protection
Act 1998. Examples of

Formal Communication
Formal Communication
Formal communication can be considered as communication efforts that are "dressed up" to fit
customary rules and ceremony For example, in a written letter, the formal communication style will
demand that the layout of the piece of written communication follow a specific format that includes
the date, header, salutation, body of the letter, close, signature lines and any indicators of enclosures
all placed neatly upon company letterhead or personal stationery. By contrast, an informal piece of
written communication can be as simple as a jotted note to a friend on a torn slip of paper
Formal communications are mostly written, although they may now also include formal
presentations that are on computer disk, video tape...show more content...
Such formal communication is well established and planned. For example, reports and data from
staff are organized are generally submitted in prescribed templates and according to a set schedule.
Communication focused on a company's strategy and direction, which originates from company
executives, is funnelled through the organizational chart and changed in such a way to be relevant to
each department and manager. What starts out as "high–level" communication on corporate strategy
needs to be thought out through planning sessions so that the communication provides direction and
is actionable for the individuals who implement the tasks of the strategy. The better the
communication the better employees and staff will understand what is expected and required of
them. advertisement

Being an Effective Communicator. Informal Communication in the Workplace
On the other hand, informal communication in the workplace satisfies a variety of needs,
particularly social and emotional, and are not based on the positions individuals occupy within the
organizations. As a result, the communication is not managed or planned in any organized fashion.
It's more relaxed, casual and tends to be spread by word–of–mouth quickly throughout a department
or organization because it's not restricted to approvals and

Dialogue probably is the most noble form of human interaction, and communication scholars should be the first to appreciate its outstanding human qualities. (Krippendorff, 1989, p. 94) Communication scholars have intensified their interest in theories of dialogue during the past 20 years, finding and creating applications in interpersonal, organizational, intercultural, rhetorical, media, community, and performance settings (see, e.g., the earlier collections of essays we edited on the theory and practice of dialogue–Anderson, Baxter, & Cissna, 2004; Anderson, Cissna, & Arnett, 1994; Cissna, 2000). Low level of interpersonal trust and negative interaction are considered to be the attributes of Internet communication (Fawkes & Gregory, 2010; Lee et al., 2011). According to Gerpott (2010), Internet communication is not only separates people from physical distance, but also psychological connections. Mayer (2010) adds that confrontational expression and disagreement can be often seen from Internet communication. However, this does not fully apply to our circumstance. Although there are some negative impacts of purely relying on Internet communication, by meeting pace–to–pace purposefully, the negative influence can be mitigated (Forrester & Tashchian, 2010). In the group work, the Internet communication was only the alternative to us and we started to form the group as classmates who meet each other daily. Group work is defined by Judeh (2011), a number of people have their motives mixed and work collaboratively to achieve common goals. Cooperative and competitive forms are often detected in terms of group work interdependence (Riebe, Roepen, Santarelli & Marchioro, 2010). Improved communication, high productivity and willingness of participating are often observed from cooperative interdependence whereas communicating deadlocks, aggressiveness and competition are often found in competitive interdependence (Forrester & Tashchian, 2010). • 5. Essay on Effective Communication Skills Introduction An important step to becoming an effective leader is to develop effective communication skills. Communication is the transmission of meaning from one person to another or to many people, whether verbally or non–verbally (Barrett, 2006). Effective communication enables leaders to lead. Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to covey. As a leader, studying the communication process is important. Communication skills, including the ability to problem solve, work in teams, and adapt to various audiences, are critical in today's workplace (Levy& Murname, 2004). Using a 5–point scale with 1 being strongly agree and 5 being strongly disagree, I rated each of the 27 statements. A score between 109 and 135 indicates an excellent understanding of the communication process. A score between 82 and 108 means there are a few areas that need some work while a score between 54 and 81 suggests there are several areas that need attention. A score between 27and 53 implies across the board improvement is needed. This instrument heightened my understanding of my role as a sender and a receiver. It highlighted the importance of asking questions and providing feedback in order to promote clarity. It stressed the significance of non–verbal communication so that I not only hear, but also see what is being communicated to me. Finally, I learned the impact of using the appropriate communication channels for maximum effectiveness. Next, I used an updated version of Mok's (1975) Communication Style, to determine my communication style (see Appendix B). The Mok survey was modified by Hartman and McCambridge (2010) using insights from Alessandra and Hunsaker (1993) and Merrill and Reid (1999). I chose this survey instrument because it has been used in both academia and executive development programs over the last several years. Essay about Communication This assignment discusses barriers to, and methods of, effective communication with people who are confused by reflecting on my experience in communicating with an elderly confused patient. Specifically, and within the scope of this assignment, I reflect on two methods of effective communication with elderly confused patients; one verbal (reality orientation) and one non–verbal (touch). During my first placement I was asked to assist in the care of Elsie (pseudonym), an 86 year old lady admitted to hospital with a fracture to her hip and a urinary tract infection (UTI). Elsie was suffering from frequent periodic episodes of confusion; however this was not due to a diagnosed cognitive disorder. Manos and Braun (2006) and Keenan (2011a)...show more content... I felt helpless as I didn't know how to help Elsie understand what I was communicating and for me to understand Elsie. I felt more anxious when Elsie became tearful because I felt that my inability to effectively communicate with her had caused her to become upset. Langland and Panicucci (1982) say that using effective communication is vital for establishing the nurse–client relationship, and particularly important with the elderly confused patient in helping them make choices and in providing direction and/or supervision in self–care. In providing nursing care, the Department of Health (DoH) Essence of Care report on communication says that health professionals should ensure that "people and their carers experience effective communication" (DoH, 2010, p.7) with a best practice benchmark that "appropriate and effective methods are used to enable people and carers to communicate" (DoH, 2010, p.8). Additionally, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) say that we must "make arrangements to meet people's language and communication needs" (NMC, 2008, p.3). The communication barrier I experienced may have been due to Elsie's lack of ability to process or understand what I was saying or an inability to express herself verbally.
