Everyone is concerned about being politically correct these days, and
that is a good thing. But can make team building activities a little more
difficult. The planning of politically correct team building activities will
take a few more minutes, but will make sure that everyone is happy
with the results. The truth is most team building activities are politically
correct; they are games meant to bond and unite people, rather then
cause conflict. There are some things that you need to be aware of
when you are making an effort to provide such team building activities.
Great ways to make sure you are team building the right way
Makes sure nobody is offended: When anyone gets offended, it is
defeating the purpose of the game. These games were meant to create
team unity not division. It is best to stick with non confrontational
games that use basic wording and very little stereotypes.
Stereotypes: Although most people are not offended by these, some
people may be. Make the extra effort to not use the misconceptions
when you are team building, as some people could be offended.
Segregation: When you are creating teams and groups do not choose
obvious groupings. Pairing cultures together or religions on one team,
will lead to conflict and issues. This is not only not politically correct,
but is demeaning to those involved. Try to choose groups who do not
often work together, and groups who may have trust issues.

Christmas/holidays: Rather than having a Christmas party, it is now
called a holiday party. This is done in order to recognize people
celebrating other holidays, which do not include Christmas. When you
have a party around the holidays, perhaps you should ask your staff
whether or not a “Santa” or tree is acceptable.
Including religion: Never do group activities that use religion. This is a
topic that can easily be taken the wrong way. Instead base your games
and activities on neutral points. The same goes for the discussion of
politics, this is best done off of work hours.
Politically correct team building ideas really are easy to find. As most
team building activities are not meant to be intrusive about private
details. These activities are also made to create an oneness with the
group, rather than divide. A good way to insure that the activities and
games you are providing for your staff or co workers are politically
correct is to not touch on any subject that may be “iffy”. If something
has the potential to cause discord or distrust, do not use it in your
practices.
A team building activity is great ways to help your team better know
one another, but should not be used to prove a point or exercise a
belief.
