10. How can a multi-step equation be used in a real-
world situation?
A multi-step equation can be used when
constructing a fence around a rectangular garden.
The variables will first have to be defined and then
set up the equation. Next, “combine like terms”
and then “add or subtract the constants.” Once the
variable is solved, a gardener will know how much
fence needs to be placed around the perimeter of
the garden.

11. How are some insects able to walk on a pond’s
surface?
An insect may be able to walk on a pond’s surface
due to cohesion. “The strong attraction between
water molecules produces a force sometimes
called ‘surface tension,’ which can support very
light objects.” Because of its multiple legs, an
insect’s mass is distributed over a large area on
the surface of the water, which means that the pull
of gravity is limited at any one location on the
surface.

12. How are natural resources related to a country’s
economy?
Gold and silver are some of the natural resources
that may help a country’s economy. “Available
natural resources may form the basis of a
country’s economy, either by their being
processed or sold.” After gold and silver are sold
or process, the country will have a profit.

13. According to “The Scarlet Ibis,” what is the
significance of the ibis? Explain your answer and
support it with evidence from the selection.
The ibis is significant in that it symbolizes Doodle.
The description of the bird as “uncoordinated, and
amid much flapping and a spray of feathers, it tumbled
down” mirrors Doodle’s attempts to walk. Also, when
the ibis dies, it symbolizes Doodle’s own fate; this is
confirmed when the narrator realizes that the “red
before [him] looked familiar,” connecting Doodle’s
bloody body to the red ibis.

14. After reading “Postcard: New Delhi,” do you think Gupta’s modified airplane is a
good idea?
In Robinson’s article “Post Card: New Delhi,” Gupta’s modified airplane is
presented as a chance for those who aren’t able to afford to bard an actual
aircraft to still become knowledgeable about not only the mannerisms of a
passenger but also become inspired by the experience of being in an airplane,
thus making this a good idea. Gupta worked for Indian Airline, and now uses the
modified plane “to train…students and flight attendant.” He explains that people
from his village “begged him for tours” when he worked for the airline company,
but the security wouldn’t allow it. Thus, he got the idea to use the modified aircraft
as a way for the poor and students to also get a feel for flying, saying that he
hopes “to inspire them so that [they] see that if they study hard, they might
become a pilot.” Gupta’s idea offer an inspiring experience to those who wouldn’t
usually be able to gain it by making the price for visiting the plane free. He allows
them to get a feel for luxury that will hopefully motivate them to work hard and
reach their dreams because that was the purpose of his modified plane, making
his idea a both good and inspirational one.
