By MAX! DUNCAN! JAMIE! AMBER! The Vietnam War
Why is the Vietnam War viewed as bad? How were soldiers treated during and after the war and were they treated fairly? These are our two topic questions we are going to be discussing. Introduction
It was started by the Communist guerrillas (the so-called Vietcong) in the South, who were backed by Communist North Vietnam, in an attempt to overthrow the South Vietnam government. The War Starts in 1959 The Viet Cong flag
Why is the Vietnam war viewed as a bad war?
People watched the horrors of the war on their TV’s from their homes. People Against The War The majority of Americans distanced themselves from the war. American people didn’t want anything to do with the Vietnam War.
The war started in the beginning of the 20th century . Due to a nationalist known by the name of Ho Chin Minh. Ho Chi Minh wanted the U.S. to help them run the country, which at the time was under French rule. The US agreed to help them after they helped fight against Japan in WWII. The only problem was the US didn’t keep their word…. WHY DID THE WAR START
There were two sides in the Vietnam War: North Vietnam the communists South Vietnam the non-communists North Vietnam was supported by China and Russia because they were both controlled by communist parties. South Vietnam was supported by the United States, France, and the Allies because they were non-communist. Other countries like Australia, South Korea, New Zealand, the Philippines also got involved in the war. But they took a smaller role in the war than the main countries. Who Fought The War
How were soldiers treated after the war? And were they treated fairly?
Media On Rampage Against Soldiers American soldiers were called Baby killers because people thought they were killing innocent civilians and babies without mercy. For the most part people who called soldiers baby killers during the Vietnam War were hippies and war demonstrators. These people were crude, selfish and frightened that they or someone they knew would have to go to Vietnam and fight the war. In reality most soldiers tried to avoid civilian casualties and took exceptional care when fighting around them. They did their best to not injure them or kill them.
Duncan and Max believe the war was a “success”. They believe that it kept the population from rising to high. They feel strongly about the baby boom afterwards. They feel the war helped develop new battle tactics. “Violence solves everything.” says Duncan and Max. ½ Group Point Of View
Amber and Jamie believe the war was toilsome. It took innocent lives and soldiers were not treated fairly when they returned to America. Vietnam veterans still suffer greatly from emotional pain. “It is greatly a misunderstood war.” says Amber. Other ½ Group Point of View
During the Vietnam War more than 2.5 million people died and millions more were displaced. Twice as much bombs were dropped than during the World War II The communist forces of North Vietnam won the war due to the surrender of General Duong Vanh Minh and his office in the Presidential palace in Saigon. Conclusion & Effects on society today
