92. World Cup: a brief history
The competition was created by Frenchman Jules Rimet
in 1928, after having taken control of the most important
institution in world football: FIFA (Federation
International Football Association). Since 1930, when it
first took place in Uruguay, the tournament happens
every four years.
The first World Cup had the participation of only 13
teams that were invited by FIFA without preliminary
match, as it happens at present. The Brazil reached the
final against Uruguay and a draw would give the title to
our country, but the Uruguayan national team beat Brazil
2-1 and became champion.
93. The break from tradition happened only between the
years 1942 and 1946 due to the Second World War. With
Europe in reconstruction, the 5th World Cup in 1950 took
place in Brazil, but the champion was Uruguay.
Brazil won its first title in the World Cup eight years
later, in 1958, in Sweden where appeared to the world,
playing for the Brazilian team, Edson Arantes do
Nascimento, Pelé.
In 1962, in Chile, the Brazilian team won the cup for the
second time. In 1970, in Mexico, Brazil became, for the
third time, world champion by beating Italy 4-1. When it
becomes a three-times champion, Brazil was in definitive
possession of Jules Rimet trophy. After 1970, Brazil stayed
24 years without a title. The victory recurred in 1994
World Cup in the United States.
94. Our national team beat Italy in an exciting penalty
match. Four years later, Brazil reaches the final again, but
lost the title to the host country: France. Today, the
country is proud to be a five-time winner, the most
successful World Cup team.
So far, 19 World Cup editions have taken place. In 2010,
for the first time in history, the World Cup was held in
Africa continent, in South Africa.
In this 20th edition, 32 teams will compete in 12 host
cities.
