Is The Glass Half Full Or Half Empty?
1. Is The Glass Half Full, Or Half Empty?
by S.W. Seeds | on February 27, 2013
We have all heard the phrase looking at the glass, is it half full or is it half empty. The
answer is supposed to directly reflect as to how one is looking at a situation. Are they
looking at it with a positive attitude or with a negative attitude? I am here to present
another perspective.
Whether the glass is half full or half empty really doesn’t matter. What matters is what
you do with the glass. Let me explain.
To an overly thirsty person, a half full glass of water may seem like a negative, for
there may not be enough there to quench a thirst. To a child who is told he has to
finish all his fruit juice before he can have dessert, the half empty glass looks a lot
easier to finish than a full glass!
It’s definitely a mind set. If you are thirsty, go fill up the glass and drink! If you desire to
have something and you don’t have enough money in the bank account to purchase
it, figure out what you need to do to make the extra money and go buy it!
Many times, when someone says I’d love to have one of those, but I can’t afford it,
what they are really saying is, this isn’t high enough on my priority list. There are
exceptions of course, but more times than not the actual amount of work it takes to
get what we desire outweighs the actual reward of fulfilling our desire!
Let me repeat that. More times than not, the actual amount of work it takes to get
what we desire outweighs the actual reward of fulfilling our desire!
Only when value exceeds cost will one make the commitment to move forward. When
you want something so much, that no matter what it takes, you are going to make it
happen, that is when value exceeds cost!
When value exceeds cost, it doesn’t matter if the glass is half full, half empty or if
there is even a glass at all! When value exceeds cost, the mindset is that whatever it
takes is what will be done to make it happen.
There are many, many things in my life that I can look back and acknowledge that
2. value exceeded cost.
For example, I can look back as a teenager wanting to learn how to play the piano.
We didn’t even own a piano! But I could envision what it would mean to one day being
a performing artist.
Spending countless hours a day at the keyboard seemed like a small price to pay to
one day become a concert pianist! Value exceeded cost.
Many would have looked at the fact that such I got a late start in life as being a
negative. It would almost be like the glass being half empty.
Looking back, if anything, I would have to say the glass was half full as I had the real
desire and want to master the piano. I’m quite sure at the time, though, I really didn’t
care if the glass was half full or half empty! All I knew was I wanted to play the piano
and entertain others. I had a desire to be the best pianist I could be! Again, value
exceeded cost.
The same can be said of when I decided to become my own boss and start my own
business. The cost of what it takes to truly be successful is far less than the value
of the reward of being my own boss!
It is a well known fact that attitude is everything. As Henry Ford once said, “if you
think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re exactly right.”
If you really have to make a choice, don’t just think you can, know you can! Whether
the glass is half full or half empty, is just dialogue.
