20. Written by Steven Tyler, “Janie’s
Got a Gun”:
is about a girl who
shoots her father because he is
sexually abusing her. Steven
Tyler wrote the lyrics after
reading an article about children
&
who had been killed by guns.

Steven Tyler originally wrote the song in his basement, which was when he
came up with the line "Janie's got a gun." He then sat on it for months,
"waiting for the oracle door to open." Tyler told Rolling Stone it only became
a song about child abuse after, "I looked over at a Time magazine and saw
this article on 48 hours, minute by minute, of handgun deaths in the United
States." He continued: "Then I got off on the child-abuse angle. I'd heard this
woman speaking about how many children are attacked by their mothers
and fathers. It was f---ing scary. I felt, man, I gotta sing about this. And that
was it. That was my toe in the door.“ (http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1350)

22. Hope begins in the dark, the
stubborn hope that if you just
show up and try to do the right
thing, the dawn will come. You
wait and watch and work: You
don't give up.

I’m so glad to be here today. Honored to be asked to talk with you today about social media and helping victims of abuse and neglect. Just so you know a little about me, I am a social worker by training but did my undergrad work in political science. I’m a connector by nature—and training. My father was a masterful connector and I watched him for years, learning all along the way. I’ve been involved with public policy and local budget analysis and advocacy for 15 years and consulted with a number of DC organizations for the past couple of years. Got into social media as a result of boredom and haven’t looked back! 9/30/2011
I’m going to play the first bit of this song and the first person who can tell me what it is will receive a hand-made mug rug! I’ve made them to raise money for Safe Shores, DC’s Child Advocacy Center. I will donate $20 to Safe Shores.
In the old paradigm, the private sector was all about getting our message out, telling our story, pleading with journalists to cover a story we think was important. Lots of organizations spent a lot of time lamenting this in DC. The Washington Post editorial board told my old boss and a few other nonprofit leaders that interest in Metro news was dwindling, especially DC news. Thus less ink to the range of stories, not to mention stories WE cared about.
New organizations, on the other hand, pushed information out to the world.
In this new paradigm we are talking with each other rather than at each other. The new paradigm is about talking with one another, asking questions, providing answers in real time. Actually having a relationship!
