Thesis Statement
HOW TO WRITE A STRONG THESIS STATEMENT A WRITING CENTRE HANDOUT
1. UNDERSTAND THE ACADEMIC WRITING TASK
You can begin to formulate a good thesis statement only after you have got a solid grasp of the
purpose of the assignment. If you're asked to write a paper in response to a specific assignment
question, then your first task is make sure that you clearly understand the academic writing task.
Determine which of the following critical thinking skills you are primarily being asked to apply to
your object(s) of study: analysis comparison evaluation argumentation interpretation reflection
Your thesis statement, then, should take a form that reflects the goal of the writing task.

Remember that a tentative thesis statement is not something set in stone; rather, it is something
meant to help you focus your analysis and research so that the writing task becomes manageable.
You should not attempt to start collecting and analyzing evidence until you have an idea of the
main argument you would like make in your paper. Generating the thesis statement, then, can be
thought of as a recursive process. In the early stages of planning and writing, the tentative thesis
helps you focus on the evidence in a certain way, but as you get further along in the writing process
the analysis of evidence should also help you clarify the thesis statement (Rosenwasser et al. 132).
The writers of Writing Analytically recommend that you ask yourself the following questions as you
go through the process of generating a main claim for your essay:
3
What kinds of patterns or implications emerge when I look closely at my evidence?
What kind of evidence and support do I need to support my tentative thesis? What kind of evidence
cannot be adequately accounted for by my tentative thesis? How can I explain the mismatches
between my thesis statement and my selected evidence?
How can I rewrite my thesis statement in order to accommodate the evidence that doesn't fit?
This practice of constantly readjusting the thesis statement to match the evidence and analysis will
ultimately lead you to write a polished and defensible thesis statement in your final

Weaver from Oklahoma State University. According to the authors "the purpose of the present study
was to determine if sleep deprivation and/or poor sleep quality in a sample of non–depressed
university students was associated with lower academic performance" (Gilbert, Cameron. 295).
The study was also made to determine the relationship between sleep deprivation, sleep quality, and
academic performance (Gilbert, Cameron. 298). It was hypothesized that by the end of the study,
participants who had higher levels of sleep deprivation and poorer sleep quality would have lower
academic performance (as indicated by grade point average [GPA] and course incompletions–drops,
withdrawals, and incompletes) than participants with little sleep deprivation and good sleep quality
(Gilbert, Cameron. 298). By the end of the study, the authors discussed the results in the following
narration: To our knowledge, this is the first study to have found a relationship between poor sleep
quality and lower academic performance using a large sample size and, importantly, for
nondepressed students alone (controlling for depression). The significant negative correlation
between GSQ score and GPA supports our initial hypothesis that poor sleep quality is associated with
lower academic performance for nondepressed students. This hypothesis is also supported by the
finding that in our subject population nondepressed students with clinically poor sleep quality had
significantly lower GPAs than

The Closed-Open Continuum
Writing is a skill that is learned, taught and most importantly dreaded by most students. This includes
students of all ages but however if you have trouble with writing or coming up with a thesis
statement you can always use the closed–open continuum. The closed–open continuum is a structure
demonstrating different levels of determining how to propose your thesis and structure your writing.
The closed side of the continuum is top down– thesis based prose, this means that you introduce your
thesis at the beginning of the introduction. Top down–thesis based consists of your typical five
paragraph essay. This also means that you will be introducing your thesis in the introduction
paragraph. On the other side of the continuum is theme based narrative

Writing in a Foreign Language Essay
For a very long time, people have been studying the differences of writing among different cultures.
Native speakers write texts which are very different from the texts written by foreign language
writers. The main reason is that each culture has its patterns of thinking and it determines the way
that they write. As a result, foreign language students need to learn the patterns of the language and
the way that native speakers usually develop their ideas. If you want to make texts in a foreign
language, you need to study how people arrange their knowledge.
American writers, for example, tend to arrange their ideas in a straight line of development. In
general, we have a central idea, known as main thesis,...show more content...
In order to write in Japanese, you need to follow a circular though. First, you start with the main
idea, pointing out your thesis and introducing the ideas to the reader. After that, you get out to the
point introducing a new topic. Finally, you get to the main point to conclude. It is common in the
oriental culture, where they have a different approach of thinking of the occidental ones.
Portuguese writers tend to write a paragraph that contains digressions. They have a central idea but
sometimes it is interrupted by some ideas or examples that are far from the main idea. Similarly, a
paragraph in Russian often contains digressions. In different cultures, we have different lines of
development that are influenced by the patterns of thinking. However, none of them is better than
any other, they are only different.
According to Bander(1971,27) "Ideas don´t fit together from language to language. Each
culture has its own way of thinking." I agree with the author, each culture is influenced by its
patterns of thinking. The awareness that rhetorical patterns differ from one culture to another can
help us to write in a culture that is not native to us.
Robert B. Kaplan, an important professor of applied linguistics at the University of Southern
California, highlights that students in ESL programs write texts which are very different from texts
written by native speakers. However,

My Thesis Statement
My strongest point in my essay was my thesis statement. The thesis statement was short but very
guiding. It guided the reader into the keys points of my essay. 29 I've really struggled with writing
thesis statements, so what I decided to do was give myself random essays with a topic and write
thesis statements on them. I would figure out what the main points would be in my essay and put
those topics into my thesis statement. It really made my thesis statements stronger in my writing.
When reading my outline of corrections, I realized a lot of minor imperfections. When writing my
essay, I just assumed I was writing everything correctly. I made tons of minor grammar mistakes,
that could have been avoided by proof reading. My major mistakes came from comma placement.
When trying to find ways to improve the placement of my commas, I came across this website https:
//owl.english.purdue.edu/exercises/3/5/15/answer. It's a site that helps you to improve your
punctuation placement. It gives you sentences and ask you how many commas does this sentences

Listening Process Essay
Listening is one of the most powerful tools of communication and is a process that is used to
receive, convey a meaning, and respond to both verbal and nonverbal messages. It is what we
choose to do and it requires more work than speaking. Oftentimes, people simply misunderstand the
difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is a passive process that takes in sounds and
noises and listening is what you choose to do. This selective process includes 5 phases that can be
acquired for us to become effective listeners in the future. The 5 phases are attending, understanding,
remembering, critically evaluating (listening), and responding. Once the 5 different areas are
understood, we will become aware of what needs to change and how we...show more content...
The last two factors of attending are to resist tuning out and avoid interruptions. When it comes to
tuning out and interrupting, I have a huge dilemma while communicating with others. Back in high
school, that was one thing that I was good at; tuning out. I even still struggled with it coming into
college. In my first semester at Nassau Community College, a student asked me what we had to
get done on a class assignment and I had completely tuned out because I got easily distracted by
thinking about what I needed to do when I got home. I knew that tuning out was not a pleasant idea
and I should change that before it got out of hand. I keep a constant reminder that blocking mixed
thoughts and distractions will accredit me to improve in this area of the listening process. Avoiding
interruptions has always been an issue and still is to this day. It only occurs when I'm with family
and/or friends but never at school or with teachers. During an encounter with a friend, she was
talking about how we don't spend enough time hanging out and after a single minute, I interrupted
her with a tangential response. Interrupting interferes with attending and tends to be a barrier for
most school–going students. If we want to prevent interruptions from happening, turn–taking should
be greatly put into consideration. The next time I communicate with family or friends, I need to keep
in mind to patiently wait until it's my turn to speak.
The second phase of the

в…Ј. Conclusion for essay Essay conclusion is the closing paragraph at the end of the essay to
restate your thesis statement (key essay idea) with strong points. The conclusion is the last chance
to persuade your readers to your point of view, to impress yourself upon them as a writer and
thinker. And the impression you create in your conclusion will shape the impression that stays with
your readers after they've finished the essay. It is different from summary. Summary reiterates the
main points of your essay whereas conclusion winds up the essay in a clear and interesting way
emphasizing on your personal opinion or suggesting a plan of action. It is normally a two to three
lines paragraph that makes the reader feel that essay is complete.
в…¤. The function of the essay's Conclusion
1. It reminds the reader of the strengths of the argument. It reiterates the most important evidence
supporting the argument. Your conclusion is not simply a repetitive summary as this reduces the
impact of the argument you have developed in your essay.
2. The conclusion provides a forum for you to persuasively and succinctly restate your thesis given.
The reader has been presented with all the information about the topic.
3. The concluding paragraph also contains a reflection on the evidence presented, or on

Summary Of A Strong Thesis Statement
The foundation of your essay relies on a strong thesis statement, but what exactly is a thesis and
how do you develop it? Creating a good thesis is vital when it comes to writing a skilled essay. If
your thesis is not effective, then your whole essay is weak. Chapter 6 of Successful College Writing
thoroughly explains everything that has to do with a thesis and all the important things* to keep in
mind whilst writing one. Also, this chapter emphasizes how crucial it is to support your thesis with
reliable and factual sources. A thesis statement is an introduction to the topic of youressay. It is
typically introduced in the first paragraph, but in some cases it can be written after that. It can either

The chemical poisoning in water have a great impact on humans because it can cause brain damage
and physical deformities in unborn fetuses. Pollution disrupts the natural food chain as well.
Pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by tiny animals. Later, these animals are consumed by
fish and shellfish, and the food chain continues to be disrupted at all higher levels. Eventually,
humans are affected by this process as well. People can get diseases such as hepatitis by eating
seafood that has been poisoned. Besides, Water pollutants introduce abnormal conditions (harmful
chemicals, changes in water temperatures) into water bodies, disrupting existing ecosystems and can
potentially contribute to reducing biodiversity in that affected area – one of the effects of water
pollution. For example, the discharge of heated–up water from thermal and nuclear power plants into
a river can cause problems for aquatic organisms, which are fairly used to specific temperatures.
The increase in water temperatures could increase their metabolic rates and hence their need for
food. This could eventually lead to the depletion of food sources in that water region and in turn
cause a reduction in species population in that water region. Besides thermal pollution, water could
also be polluted via the entry of acidic substances into the water bodies through rivers, seas and
oceans. The effects of water pollution by this process, known as

Synthesis Thesis
1. Identify your thesis statement. How can it be more clear and/or specific? If you don't have a
thesis, identify a common thread or idea between the two assigned readings and create one.
Remember, a synthesis is not a compare & contrast essay.
Thesis: "Therefore, the food industry uses strategies of designing "healthier" fortified foods and
designing the layout to place products as many as possible in the supermarkets because these
strategies can help increase profits through stimulating consumers to more food in larger size
frequently." It can be more clear by presenting specific reasons.
2. Do you offer an interesting introduction that introduces your thesis, as well as the articles you're
synthesizing? What elements of the introduction are particularly effective? Which need more work?

The effective elements of the introduction are the illustration of the food industry. The introduction
of the two articles needs more work. I need to make it more clear.
3. Do you summarize the parts of the original articles that are directly related to their synthesis? If
not, make note of which parts of the synthesis would benefit from such a summary. If so, make sure
that the summary is objective when it needs to be and cited properly when necessary.
I summarize the parts of the original parts. For the article "Go Forth and Fortify", I summarized the
part of" the necessity of adding amounts of vitamins and minerals in the food and beverage" and
"the effectiveness of fortification in improving health." For the article "The Supermarket: Prime Real
Estate," I summarized the part of "the tactics behind the layout of the store and the product
placement." The summary is objective.

Writing A Thesis Statement
Chapter three explains what a thesis is, gives examples, and informs where the thesis can be located
in an essay. A thesis is summarized in one or two sentences as the main point, main idea or
controlling idea stated in an essay. Some thesis statements are directly stated, implied or suggested.
The writer needs to relate their thoughts about the essay to their thesis, because the thesis directs and
controls the decisions made about the way you write your essay. As you get into more depth of your

Importance Of Writing A Thesis Statement
6. a. Why is it important for a thesis statement to be specific?
b. Why is it often the last part of a paper to be "fussed over" in the revision process?

a. It's important for your thesis statement to be specific because it's that the first thing you read, and
that thesis statement will inform your reader what the essay is about. The thesis statement will
determine if the reader will continue reader or not.
b. The last part of a paper is often to be "fussed over" in the revision process because in your essay

Before writing a thesis statement, you need to look at all the information that you need for your

will help you determine what your thesis statement will say and what it'll be about.
b. Some of the characteristics of a strong thesis statement are that it needs to be specific, interesting,

(depending who your audience is).
8. a. Why do you think it's important to consider what kind of paper you are writing (the purpose)

a. It's important to consider what kind of paper you are writing before writing the thesis statement
because there are different kinds of thesis statement that you can write depending what the purpose
of the paper is. For example, if it was an argumental essay, you're thesis statement would be an
opinion, a policy proposal or etc. Also, when writing your thesis statement it's important to look back

Thesis Elements
1.What are the elements of a thesis?
There are many elements of a thesis. They are as followed:
A thesis in generally stated in one sentence. (Connelly & Mark, 2011, pg. 55) This allows the
statement to be the core of the paper and clearly states your point of view. (Connelly &Mark, 2011,
pg. 55) This is also a critical in your prewriting process, it helps you move from a list or cluster of
ideas to a specific paper. (Connelly & Mark, 2011, pg. 55) Writing this sentence can focus your
ideas and direct your writing, even if you fail to actually have your thesis appear in your final paper.
(Connelly & Mark, 2011, pg. 55)
A thesis also expresses an opinion, not a topic. (Connelly & Mark, 2011, pg. 55) I say this because
a thesis statement does not announce a subject like a topic but actually expresses your viewpoint.
(Connelly & Mark, 2011, pg. 55) In other words it one sentence that doesn't discuss a topic but an
opinion.
They focus the topic. "Part of the job of a thesis statement is to direct the paper, limiting the scope of
the writer's area of concentration". (Connelly & Mark, 2011, pg. 55)
"They indicate the kind of support to follow." (Connelly & Mark, 2011, pg. 56) Since a thesis is
more like your opinions, they require proof. (Connelly & Mark, 2011, pgs.56) You need to indicate a

Developing a Thesis Statement
Developing a Thesis Statement After choosing a topic, it is important to understand the role a
thesis statement in the essay. A thesis statement serves as a road sign that gives sign of what the
writing is intended to tackle; it is the answer to the question asked. A thesis statement is an
assertion; it takes a stand announcing the writer's position on the topic. It is important for the
writer to explore the topic to find a particular narrow subject. It is also important for the writer to
know the purpose and audience of the paper. A thesis statement for a narrative essay needs to be
vivid and captivating. The starting point is asking a question. A thesis can be developed by
answering a question. For example a family reunion, what role does a family reunion play in
strengthening the family? Then formulation of a sentence that serves as a thesis: "family reunion
plays a key role of strengthening family ties by..." here it is advisable for the writer to follow a rigid
structure, know the basic formula to keep the statement within the acceptable length as well as to
organize the argument. In addition, following a pattern that holds the core idea will aid in
developing a clear subject. Here, an idea does something because [reason(s)], Family reunion
strengthens family ties [they help keep fond memories]. This then becomes, because [reason(s)],
[idea] [does something], because [they help keep fond memories], [family reunion] [strengthens
family ties]. This is refined to although

Process Essay Thesis Statement

  • 1. Thesis Statement HOW TO WRITE A STRONG THESIS STATEMENT A WRITING CENTRE HANDOUT 1. UNDERSTAND THE ACADEMIC WRITING TASK You can begin to formulate a good thesis statement only after you have got a solid grasp of the purpose of the assignment. If you're asked to write a paper in response to a specific assignment question, then your first task is make sure that you clearly understand the academic writing task. Determine which of the following critical thinking skills you are primarily being asked to apply to your object(s) of study: analysis comparison evaluation argumentation interpretation reflection Your thesis statement, then, should take a form that reflects the goal of the writing task. 2. Remember that a tentative thesis statement is not something set in stone; rather, it is something meant to help you focus your analysis and research so that the writing task becomes manageable. You should not attempt to start collecting and analyzing evidence until you have an idea of the main argument you would like make in your paper. Generating the thesis statement, then, can be thought of as a recursive process. In the early stages of planning and writing, the tentative thesis helps you focus on the evidence in a certain way, but as you get further along in the writing process the analysis of evidence should also help you clarify the thesis statement (Rosenwasser et al. 132). The writers of Writing Analytically recommend that you ask yourself the following questions as you go through the process of generating a main claim for your essay: 3 What kinds of patterns or implications emerge when I look closely at my evidence? What kind of evidence and support do I need to support my tentative thesis? What kind of evidence cannot be adequately accounted for by my tentative thesis? How can I explain the mismatches between my thesis statement and my selected evidence? How can I rewrite my thesis statement in order to accommodate the evidence that doesn't fit? This practice of constantly readjusting the thesis statement to match the evidence and analysis will

According to the authors "the purpose of the present study was to determine if sleep deprivation and/or poor sleep quality in a sample of non–depressed university students was associated with lower academic performance" (Gilbert, Cameron. 295). The study was also made to determine the relationship between sleep deprivation, sleep quality, and academic performance (Gilbert, Cameron. 298). It was hypothesized that by the end of the study, participants who had higher levels of sleep deprivation and poorer sleep quality would have lower academic performance (as indicated by grade point average [GPA] and course incompletions–drops, withdrawals, and incompletes) than participants with little sleep deprivation and good sleep quality (Gilbert, Cameron. 298). By the end of the study, the authors discussed the results in the following narration: To our knowledge, this is the first study to have found a relationship between poor sleep quality and lower academic performance using a large sample size and, importantly, for nondepressed students alone (controlling for depression). The significant negative correlation between GSQ score and GPA supports our initial hypothesis that poor sleep quality is associated with lower academic performance for nondepressed students. This hypothesis is also supported by the finding that in our subject population nondepressed students with clinically poor sleep quality had significantly lower GPAs than Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This includes students of all ages but however if you have trouble with writing or coming up with a thesis statement you can always use the closed–open continuum. The closed–open continuum is a structure demonstrating different levels of determining how to propose your thesis and structure your writing. The closed side of the continuum is top down– thesis based prose, this means that you introduce your thesis at the beginning of the introduction. Top down–thesis based consists of your typical five paragraph essay. This also means that you will be introducing your thesis in the introduction paragraph. • 5. Writing in a Foreign Language Essay For a very long time, people have been studying the differences of writing among different cultures. Native speakers write texts which are very different from the texts written by foreign language writers. The main reason is that each culture has its patterns of thinking and it determines the way that they write. As a result, foreign language students need to learn the patterns of the language and the way that native speakers usually develop their ideas. If you want to make texts in a foreign language, you need to study how people arrange their knowledge. American writers, for example, tend to arrange their ideas in a straight line of development. In general, we have a central idea, known as main thesis,...show more content... In order to write in Japanese, you need to follow a circular though. First, you start with the main idea, pointing out your thesis and introducing the ideas to the reader. After that, you get out to the point introducing a new topic. Finally, you get to the main point to conclude. It is common in the oriental culture, where they have a different approach of thinking of the occidental ones. Portuguese writers tend to write a paragraph that contains digressions. They have a central idea but sometimes it is interrupted by some ideas or examples that are far from the main idea. Similarly, a paragraph in Russian often contains digressions. In different cultures, we have different lines of development that are influenced by the patterns of thinking. However, none of them is better than any other, they are only different. According to Bander(1971,27) "Ideas don´t fit together from language to language. Each culture has its own way of thinking." I agree with the author, each culture is influenced by its patterns of thinking. The awareness that rhetorical patterns differ from one culture to another can help us to write in a culture that is not native to us. Robert B. Kaplan, an important professor of applied linguistics at the University of Southern California, highlights that students in ESL programs write texts which are very different from texts written by native speakers. It guided the reader into the keys points of my essay. 29 I've really struggled with writing thesis statements, so what I decided to do was give myself random essays with a topic and write thesis statements on them. When reading my outline of corrections, I realized a lot of minor imperfections. When writing my essay, I just assumed I was writing everything correctly. • 7. Listening Process Essay Listening is one of the most powerful tools of communication and is a process that is used to receive, convey a meaning, and respond to both verbal and nonverbal messages. It is what we choose to do and it requires more work than speaking. Oftentimes, people simply misunderstand the difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is a passive process that takes in sounds and noises and listening is what you choose to do. This selective process includes 5 phases that can be acquired for us to become effective listeners in the future. The 5 phases are attending, understanding, remembering, critically evaluating (listening), and responding. Once the 5 different areas are understood, we will become aware of what needs to change and how we...show more content... The last two factors of attending are to resist tuning out and avoid interruptions. When it comes to tuning out and interrupting, I have a huge dilemma while communicating with others. Back in high school, that was one thing that I was good at; tuning out. I even still struggled with it coming into college. In my first semester at Nassau Community College, a student asked me what we had to get done on a class assignment and I had completely tuned out because I got easily distracted by thinking about what I needed to do when I got home. I knew that tuning out was not a pleasant idea and I should change that before it got out of hand. I keep a constant reminder that blocking mixed thoughts and distractions will accredit me to improve in this area of the listening process. Avoiding interruptions has always been an issue and still is to this day. It only occurs when I'm with family and/or friends but never at school or with teachers. During an encounter with a friend, she was talking about how we don't spend enough time hanging out and after a single minute, I interrupted her with a tangential response. Interrupting interferes with attending and tends to be a barrier for most school–going students. If we want to prevent interruptions from happening, turn–taking should be greatly put into consideration. The next time I communicate with family or friends, I need to keep in mind to patiently wait until it's my turn to speak. The second phase of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

For example, the discharge of heated–up water from thermal and nuclear power plants into a river can cause problems for aquatic organisms, which are fairly used to specific temperatures. The increase in water temperatures could increase their metabolic rates and hence their need for food. This could eventually lead to the depletion of food sources in that water region and in turn cause a reduction in species population in that water region.
