The document discusses enhancing the UN's communication strategies. It identifies three key areas where better communication is needed: global peace and security, development activities, and decolonization/human rights. Strategic recommendations are made, including advocacy/outreach campaigns, strengthening the UN's position, communicating as one unit, and building organizational capacity. Finally, creating a common online communication platform for UN member nations is proposed to help spread information about their work and achieve goals through transparency.

Enhancing the UN’s Communication Strategies
Key communication issues in the UN
The first issue that needs focus in UN communication is global
peace and security (Cornelissen, 2014). The items in this
section aim at keeping the world free from falling into war and
keeping the world safe for all individuals. Such issues include
peacekeeping, disarmament, peace building and conflict
prevention among others. Communication involves informing
the public on the importance of UN peacekeeping missions and
open to the public and governments the standard operating
procedures in UN operations such as peacekeeping missions
(Franke, & Warnecke, 2009). The communication prevents
2. speculations of the UN peacekeeping activities by the public
and governments. In all its activities, the UN should involve the
affected people and society and make prior communication.
The another key area where communication is important is in
development activities. UN’s activities in development include
social, economic and environmental development.
Communication to the public about development activities that
the UN carries out is important to increase the public
involvement in the project which promotes continuity.
Communication with development partners is also necessary to
increase the partnership bond and improve the overall success
of the programs (Novelli, & Hellwig, 2011). Some development
projects that the UN is involved in today include
communication technology, gender issues, youth and persons
with disabilities and environmental conservation programs
among others.
The third communication issue critical to the UN is
decolonization and human rights. The UN campaigns to promote
democracy and human rights could not take route without a
proper communication strategy (Assembly, 2011).
Communication is essential in communities where human rights
are not observed. The UN needs to communicate with
communities on the critical of issues like gender equality,
decolonization, liberty and justice (Balcik et.al, 2010).
Communication is a way of imparting knowledge to the
communities which help to free them.
Strategic Recommendations
Communication is an integral part of the United Nations and
should not be viewed as a supplementary add-on but as a
relevant and value-adding component of all development work.
The importance of communication to the UN will improve the
visibility of the programs that can help the organization to
attain its development goals and mobilize future resources
(UNCG, 2001). However, because of the major communications
challenges and issues that face the UN their objectives face
hardship making hard to attain some of them. The following are
3. some of the strategic recommendation that the UN can put in
place to overcome the communication issues.
· Advocacy and outreach.- I recommend the UN to advocate
messages of mutual concern to their country team and to align
the core audiences with the UN Country Team objectives. The
UN should come up with mass-media campaigns and joint
communications operations. It is a way of reaching as many
people as desired (Singhal, 2003). UN should ensure media
coverage in their activities which will get the Programs and the
experts and the information into the story.
· Strengthen UN position- the UN should focus on making the
organization's point of view on critical development issues
stronger (UNCG AND UNCT, 2008). It can easily attain this by
coordinating standard position on prime issues. The Resident
Coordinator from the UN should have the mandate to talk on
behalf of the UN Country team. Engaging professionally with
the local, regional and the international media will help the
communication process of the organization.
· Communicating as one- the organization can achieve its
communication goals by creating an institutional culture by
improving the ability of the UN to communicate as a single
unit. As an international Body, UN should approach the
communication activities in a professional and coordinated way
(Hallahan et al., 2007). Creating a strong brand identity that
tells everything about the organization.
· Building organizational capacity – United Nations building a
proactive and timely communication system.it can be achieved
by updating the UN information system. Increase the UN
communication expertise all over member nation (Yang et al.,
2010). Finally creating a two-way communication with the
people they are serving to ensure participation and feedback
collection.
Concrete Program Plus Action
Creating a communication platform for all the UN member
nations. The organization might decide to create a common
4. communication ground for all the countries’ teams. With the
new dawn of technology, modern ways of communication such
as social media where a common ground of discussing and
finding a solution to the daily problem is reached. The
communication ground should have a translator to help
delegates from different places all over the world understand
each other. The first step is to provide the members with
gadgets that can be able to connect to the internet and then
creating the platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
where they can easily share what they are doing all over the
world (Servaes, 2008). It would help spread the gospel of good
work they are doing. This way the organization can reach its
global objective very fast through transparency approaches. A
control panel should also be put in place to monitor the flow of
information and the activities of the social media groups. It can
help to prevent the situation from changing from objectivity to
non-issue problems which always happens with the human
beings.
