Transmedia enables a
story to go beyond the
pages of a book or the
screen of a TV. Simply
put, transmedia is the
technique of creating a
story experience that is
told using multiple
platforms and formats like
games, audio, video, and
social media. Each
platform tells a standalone
narrative but all stay true
to the core story world.
Look at how transmedia could create a
story world around the famous TV show,
Heidi.
What is STORY2023?
…a competition
STORY2023 is a transmedia storytelling competition for students of
Swiss higher education institutions. Participants are asked to create a
transmedia story around the theme of the future—2023.
…a celebration
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, swissnex San Francisco wants to
invite the future generations to look ahead and get inspired about
what’s coming next.
Why STORY2023?
What’s the future of content creation and storytelling?
Transmedia is one answer.
STORY2023 aims to:
- Encourage transmedia storytelling among the future generations in
Switzerland
- Create a Swiss-American transmedia community
- Enhance visibility as pioneers in this field for all the initiative’s
stakeholders.

STORY2023 is much more than just a competition, it’s also a resource
for knowledge and a platform for discussions.

What’s to be expected for 2023? What will be the stories of tomorrow
and how will they be told?
Who are the participants?
Requirements
Participants must be students
of a Swiss University or
University of Applied
Sciences.
Graduates from 2013 can
participate too.
Participants can compete as
individuals or teams up to 3
people.
Potential profiles
The competition is
interdisciplinary and
educational, it is open to all
students that have a story to
share about the future,
already-transmedia-experts
as well as first-timers.
Students with interest in new
technologies, content
creation, media production,
storytelling, and
communication are more
likely to take the challenge.

* Participants can start thinking
about the project before June
1st. However, full information
will be available on the website
from that day on. They can join
anytime during the competition
as long as they submit their
transmedia story before the
August 31st deadline.
Rules
 Any text/audio in the story must be in English
 The story should show a unique vision of the future with the year
2023 as a key milestone
 The story must use a minimum of three platforms, though
contestants are welcome to employ more. Possible platforms
include, but are not limited to, text, comics, graphic stories, motion
comics, images, mobile apps, games, audio, video, ARG
(Augmented Reality Game), posters, flyers, social media, and email
 The story has to be submitted in a digital form (link).
The rules are subject to change until June 1st.
Jury
Projects will be judged on precise content and form criteria (made
public June 1st) by a Swiss-American jury.

swissnex San Francisco is a platform for the exchange of knowledge
and ideas part of a network of outposts, with locations in Bangalore,
Boston, Shanghai, and Singapore. This public-private venture and
initiative of Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Education, Research,
and Innovation (SERI), is managed as an annex of the Consulate
General of Switzerland in San Francisco.

researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, and thought leaders so that

  • 2. Trans…what? Transmedia enables a story to go beyond the pages of a book or the screen of a TV. Simply put, transmedia is the technique of creating a story experience that is told using multiple platforms and formats like games, audio, video, and social media. Each platform tells a standalone narrative but all stay true to the core story world. Look at how transmedia could create a story world around the famous TV show, Heidi.
  • 3. What is STORY2023? …a competition STORY2023 is a transmedia storytelling competition for students of Swiss higher education institutions. Participants are asked to create a transmedia story around the theme of the future—2023. …a celebration To celebrate its 10th anniversary, swissnex San Francisco wants to invite the future generations to look ahead and get inspired about what’s coming next.
  • 4. Why STORY2023? What’s the future of content creation and storytelling? Transmedia is one answer. STORY2023 aims to: - Encourage transmedia storytelling among the future generations in Switzerland - Create a Swiss-American transmedia community - Enhance visibility as pioneers in this field for all the initiative’s stakeholders.
  • 5. Why is it different? It is interdisciplinary Transmedia brings together a wide range of expertise. It is educational STORY2023 is much more than just a competition, it’s also a resource for knowledge and a platform for discussions. It is inspiring What’s to be expected for 2023? What will be the stories of tomorrow and how will they be told?
  • 6. Who are the participants? Requirements Participants must be students of a Swiss University or University of Applied Sciences. Graduates from 2013 can participate too. Participants can compete as individuals or teams up to 3 people. Potential profiles The competition is interdisciplinary and educational, it is open to all students that have a story to share about the future, already-transmedia-experts as well as first-timers. Students with interest in new technologies, content creation, media production, storytelling, and communication are more likely to take the challenge.

Schedule Total duration of the project Date: November 2012 - November 2013 Competition begins* Date: June 1, 2013 Competition ends Date: August 31, 2013 Jury deliberation Dates: September 2-15, 2013 Announcement of prizewinners Dates: Thursday September 19, 2013 * Participants can start thinking about the project before June 1st. However, full information will be available on the website from that day on. They can join anytime during the competition as long as they submit their transmedia story before the August 31st deadline.

Rules  Any text/audio in the story must be in English  The story should show a unique vision of the future with the year 2023 as a key milestone  The story must use a minimum of three platforms, though contestants are welcome to employ more. Possible platforms include, but are not limited to, text, comics, graphic stories, motion comics, images, mobile apps, games, audio, video, ARG (Augmented Reality Game), posters, flyers, social media, and email  The story has to be submitted in a digital form (link). The rules are subject to change until June 1st.

  • 12. About swissnexSF swissnex San Francisco is a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas part of a network of outposts, with locations in Bangalore, Boston, Shanghai, and Singapore. This public-private venture and initiative of Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI), is managed as an annex of the Consulate General of Switzerland in San Francisco. Our global perspective and local expertise allow us to anticipate and nurture fruitful collaborations and align the best academics, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, and thought leaders so that relationships can flourish.
