Some critics may have you believe that computer game studies lack theoretical rigor, that games cannot afford meaningful experiences. I agree with them, sometimes, but I also believe that a richer understanding of computer games is possible, and that this understanding can shed some light on related issues in the wider field of Digital Humanities. My main area of research has been designing and evaluating how contextually appropriate interaction can aid the understanding of cultures distant in time, space, and in understanding to our own. This field is sometimes called Virtual Heritage. In Virtual Heritage, tools of choice are typically virtual reality environments, and the projects are very large in scale, complexity, and cost, while my projects are often prototypes and experimental designs. I have many challenges, for example, morphing technological constraints into cultural affordances, and avoiding possible confusion between artistic artifice and historical accuracy, all the while evaluating intangible concepts in a systematic way without disturbing the participants’ sense of immersion. To help me judge the success or failure of these projects I have shaped some working definitions of games, culture, cultural understanding, cultural inhabitation, and place. However, these concepts and definitions are not enough. I also have to now tackle the issues of simulated violence, artificial “other” people, the temptation of entertainment masquerading as education, and the difficulties inherent in virtually evoking a sense of ritual. My lecture, then, is a discussion into how game-based learning, and the study of culture, heritage and history, might meaningfully intersect.

Luigina Ciolfi, Danilo Giglitto and Eleanor Lockley, Sheffield Hallam University, and Abir Tobji and Katy Ashton, People’s History Museum CultureLabs is an international project focusing on the role of culture and heritage in facilitating social inclusion. Wider and deeper community engagement in the heritage sector has been aided by digital technologies to engage communities who may feel disconnected from heritage institutions, such as migrants and refugees. CultureLabs’ universities, heritage institutions, SMEs, and NGOs are developing a digital platform for facilitating participatory cultural projects with communities of migrants or refugees, and for sharing best practices. Through pilots in three countries, the CultureLabs approach and technology will be developed and evaluated. The UK pilot is led by the People’s History Museum. As the UK approaches Brexit, PHM will engage communities in Greater Manchester to reflect on the theme of migration: they will meet, discuss, and explore what they have ‘More in Common’ and what it means to live in multicultural Britain. These events will lead to the co-production of an exhibition that reflects on the museum collection and the recently acquired Jo Cox memorial wall. In the presentation, we will discuss how CultureLabs’ technology and pilots will create bridges between cultural institutions, migrants’ communities, and support communities to facilitate the design, execution and sharing of participatory projects for social inclusion.

We want to talk and discuss about our nightly urban environment, about the way we create and perceive the nocturnal image of our cities, about the lighting of our streets. The availability of new technologies for lighting does not seem to be altering significantly the methodology applied for this purpose, our concepts about, for example, “quality” of lighting, ergonomy, eficiency, safety… All of these terms should be strongly revised, in our opinion, and the need to renew the obsolete intalations due to energy eficiency requirements is a good opportunity to do so. We choose experimentation as a tool to develop our proposals, focused in the lighting design of public places, of spaces where there is a chance for social interchange, between people and between people and their environment, their lightscape. We want to arrange conditions for things to happen, for changes to come in this perception/communication of/with space. We believe in education as a form of producing and distributing culture for a social change, a form of activism and community building. During one of our workshops, many topics appear that we like to apply in practice: DIY, autonomy, the nightscape of our urban environment as part of a visual indentity and heritage, the special care that historic sites, public places and old city centres require in terms of a lighting project… and there is always a concept that flows through everything we do and debate: enablement of citizenship, as a way to favour the commitment of the community in the evolution and planning of their landscape, their habitat. And to develop a personal criteria towards the policies of urban planning, in general.

Making cultural content available for everyone via mass digitisation is still a challenge for the European ALM (Archives, libraries and museums) sector. Most European memory institutions intend to digitise their whole collection and develop projects for the attractive presentation of their online available electronic content. The creative industry expects content that is ready for remix and reuse even for business purposes. Based on the experiences of the meetings of Member States Expert Group on Digitisation and Digital Preservation the lecture will summarize the main factors that challenge the realization of this aim and outline possible solutions. I will present the business needs (what creative reuse means), the legal barriers (how existing copyright rules make creative reuse difficult), the memory institutions’ perspective and some landmark projects from all over Europe that makes it clear that there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Due to their massive character, MOOCs are frequently based on transmissive methodologies. This simple strategy is based on content transmission, that has direct effects on the learning quality. Gamification is an opportunity to improve learning strategies and results. The analysis is organised on three focuses (the EA approach): the learners, the teachers, and the means. For each component, seven strategies are suggested. At least, as a summarise, one principle is associated to each focus: autonomy for learners, unpredictability for teachers, and flexibility for means.
