INTRODUCTION   Gaming consoles were designed for the sole purpose of playing electronic games and nothing else.  Have been around since 1970’s.  Gaming consoles have proved themselves to be the best in digital entertainment.  Video game consoles are now extremely versatile and games can be created for a number of purposes.

  5. 5. Generations   First Generation(1972)  Second Generations(1976)  Third Generations(1983)  Forth Generations(1988)  Fifth Generations(1993)  Sixth Generations(1999)  Seventh Generations(2005)  Eighth Generations(2011)
  6. 6. First Generation  Magnavox released the first Console called the Odyssey in 1972. It was invented by Ralph H. Baer and moderately successful.  Atari’s Pong game released in 1975 caused Magnavox to cancel and downgrade. Magnavox Odyssey Atari’s Pong
  7. 7. Cont…   By the autumn of 1975 Magnavox, bowing to the popularity of Pong, cancelled the Odyssey.  Magnavox then released a scaled down version that played only Pong and hockey, the Odyssey 100.
  8. 8. Second and Third Generation     Fairchild released first cartridge based console. Fairchild Video Entertainment System or VES – 1976 RCA and Atari soon followed Crash of 1977 Companies sell the old and cause others to lose business Fairchild and RCA back out and only Atari and Magnavox remain

Cont…  Atari 2600 • Rebirth • Atari converted arcade games to home console games. • This caused people to gain interest once again. • Crash of 1983 • Overload of consoles and people lose interest • Every company goes bankrupt and drops out. • Nintendo revives it all with the new graphics and its game Super Mario Bros.

Fourth and Fifth Generations   Nintendo was a major console manufacturer, with Sega as major competitor of the Fourth Generation.  Sequels to NES, SMS & Sega Genesis released throughout 80’s & 90’s.  The first Fifth-generation consoles were the Atari Jaguar and the 3DO.  Despite them being more powerful than SNES and Sega Genesis, they did not prove to be a serious threat to them.  It was not until Sega's Saturn, Sony's PlayStation, and the Nintendo 64 were released that fifth generation consoles started to become popular.

Sixth Generation   This generation saw a move towards PC-like architectures in gaming consoles, as well as a shift towards using DVDs for game media.  Sega's Dreamcast released in North America on September 9, 1999 was the company's last video game console, and was the first of the generation's consoles to be discontinued.

Cont..  The Microsoft Xbox was the first console to include an Ethernet port and offered high speed online gaming through the Xbox LIVE service.  The Nintendo GameCube, released November 18, 2001 in North America, was Nintendo's fourth home video game console and the first console by the company to use optical media instead of cartridges  Microsoft Xbox Nintendo GameCube

Cont..  Sony's PlayStation 2 was released in North America on  October 26, 2000 as the follow-up to its highly successful PlayStation, and was also the first home game console to be able to play DVDs.  As of July 2008, 140 million PlayStation 2 units have been sold.   14. 14. Seventh Generation   This generation is based largely on the HighDefinition discs and blue ray hardware in the PS3.  Microsoft kicked off the seventh generation with the release of the Xbox 360 released on November 22, 2005 in the United States. Xbox 360
  15. 15. Cont..   Sony's Play Station 3 was released in Japan on November 11, 2006, in North America on November 17, 2006 and in Europe on March 23, 2007. All PlayStation 3s come with a hard drive and are able to play Blu-ray Disc games and Blu-ray Disc movies out of the box. Sony PlayStation 3

Cont..   The Nintendo Wii was released in North America on November 19, 2006, in Japan on December 2, 2006, in Australia on December 7, 2006, and in Europe on December 8, 2006.  Wii does not support an internal hard drive, but instead uses 512 MB of internal Flash memory and includes support for removable SD card storage.   17. 17. Eighth Generation   The Wii U is an upcoming video game console by Nintendo and will be the successor to the Wii which will be released in 4th quarter of 2012.  Another console, called OUYA and will be released in March, 2013. Nintendo Wii U
