REGION
FIELD OF
SOCIAL
DISCOURSE
MEDIUM ATTITUDE
3. Types of variation
The first two types of variation relate
to the language user and the last three
types relate to language use.
Varieties according to region have a
well-established label: dialects.
There are as many dialects as many
people are in the world.
5. STANDARD ENGLISH
There is basically a single spelling and punctuatio
system throughout: with two minor subsystems.
British English American English
(BrE) (AmE)
Both have grammatical differences such as AmE has two past
participles for get and BrE has only one.
Also they have lexical differences, for example: While radio
sets have had valves in BrE, but tubes in AmE, television sets
have tubes in both.
