3. Sketching is a roughdrawingrepresentingthe major featuresof an
object or scene .For the first project of my English class, I am asked to
produceasketch for a kitchen utensil. As a futurearchitect, this project
allow me in obtaining the sketching skill which is really importantfor my
futurejob. Besidesthat, this project guideme a lot to pick up some skills of
drawingsuch as highlights, shading and shadows which I have yet to learn in
any of my majorcourses before .These skills that I acquired will soon become
an very useful tools in Introduction to drawing (ITD) course and my degree
courses .The following describe how I choose my kitchen utensil and my
sketching process.
Before I can start to sketch, I have to select my material. I came to the
kitchen and start searching, but I had no idea which to choose. At First, I
planned to choose the blender, as it is the kitchen utensil that I really use a lot,
but soon I gave up because it was simply complicated to sketch it out. When I
was wondering which material to choose, suddenly I heard a “pap” sound
came out from the kitchen. I rushed toward the kitchen to see what was
happening. I was shocked to see my mummy was killing a cockroach with a
cooking pan! This interesting occasion made me decided to choose the
cooking pan as my sketching material. Besides of killing cockroach, cooking
pan allow me to cook most of my favourite dishes such as fry chicken and
honey pancakes .As I am staying alone, cooking pan is the only kitchen utensil
which allow me to cook some light foods when I don’t wish to take my dinner
outside. My cooking pan is made of stainless steel and its silvery grey, you can
even see your own face clearly on its shiny surface. Its holderis made of
plastic to prevent the user from being hurt by the heat .It will produce a loud
and attracting sound when it is hit by a metal spoon ,I often do that when I
was small and I will start to imagine as if I am a drum player who are playing a
rock sound.
To come out with a good sketch, suitable tools are very important. Few
types of pencils is needed for the drawing to come out with different effect. F
pencil which is the “fine” pencil has the thinnest and hardest lead is just right
for the starting line. Besides of F pencil, B pencil which mean “blackness”
pencil really helpful in the drawing too.Follow by the B and 2B pencil which
can produce the shape of the cooking pan.3B and 4B pencil is needed too for
the highlight work and the shading process .Instead of free-hand drawing,
using a ruler and a triangle set can assist me to produce fine and systematic
work rather then rough drawing created by my hands. To achieve the effect of
4. shadow, charcoal pencils is the best tool ever to shade out the lighting effect
and the shadow formed of the cooking pan. Last but not least, A4 papers is the
most important medium for me to express my creative thinking and ideas.A4
papers is in regular size and can be easily handle, hence I decided to choose
A4 papers as my drawing medium then other papers. To prevent any
disturbance I prefer to lock myself in a quiet room, switch off my phone and
clear my desk to begin my sketch with peace of mind.
Sketching is not an easy work for me, I was crying and screaming for help
like I was in a haunted house when I began my work. I started my sketch with
a circle as the starting line of my drawing. The next step is to draw out the
plastic holder of the pan with slightly darker 2B pencil and the ruler .After
that, highlight the side lines of the holderwith 4B pencil to make it sharp and
neat. And then, I carefully drew out the body of the cooking pan by forming
the second layer of line around the starting line that I had sketched out just
now. Now, a double layer circles and a plastic holder is done and it is the time
to form the bottom part the cooking pan. The bottom part of the cooking pan
is in “U” shape and it is really a challenging part. I had redo this part for a few
times but it just could not match with the body of the pan. After hours of
trying, I finally succeed in completing the sketch .The last part to do is to
shade out a shadow below the pan with my 4B pencil to make it look better.
The drawing took me about 3 hours as this is the first time for me to convert
a real thing into a sketch on a paper. I am really satisfied with my work
although it is a hard process but I enjoy going thought it. I will probably do it
again as I found it is a rather challenging work which also help me to focus on
my work.
