The rise of shareable brands and the sharing economy

  1. Car2go Partner Presentation Deck Welcome and Introductions: Thank you for being here today… How did you get here today? Thank you for sharing that. Now, let me ask a follow up question… Why didn ’t you travel here another way? Thank you…everything you mentioned, those are real world, real legitimate obstacles. After this presentation I believe that you ’ll be able to start thinking differently about how you and your community can get places. Because I know that car2go helps urban transport work better, more conveniently and more affordably. Today we ’ll briefly cover 3 key areas: What carsharing is in general Why car2go is a better way to carshare and Why car2go is good for Portland

As of July 2009, Portland has an estimated population of a little over 580,000. By 2060, the seven-county Portland metro area could have 3.85 million people. That's about the size of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, now, and double the region's current population. This type of growth and the challenges it brings are not specific to Portland alone…

So, another way of looking at urban density through a personal transportation lens looks like this equation here… As more and more people make the move towards city centers, more people, [click] plus more density [click] equals less parking. Because urban mobility can be as much about parking as it is about actually getting somewhere. And since the average number of persons occupying a car (1.59) and has not changed much since 1995, we need solutions that address mobility and parking.(U.S. Department of Energy)

As car owners, you know that each of these expenses continues to rise. In general, the less you drive your car the less you have to pay for these increasing expenses. Carsharing, when it is available, becomes an enticing option to alleviate these costs, whether you simply use your own vehicle less or choose not to own a car at all. In fact, the youngest generation of drivers, those in their 20 ’s and 30’s, are beginning to see car ownership as a relative burden. These “Millennials” are consciously deciding to drive less – in part because the high cost of ownership makes it difficult, but also because they want to protect the environment (Zipcar Millenials Survey, 2010).

Carsharers end up driving 31% less on average than non-carsharers. How? Carsharing encourages drivers to be more efficient with their urban travel. Notes: Carsharing has momentum and fits with larger trends – not just urban growth and environmental consciousness, but consumer trends as well. While purchase and usage trends in the 20 th century tended to focus around the personal accumulation of goods (Conspicuous Consumption) – we bought it, we kept, maybe we even flaunted it – but a lot of times we owned things that we actually used infrequently, that sat there most of the time (not unlike most of our personally owned cars are right now). carsharing fits with the 21 st century trend of collaborative consumption – the sharing of space, stuff, skills and time. Much of the growth of Collaborative Consumption has been made possible due to technological innovation. The internet has given rise to the ability for people to pay for what they need when they need it, keep it as long as they like, and pass it along to someone else. If Ben Franklin ’s concept of the public, subscription library was the analog version of collaborative consumption, services like Netflix, Craigslist, HomeAway – and carsharing - are variations on the theme made possible by a digital culture. ------------------------------ EXTRA: Collaborative consumption — technology-enabled sharing and renting of goods is an important social movement. Like book, movie, and bike sharing or community gardens, collaborative consumption reduces consumption and waste and encourages reuse.

Notes: But let ’s be clear, carsharing as a key element of the broader collaborative consumption movement is a growing trend, not a passing fad. While the concept is still in its infancy, carsharing is a movement that is only gaining momentum. In 2009, there were approximately a million carsharers worldwide. In only 7 years, it is predicted that there will be almost 10 million carsharers. More importantly, of those 10 million, an estimated 4.1 million will be located in North America alone. This isn ’t just something they’ll be doing over in Europe. -------------------------------------------- EXTRA: In fact, the carshare industry will likely surge to $7 billion in Europe and North America by 2016.
