The History Game: Taking the classroom outdoors with mobile devices The main aim of the session is to stimulate participants to think about how to use the outdoor space more creatively for language activities. In this session I will show the case study of how 6th graders could explore the history of their local area by turning it into a game. After finding out some significant events, the students make a simple game to guide players from one place in the historical story to another by the use of short texts, images, audio or video. These are then uploaded to a free tool which players access when they want to play the game. This activity could be extended to all sorts of different themes such as a sight-seeing tour or a detective mystery game. The activity is not restricted to the use of one tool; there are several free tools available which can do a similar job.

Since Language Learning Strategies (LLSs) have potential to be, “an extremely powerful learning tool” (O’Malley, Chamot, Stewner-Manzanares, Russo & Kupper, 1985a, p.43), the use of LLSs helps the learners retrieve and store material, and facilitate their learning (Grander & Maclntyre, 1992),they are sensitive to the learning context and to the learner’s internal processing preferences, also they are extremely important part of second/foreign language teaching and learning, and there is relationship between the frequent use of LLSs and achievement in the language (Bremner, 1999; Green & Oxford, 1995; Oxford & Burry-Stock, 1995);there is need to understand what are LLSs, in what manner it is possible to teach them to learners, how learners choice and use them, and which variables affect the choice and use of them. A review of the relevant literature shows that there are various variables affect the choice and use of LLSs. Personality traits as one the most predictors, significantly influence success in learning a second language (Gass & Selinker, 1994). In the current study, the investigator aims to explore the nature of LLSs and their relationship to different variables.

Furthermore, It will detail the relevant theories of online learning and show how they are represented through various models, creating a framework to assist the e-moderation process.

Our learners increasingly expect to be able to use their mobile devices in their language learning, and not just for downloading apps. In this talk I describe a mobile device based action research project that I carried out with two groups of international adult EFL learners (a beginners group, and a lower intermediate group) in the UK. The action research project aimed to identify some of the choices and challenges involved in a BYOD (bring your own device) approach in the classroom. Data included entrance and exit surveys, as well as student interviews, and the digital artifacts created by the students themselves during the project with their devices. From the experience, I developed a framework consisting of six parameters that need to be taken into account for effective, communicative, language production tasks that can be supported by mobile devices. The talk describes some of the activities carried out with the learners, the rationale for these, and presents the six parameters for effective mobile task design for the EFL classroom. It also describes some of the challenges faced, and suggests how these might best be approached.
