Features - Social Networking
# 1.User Profiles :
It should allow its users to create their own profiles on the portal. It
has to have a username and password so that the user can access
his profile whenever he wants. The profiles serve a dual purpose: one,
they allow friends or contacts to identify members from their profiles;
and two, the data entered by the members is used by Social
Networking Sites to connect with other members who have a similar
background.
3
# 2.Interactive :
There are some websites which offer to play games with the network
that you have. Also they offer you to play a tournament with the
people who are not in your network.
# 3.Community driven :
The social networking sites were developed with an objective of
community concept. That is, you can create an online community of
people & share same interests topics about one or many subjects.
These communities help the users not only to connect with their old
friends but also helps them to find new friends who share the same
interests.
# 4.Emotion content :
Earlier, when people were using internet they only contained
information. However, in today’s social networking world people can
share their emotions in the content that has been posted on the portal.
People can give immediate responses which helps to solve the problem
faster.
# 5.Search :
The object of a social network is to find friends and expand
relationships. Top social networking websites allows members to search
for the other members in a safe and easy-to-use environment.
Common search functions include search by name, city, school & email
address.
4
# 6.Help / Support :
Most social network sites are self-explanatory. However, in case a
user needs help, there needs to be some way to contact the find
webmaster or answer in an FAQs section.
# 7.Free web space & web address :
Each member is provided free web space to publish content. Each
member gets a unique web address that becomes the identity of that
individual or business. The members can then use their web address
or url to promote themselves or their business.
# 8. Notifications and Real time updates :
The Notifications and updates form a very important feature of any
social networking site. The updates can be sent via emails for a new
comment or for further activity on the already published comments. The
notification email typically includes a link that takes the user to
appropriate page/ topic. The notifications help in maintaining and
enhancing the collaborative and conversational spirit of social networking
site.

profile page. To register to LinkedIn, you need to provide personal
information. You can update the profile with your education and job

recommendations from co-workers and bosses.
# 5. Classmates : Classmates.com is different from most social networks,
in the sense that most of its features are available to premium

profile is free and easy. However, most of the advanced features in
Classmates.com are only available to paid users.

be published once a month or even once a day, depending on the
blogger's time and energy for the blog. A blog is a powerful means
for the blogger to establish relationships with stakeholders by sharing

Major Security Issues related with Social Networking
For some social networking sites like facebook, providing real names
and other personal information is encouraged by the site ( page called
profile ). This information usually consists of birth dates, current
address, and telephone numbers. Some sites also allows users to
provide more information about themselves such as interests, hobbies,
favourite books or films, and even relationship status. However, there
are other sites such as Match.com, where most people prefer to be
anonymous. Thus, linking users to their real identity can sometimes be
rather difficult.
# 1. Identity Theft : The users tend to give all the personal information
on the site which may lead to identify theft of the information. E.g., if
the user has given his social security number on the site, the hackers
may use that for malpractices. There have been cases where the
people have stolen photographs displayed on the sites. It has been
advised by everyone not to upload too much information on the site or
should hide such information from people whom we don’t know in
person.
# 2. Employment : Issues relating to privacy and employment are
becoming a concern with regards to social networking sites. If a
potential employer uses a social sites to check out a candidate and
then rejects that person based on what they see, he or she could be
charged with discrimination.
12
# 3. Online Victimization : Social networks are designed for individuals to
socially interact with the other people over the internet. However, some
individuals engged in undesirable online social behaviour create a
negative impact on the other people online experiences. It has created
a wide range of online interpersonal victimization.
# 4. Phishing Scams : Just like malapps, the amount of people getting
hit with phishing scams is pretty high (over 50% of Internet users get
at least one phishing email per day). Through these scams many
people end up divulging important information such as credit card
details, usernames, email passwords. If you are concerned about
phishing issues have a look at the Anti-Phishing Working Group’s
website for more info.
