Team building has been created for many reasons; one of the big ones
is conflict resolution. In the office atmosphere there are many
personalities and cultures combining, making it had to please everyone.
When there is conflict in the workplace it can be impossible to get work
done, and even harder to keep a positive outlook. The main purpose of
team building is to teach people how to handle conflict and resolve it in
a way that is positive and helpful. Many studies have shown that once
employees know how to handle and resolve conflict, the office is a
more upbeat place to be.
This does not mean that everyone will get along 100% of the time. This
means that when there is an issue the staff knows how to properly deal
with it. There are some great activities to help staff resolve conflict
better, and open up to one an other more freely. Listed below are some
great team building exercises for conflict resolution.

This activity will help each person in the group get to know one
another. It will create bonds and help some people realize, each person
is different and unique.
The Perfect Team Member
Size of Group: Divide into groups of 5 – 6
Materials: Flip chart and markers
Time: 15 – 20 minutes
Give each group a piece of flip chart paper and markers and ask them
to draw the perfect advisory team member and label their
characteristics. For example, they might have big ears to listen and hear
the needs of the community. After each group is finished, have them
post their “person” on the wall and describe them.
This activity can help resolve conflict because it is allowing every person
in the room to see nobody is perfect. And therefor we all need to try
harder to work with the people on our team.
Commonalities
Size of Group: Divide into groups of 4 – 5
Materials: none
Time: 15 minutes
Divide into groups of 4 – 5 and ask them to exchange names within the
group. In the group, generate a list of things that are common to all
members of the group, but not identifiable by just looking at each other
(i.e. speaking a foreign language, drinking the same type of soda,
etc.).Give them 5 minutes to make a list of 3 items. (Another option is

to make it a contest and see which group can generate the most ideas.
Pull the groups together and ask for some examples.
This is a great way to show the group that there are some common
bonds. They could be as simple as liking coke or Pepsi, but if you look
hard enough you can find some of yourself in another. Knowing where
people are coming from is a big deal, when it comes to understanding.
