Tiah: So what can we ascertain from this information? How does it relate to how our community of tourists fits into the global community. There are several limiting factors that hinder our group…
Tiah: We conducted a small survey among our peers, families and friends and got some chilling results. Almost 95% of the people surveyed consider their finances before considering a trip. In 1955, a social geographer, Ian Matley stated that the more willing people were to spend larger sums of money, the more comfortable their vacations would be. How many of us have sat side to side in the coach part of an airplane to save a few dollars? But given the current economic climate, saving a few dollars is exactly what tourists are forced to do in order to be able to take a vacation at all.
Tiah: Our informal survey when compared to the United nations world tourism Barometer published yearly, shows that the majority of our participants stayed within the continental US. They were domestic tourists. This goes hand in hand with the declining World tourism numbers that UNWTO reported for 2008. So how are the thrifty tourists making do in a down-turned economy? For one, they are not using the travel agent nearly as often. In fact, 93.8% of our participants booked their entire trip online. Only 6.3% used a travel agent for part of their planning. Long gone are the days when tourists can afford the fees that the travel agent charges for their services.
