The agricultural diet of the Cahokians consisted mainly of corn, squash, and sunflowers, which lacked important nutrients. Corn provided calories but lacked vitamins and protein. While crops were easy to harvest, the diet lacked nutrition needed for a healthy lifestyle. Some advantages were that the crops filled people up without much food and grew quickly to feed many. However, meat was also important for protein, vitamins and minerals, and the agricultural diet did not include enough meat for good health.
2. Disadvantages of the Agriculture Diet. The Cahokia diet, consisted of mainly of corn, squash, pumpkins and sunflowers, these very plain foods did not support the dietary needs of the hunter gathers. They did not have the nutrition they needed for their day to day lives. The Cahokians also grew: May grass, lamsquarter, marsh elder and little barley. *WHICH WERE NOT HIGH IN ANY NUTRITIONAL VALUE.
3. Disadvantages of the Agriculture diet continued… Corn is one of the many staples in the Agricultural diet of the Cahokians. This corn was of great importance to the middle or low class Cahokians, because of its availibility and its quick and easy harvest. Little did they know that this corn lacked nutritional value. Corn has a lot of starch, which if consumed at a consistent rate is bad for you. It also lacks some of the vitamins that your body needs, with the acceptation of vitamin A.
4. Advantages of the Agricultural Diet. Although there are more reasons NOT to adopt this diet, there are still a few advantages in this Agricultural diet . Some of which are: *The quick and easy process of harvesting corn, squash, and sunflower. *The “starch fill” which makes you feel full without really eating a lot of the food, and holds you off for a few hours, also known as consuming a lot of carbohydrates. *These foods, are easily plant–able and can grow fast and in masses, which helps feed many people.
