Discuss the next dialogue ……….
Explanation
i. There are three kinds of introduction here.
The first one is very casual. The second one is less casual.
The third one is the most formal.
ii. "How do you do" is not the same az " How are you?"
How do you do is only used when people meet each other for the first
time. It's a ritual formula and has no meaning.it is said with the same
intonation by both people.
iii. The stress shift from meet" in I'm very glad to meet you"to 'you' in Thank
you' I'm very glad to meet you.'
Cultural points
- In English, it is more points to offer personal information about
yourself before asking someone else.e.g
- My name's Jane. What's yours?
- I'm from Japan. How about you?
- I live with my parents. Do you live with yours?
- Personal /private questions like'how old are you?
Are you married? Etc...are not usually polite unless the questioner has
a good reason for asking them.
10. Practice
You are at a party with a friend. Most of the people at the party do not know each
other. Move around with your friend introducing yourself and your friend to
different people.
Touchy topic
In Britain, when people meet to each other for the first time they taik about things
like family, work, school,or sports. They ask questions like ,Do you have any
brothers or sisters? Where do you work? What school do you go to? Do you like
sports? Where do you come from? Where do you live? They are polite
questions. They are not personal or private questions.
But some things are personal or private and questions about them are not
polite.People don't ask questions about person's salary.They don't ask how much
someone is paid for something.
It is ok to ask children how old are they are, but it is not polite to ask older people
their age. It is also not polite to ask people questions about politics or relegion
unless you know them very well.People don't ask unmarried people "why are you
single? And they don't ask a married couple with no children "why don't you have
any children?
Pair Work
Look at the following questions. Are they polite or not polite when you meet
someone for the first time in Britain?
a. What does your wife do?
b. Do you believe in God?
c. How much money do you earn?
d. How many children do you have?
e. Why aren't you married?
f. Do you like football?
g. How old are Mr Jack?
h. Are you conservative?
i. How much was your watch?
11. Look at the questions again. Are they polite or not polite in South Sulawesi.
