Introduction
Today, we are going to address one of the UN goals, “Environmental Sustainability”. What we are going to do is. How are we going to do it? We are
Bridge:
why hasn’t it been adopted widely by all the farmers?
Cost
[Business.. Profit… Answering to BOD…]
Making this ethical issue into a economically viable solution with application of IT.
Bridging..
While there are many ways of doing organic farming, we identify that vermicomposting has the unique ability to give you better harvest.
COST is everything
Bridge: What our system aims to do is to
Bridge : We interviewed an organic farmer in cameron highland and horticulture and landscape management in kranji to find out more about the challenges of organic and vermicomposting
Ensure ideal condition through sensors and alert system
Reduce lag time
Gadget and mobility
Forecasting
Accurate forecasting is important for farmer to plan their fertilizer consumption needs.
Makes use of Windows Azure – cloud computing – to power the mathematical calculations load
Why use azure?
ability to scale to multiple farms or add new bins – limitless scalability
extremely reliable
cost savings to farmer as they don’t require expensive hardware in their facilities
Predictive model is based on historical yield result and research papers.
Bridge:
Wrapped up
Statistics to show that organic fertilizer is as cheap as chemical fertilizers. (self-grown, commercial org, chemical buyer)
Demonstration
We subsidize the small farmers from the profit of large commercial farms
Bridge:
Why do we need to subsidize the small independent farms?
Proof that we need to target small independent farmers
The world picture
Bridge:
With that, we have shown you how our project can change the way the world farm, by turning the ethical issue of saving the environment into an economical issue. By driving down the cost of organic fertilizers, farmers will now have the incentive to switch to green farming and hence, reverse the loss of environmental resources.
