development, strengthening, and enhancement of the overall enterprise data management

• Encompasses process areas designed to help an organization achieve strong participation
across the organization for critical decisions affecting the data assets.Data Governance
• Defines the process areas designed to provide the means for an organization to fully
understand the nature and quality of the data under management, as well as mechanisms to
evaluate, prevent, and remediate defects, to assure that the quality of data meets business
purposes and the organization’s strategic objectives.
Data Quality
• Encompasses process areas designed to help an organization ensure that data requirements
are fully specified; data are traceable through all of the business processes that produce or
consume it; data changes and their processes are managed; and data sources are selected
based on requirements, well controlled, and verified as authoritative.
Data Operations
• Deals with process areas designed to help an organization design an optimal data layer to
meet present and future business objectives; establish and implement well-crafted,
enforceable standards; select a platform and supporting technologies that meet scope and
performance requirements; integrate disparate sources of data; and manage historical and
aged data effectively.

Processes are planned and executed in accordance with policy. A set of standard processes is employed and consistently followed. Process metrics have been defined and are used for data management. The DMM 𝑆𝑀 has been designed to cover all areas of data management, from strategy to architecture 4 • The Data Management Strategy category encompasses process areas designed to focus on development, strengthening, and enhancement of the overall enterprise data management program. Data Management Strategy • Encompasses process areas designed to help an organization achieve strong participation across the organization for critical decisions affecting the data assets.Data Governance • Defines the process areas designed to provide the means for an organization to fully understand the nature and quality of the data under management, as well as mechanisms to evaluate, prevent, and remediate defects, to assure that the quality of data meets business purposes and the organization’s strategic objectives. Data Quality • Encompasses process areas designed to help an organization ensure that data requirements are fully specified; data are traceable through all of the business processes that produce or consume it; data changes and their processes are managed; and data sources are selected based on requirements, well controlled, and verified as authoritative. Data Operations • Deals with process areas designed to help an organization design an optimal data layer to meet present and future business objectives; establish and implement well-crafted, enforceable standards; select a platform and supporting technologies that meet scope and performance requirements; integrate disparate sources of data; and manage historical and aged data effectively. TO HAVE A STRATEGIC PLAN TO IMPROVE DATA QUALITY  Firms undertake strategic planning based on 𝑫𝑴𝑴 𝑺𝑴 to quickly build an actionable strategic plan that is grounded in a holistic understanding of strengths, weaknesses, best practices and enterprise priorities. TO KNOW WHICH DM INVESTMENTS ARE MOST IMPORTANT  Firms perform assessments based on DMM 𝑆𝑀 to prioritize investments to improve data management with greater clarity on which investments will have the greatest impact on targeted capabilities and business goals and support the business case for funding. TO BASELINE, MEASURE, ANALYZE AND REPORT PROGRESS  Firms conduct regular assessments based on DMM 𝑆𝑀 so they can monitor and report data management improvements to stakeholders, data consumers and regulators in a manner that is consistent and aligned to industry standards.  Ongoing assessments are also used to objectively measure and demonstrate the impact of data management practices and programs. TO BENCHMARK AGAINST PEERS AND WITHIN THE FIRM  Firms can utilize assessments based on the DMM 𝑆𝑀 to benchmark specific capabilities, locations, and organizational units against each other to understand internal leading and lagging practices.  As the industry completes more assessments, firms will be able to leverage DMM 𝑆𝑀 assessments to benchmark capabilities against peer organizations.
