Mandate for AYUSH Resource Centre, Alternative Medicines, Marketing of Raw Materials and Processed materials, Central Government Schemes, Department of AYUSH & National Medicinal Plants Board
2. BACKGROUND NOTE
Central government is very keen on tapping this potential so that only
the adequate inputs for the different systems of medicines are
available in the country but also help in the economic growth of the
region. On part of Central Government sufficient funding has been
made available to the states. To facilitate this process NMPB,
Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has
set up a resource centre for North East region at Guwahati.
3. Role of AYUSH Resource Centre

Coordination with the state governments and sensitizing about the
schemes of NMPB & Department of AYUSH and facilitate them in
making the proposals/state action plan.
Assist the state governments in identification of state agencies/
NGO’s/ organizations for operationalisation of schemes of NMPB &
Department of AYUSH and also facilitate them in making the
proposals.
Follow up with the state governments on the schemes/project of
NMPB/ Department of AYUSH under implementation.
Creation of Database of Medicinal plants, Cultivators, Traders,
Institutions & other stakeholders in the states.
Help the department if AYUSH in monitoring utilization of funds &
securing UC’s from state & other agencies.
Report on the progress of various projects & construction work, if
any going on.
4. Facilitating the North Eastern States

The Department of AYUSH including National Medicinal Plants
Board (NMPB) has a number of schemes to support AYUSH
industries, State Governments, AYUSH institutions in the North
East, Forest/Horticulture departments & organization whereby these
organizations can access Central funding for the benefit of the
region and thereby help in improving the health infrastructure in the
region.
The Resource Center will understand the problem & hurdles faced
by the states in utilizing funds and implementation of Schemes.
The centre will inform the State Government & the other
organization about the scheme and AYUSH Resource Centre help
them in making the project proposal in a time bounded manner.
5. Fresh Proposal
In order to utilize the funds available in NE states, following are

Plantation of rare, endangered species & threatened species
by the Department of Forest & NGO’s. And also setting up of
nurseries by PSU’s.
Primary processing, storing and marketing support for
medicinal plants collected by tribals healers, cultivators etc, by
the various stakeholders in the state.
Research based project could be submitted by the R&D
institutes, institutions & other experts in the state.
Organization of workshops, seminars & training for common
people
Setting up of AYUSH colleges, schools, universities & AYUSH
hospitals and dispensaries.

As a Resource Centre we are collecting information regarding
cultivators, traders and manufacturers for making the marketing tieup all over India.
We have already prepared a list of registered medicinal plant
cultivators, traders and manufacturers.
In our list more than 150 farmers, SHG and 50 numbers of traders
name are added.
The stakeholders can consult with us and the Resource Center will
help in every possible way, right form assisting the technical details
and making the detailed project report.
12. List of some available economically important
plants and their products
Assam is rich in flora and fauna. The climate of Assam is suitable
for the cultivation of various plants which have tremendous
medicinal and economic value.
Extraction of herbal oils from oil rich plants of commercial value.
Some of those plants are listed bellow which have the potentiality
to grow here in abundance and can be used in preparing different
prospects.
Resins – Saldhuna, Dhuna, Ketera, Charcoal, Broom grasses
Sugar yielding plants – Sugarcane, Sugar-beet, Palmyra etc
Rubber yielding plants – Ficus elatica (Assam rubber)
Narcotic yielding plants – Tobacco, Cannabis sativa yields ganja,
bhang etc
Fibre yielding plants – Cotton, Jute etc

14. Conclusion
There is immense scope to set up small industries not only in the
medicinal plant related sectors but also in the different sectors.
It might be profitable venture to set up home based Industry for
making Handlooms items and Food processing Industries for
making Jam, Jelly, sauces , Pickles.
Rubber band producing industry, Jute processing Industries for
making Jute yarn, Jute fabrics, Jute bags, Packaging Industry, Dairy
Industries, Chemical Industries for making detergent powder, Liquid
Indigo, Shoe Polish etc.
Both Central Government and State Government are providing
various schemes to develop the Industrial sector.
This will help to develop the economy of the States and also help in
employment in the rural areas.

As a Resource Centre we are preparing a database of medicinal
plants and the stakeholders not only for Assam for all the seven
sisters states.
We are available to provide technical assistance regarding
medicinal plant.
We will help in making Project Proposals, Detailed Project Report
etc.
We are also working on marketing tie up with the cultivators and
trader, manufacturers as well.
