3. What is your favorite Christmas gift? That may be a difficult
question to answer. Several years ago, I took some money that
I had received for Christmas, and after Christmas, I purchased
a train. Each year, when Zella and I finish decorating the
Christmas tree, we set the train around the tree. So many
wonderful memories have been made with that train around the tree. While
our children were still at home, we would turn off all the lights in the house
except for the Christmas tree lights and lay down on the floor and watch
the train go around and around. Now, the grandchildren love watching the
train. Last year, when our granddaughter, Hadley, came to the house, I placed
a couple of couch pillows on the floor and lay down with her in front of the
train. Hadley lay on one pillow; I lay on the other. We watched the train
go around and around. When I started to get up, little Hadley reached out
her hand and pushed me back down on the pillow.
Each time I would start to rise up, she reached out
her little hand and firmly pushed me back down. It
certainly made for a precious memory. When any
of our grandchildren come to the house during the
Christmas holidays, we place the couch pillows on the
floor, and we all watch the train.
Of course, our most favorite Christmas gift that our Heavenly Father gives us
is His Son, Jesus Christ! Through His Son, our Heavenly Father provides very
special gifts, especially the gift of the forgiveness of our sins, the gift of the
Holy Spirit, and the gift of eternal life. These gifts just keep on giving; just like
the train keeps going around and around. One of the most precious gifts that
we may give is forgiveness.
In his book, The Peacemaker, Ken Sande writes that forgiveness makes four
promises.
Promise one states,“I will not think about this incident.”
Promise two states,“I will not bring up this incident again and use it against
you.”
Promise three states,“I will not talk to others about this incident.”
Promise four states,“I will not allow this incident to stand between us or
hinder our personal relationship.”
Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each
other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you” (NASB). Forgiveness
may be the best Christmas gift that we could give or receive.

4. In an environment where we find people attending Sunday
morning church worship services less frequently (some only
attend one time per month and consider themselves active
members of a church) and concert events in even smaller
numbers than in years past, I would like
to offer some reasons why I feel we should still offer
Christmas concerts. (This could apply to Easter and
other seasonal concerts, too.)
All of us as Christians, whether new converts or
“seasoned saints”, need to be reminded of the
humble beginnings of our Savior’s walk on this earth! Yes, we certainly
celebrate with the shepherds, angels and the wise men, the arrival of Jesus,
our King. But as we also know, Jesus came to us as a child in very difficult
circumstances. I can honestly say I do not know any other baby that was born
in an unsterile barn with animals around after their mother rode countless
miles on a donkey and was refused lodging in an inn. Yes, we have a lot of
music that focuses on celebration, but we also have so many beautiful songs
that remind us of the intimacy and humility of our Savior’s arrival. We need to
be reminded what God did for us in those humble circumstances. We strive
to do that in our concerts.
Secondly, Christmas concerts offer us a wonderful (and not so intimidating)
opportunity to invite people who do not know Jesus. I have invited my
entire street in past years and some have actually attended. Even those who
did not attend thanked me for invitation and it gave me the opportunity to
touch their lives through conversation. Music is a wonderful vehicle to share
the truth of the Gospel. Jesus came to us in humble surroundings, lived in
difficult times and died a humiliating death for ALL of us. Your friends and
family will leave our concerts feeling a sense of hope in their lives and doors
may be opened for future contacts with them about Jesus.
Thirdly, we need to honor the hard work of our Christian
musicians as they offer their gifts to the Lord in worship and as
they encourage you.
Finally, it is good for us to be together. We gather as families
for different holidays and as Christians, we are part of God’s
family. We should look forward to being together for special
opportunities for worship and celebration. Please don’t miss out on
this year’s concert events.

Why Do We Offer Christmas Concerts?
5. What’s in a name? Much more than most people think.
Names are much more than a collection of sounds and
syllables meant to distinguish us from others. Names bestow
meaning and belonging. Often in the Old Testament we
see men and women living up or down to their given name
- almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. In many cultures today, unlike our
own, the names of children reflect the values and beliefs of the parents.
I know it might sound crazy, but I think it is no coincidence that many
preachers and pastors throughout history were named John and God saw
fit to make me a minister as well.
God had a reason in having Joseph and Mary name their son Jesus. In
Matthew 1:21 we read the angel’s words to Joseph:
“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he
will save his people from their sins.”
(Matthew 1:21, ESV)
God wanted his name to be Jesus. But why? Because
he would save his people from their sins. From this short
statement God tells us the reason Jesus came to earth.
Jesus was born to die.
He did not come primarily to set an example for us.
Indeed Jesus is the only sinless human being that has ever lived. He loved
perfectly while He walked this earth. He was selfless and humble in all His
ways. He glorified God with every breath and step he took. But that was
not His primary mission. Something greater was at stake.
Jesus did not come to heal people, to feed people, or to do miracles.
He did not come to meet temporary needs. For sure, He did meet some
of those needs while He was here. He raised the dead, gave hope to the
hopeless, and second chances to the down and out. But even this was not
His primary mission. There was a deeper need.
Jesus came to take the punishment from God that we deserve so that
we could escape it. Why do we celebrate Christmas? Why do we celebrate
the birth of the Son of God? Because of what it would eventually lead to.
We celebrate Christmas because that baby grew up and died to save His
people from their sins. The birth of Christ was also the birth of hope. We
celebrate because the good news of the gospel was laying in that
manger that night. Merry Christmas!

Be Kind this Christmas
I think we can agree that here in the United States
Christmas is one of the most exciting holidays, with
both adults and children anxiously awaiting its arrival.
Countdown apps, holiday wish lists, big toy books, and
decoration planning, it’s all there just looming beginning
around Halloween. I, too, love the bustling season, with its energetic
carols and constant merry-making with friends.
But what about those that dread Christmas? What about those that
don’t have the friends, the children, or the home to decorate? Please
understand, I’m not trying to turn this into a depressing article, I’m merely
trying to broaden our understanding. There are those, even in our own
church, who spend Christmas alone, who dread each year because it
highlights that loneliness in their lives. I’ve mentioned before flying on
Christmas Day to my dad’s house, and my mother using that day to work.
We would see so many other individuals that just felt it was another day
of the year because they didn’t have anyone to spend it with. There are
other families who struggle to provide even small gifts for their loved
ones and they may be people that you wouldn’t expect. My husband had
an employee at a job a few years ago who was completely without the
funds to make any sort of Christmas for their 3 children (the entire staff
came together and helped provide that.)
Why am I bringing this up? Simply for us to remember during this crazy
time that there are those around us who are struggling. Those grumpy,
angry people you encounter might be that way because this time of year
is their worst. Take time to be pleasant to those around you, offer up a
heartfelt‘how are you’and listen to the response. We as a church do so
many things for those that may be unable to provide gifts or food at this
season, and I am so grateful to always be a part of that.
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ
Jesus: Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God
something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
(Philippians 2:5-7) Be kind to all those around you this holiday season
and remember that not one of us are above the other, we are all His
children. Merry Christmas!

I love Christmas decorations. Since I was a child we spent
time decorating our house and yard for Christmas. We
traveled around as a family as we were wowed with the
newest displays. Now with our family these traditions
continue. Starting the Sunday after Thanksgiving we begin
pulling out all our stuff from the attic, checking lights, and picking out
our Christmas Tree. We don’t waste
a single moment since the month of
December goes by quickly. We want
to make sure we get the full impact
of the season from our decorations.
We also want the full experience from
everyone else’s hard work. Every year
we make a request on Facebook for
the“Don’t Miss”displays in Lexington,
take a family trip to the horse park,
and take in the sights and sounds of
the fire station on Harrodsburg Road.
In recent years I have shared about my uncle that had nearly 500,000
Christmas lights on his half acre of land. The yard was covered with yard
ornaments, showcases, and Christmas characters. It was a well known
display in the Cleves, Ohio, area called Candy Land. For many people that
traveled through the drive thru display it was a fun tradition. For my uncle
and his immediate family it was like their personal mission to share joy
with others. As extended family, each year we looked forward to seeing
just how many new things he added to the display and how he would fit
it all on to his yard. Sometimes it was very impressive how he managed to
make it all work and other times the organization just wasn’t as clean and
neat. Either way- it was Candy Land and people came from all over to see
it.
To do a display like this was a full year planning. Immediately after
Christmas my uncle went to every store he could and bought out their
clearance items. Then, he stored everything in a specially remodeled
garage. Throughout the year they would plan, order, and shop
at yard sales. They had to plan ahead to add power to their

Prepare Your Heart continued
house each year to handle the electrical load. As soon as the month
of November arrived it was time to get to work. The entire family was
committed to pulling out and checking lights and electrical cords. They
began laying out each item as the plan called for. It didn’t take them very
long to get everything gathered together, layed out, and powered up.
Every year people invest heavily into making sure their Christmas
decorations are top notch. They don’t want the lights to go out on them
or to be embarrassed by their neighbor. In fact in some places there are
even competitions for the best set up.
Is this the same way we prepare our hearts and minds spiritually for
Christmas? Do we start the day after New Year’s searching for the lost
soul that was skipped during the holidays? Do we map out the perfect
opportunities to share the Gospel message with a friend, co-worker, or
even neighborhood enemy? Do we make a plan to reach so many more
people this year than we did last year? Do we invest financially into
deepening our relationship with God during this season by finding a new
devotional or study guide?
What did Jesus really mean when he said… “Do
not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where
moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break
in and steal. 20
But store up for yourselves treasures
in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy,
and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21
For
where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21
Do you think this also includes our hearts and
homes at Christmas?
Merry Christmas everyone!

Gift Allocation
The“What If”Fund will be retired at the end of this year. Why
wait? Because some may still want to fulfill their commitment to the
campaign, plus the offering envelopes distributed through the end of
the year still list that option. In these last few weeks, funds designated
toward“What If”will be moved to the General Fund. If you have an
automatic contribution set up through online giving, you will want to
change that before the end of the year.
We also want to give you an update regarding the Deacons’Fund. The
Deacons’Fund is very healthy. At the end of October, the balance in
the Deacons Fund was a little over $78,000. Our Elders believe this is
enough to meet the foreseeable needs of our congregation. For this
reason, they have established a‘cap’of $80,000 on the balance of the
Deacons’Fund. Any amounts contributed above this amount will be
moved to the General Fund. These actions are in accordance with the
Gift Acceptance Policy of Tates Creek Christian Church. If you have
questions, or would like a copy of this policy, please contact the church

I often take walks down the one lane
country road where we live. It’s very
peaceful with views of rolling hills, open
fields, and grazing cattle. This past year the
Holy Spirit prompted me to use this time
to be still and listen for His voice. I must
confess, much of my time in prayer has been
one sided with me doing the talking.
Learning to still my mind and listen to the
ever present Spirit of God is an on going
process but I am strengthened as He works
to renew and restore my soul.
As I look on the beauty of creation,
the Holy Spirit reminds me of scripture
passages, praise songs, and hymns of old.
He often gives me words or phrases which I
write down and date when I get back home.
I love how He later clarifies and connects the
dots through His Word, worship, and godly
counsel of others. I am learning to stay fixed
and focused on Him in this ever-changing
world of distractions. I encourage you to
take time to be still in God’s Presence, listen
for the voice of the Spirit, and let your soul
be renewed and restored in the process!

14. I can’t imagine a better experience for a first mission trip and first trip
outside the United States. Being part of the team that went to Myanmar,
was a large step outside my comfort zone which was rewarded with one
of the best experiences of my life.
Our team was made up of seven from Tates
Creek, one from Church of the Savior, and
our leader, Bob Drane from Hopeful Hearts
Foundation. We spent some time together in
preparation before leaving, but really bonded
while we were gone for the 10-day trip. We
laughed, cried, worked, played, praised, repented,
and together experienced the journey God had
planned for us. One of the common thoughts we
discussed was each of us wondering exactly how
we were going to contribute to this team, but during the course of our
time together God showed all of us the role that each of us was to fulfill.
To see and feel so used by God was a very special part of this experience.
We went knowing that we would spend several days with many
orphaned children and try, in multiple ways, to touch them and improve
their lives. We were not disappointed. We saw and provided small gifts
to over 250 different children. In leading VBS in two different locations
for a total of more than 200 kids, we made
a significant investment of our time. We
were not prepared however, for the joy and
intensity with which these kids live. They
absolutely“blew us away”with their singing.
They sing with tremendous energy, passion,
meaning, and volume. Worship is a real part
of their lives, even from young ages. Our
projects were designed to help with their
ongoing sustainability. Sewing machines
and sewing classes for the older girls, a
barbed wire fence around the Myanmar
Christian Village Property to protect their livestock and crops, planting
jackfruit trees that should bear fruit within three years, and painting the
Youth building at Samuel Thang’s church.

15. Throughout our trip, we learned to be flexible and adjust our planned
schedule based on current needs or other circumstances. By far, the best
adjustment and the highlight of the trip came on the final day of VBS at
the second location. During the opening program, Samuel suggested
we offer an invitation and 23 children responded. While some of us
continued with VBS, others on the team worked with Samuel to craft a
makeshift baptistery. They were successful and before lunch we baptized
all 23 kids. It was a wonderful day, when grace came like a flood!
Thank you for your support of this trip and your ongoing support of the
ministry of Hopeful Hearts!
